Have you even noticed how the first cut on the debut album of really great bands is almost always memorable? It's as if they've been saving the material all their lives for this first opportunity to impress the world and the first cut explodes out of the blocks with great energy. Almost always memorable, even if it doesn't go down in the annals as a "hit". What are your favorite example of this phenomenon? Example: Doors- "Break on Through" |

Come on, more examples. If we can get 30 or 40 of them, it would make a great mix. |

C'mon Everybody from NRBQ's debut. When Terry hits those clavinet chords and Steve Ferguson starts his chicken pickin on guitar, it sounded like Carl Perkins had just blasted off to outer space. XTC-Radio's in Motion- Their debut's nowhere near my favorite but you knew these guys were out to dismantle pop music with this first song.

In my view, the only song that can rival the Beatles in terms of first album cuts is Purple Haze by Hendrix on the US version of the album. In the UK, Jimi's first song was Hey Joe which had been covered by many groups until he sort of took it over. I have a version by The Leaves which is very interesting. But PH is right up there in terms of first cuts. Next up is Good Times Bad Times from Zep's first album. It set the tone for everything else they did for the next 10 years. And I'd strongly recommend tracking down a copy of the Yardbirds doing Dazed and Confused live in 1968- with Keith Relf on vocals. It's amazing to hear how the song was transformed by Plant and Page just a few months later. And equally amazing is how Page totally ripped off the playing guitar with a bow from a guy named Eddie Phillips. How about More Than a Feeling by Boston on their debut album? That album was just a monster in '76. I clearly remember being in school and having some kids say that they'd be bigger than the Beatles. Well for about 6 weeks they were half as big.

You know, with Van Morrison, I always think of his work with THEM first. I mean if you want to talk about explosive out of the box stuff, just listen their first album. That was one amazing little band. |

What do you want, I'm a child of the 80s. And for the record, I have every one of these tracks on my iPod. And if you look hard enough there is a 60's and 70's band in there somewhere or other. Just so you know, XTC is still making great music. The Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun The English Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom (Tears of a Clown cover was their earlier single also a classic) The Cure - 10:15 Saturday Night (or Killing an Arab was their earlier single) The Smiths - Reel Around The Fountain (Hand in Glove was their earlier single) Bauhaus - Bela Legosi's Dead Love and Rockets - Ball of Confusion (cover) Roxy Music - Virginia Plain (first single) Brian Eno - Needles In The Camel's Eye The Blue Nile - A Walk Across the Rooftops Velvet Underground - All Tomorrow's Parties" / "I'll Be Your Mirror (single) The Clash - Janie Jones Big Audio Dynamite - Medicine Show R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe Sex Pistols - Holidays in the Sun Depeche Mode - New Life Duran Duran - Girls on Film (still to this day one of TS' favorites) Gang of Four - Ether Joy Division - Disorder New Order - Dreams Never End The Police - Next to You The Pretenders - Precious The Psychadelic Furs - India The B-52s - Planet Claire The Specials - A Message to You Rudy |

I love the first four songs from the New Order album to which Alleygater is referring, although my favorite is Chosen Time - the fourth track. The album is Movement - and I think the first one released after Joy Division regrouped as New Order. But as far as their later albums - Regret and Crystal were by far the strongest songs from Republic and Get Ready, and I think were the first tracks for both albums. About ten years ago or so, I requested an early New Order song from a dj in NYC, and he told me that at least I managed to choose a non-cheesy song from one of the cheesiest bands in the world. But since I am a big NO fan (and also a child of the 80s), I guess I love my cheese!

Sbenois, I like you're choice of Good Times Bad Times from Led Zeppelin I. I couldn't quite tell from your post whether you knew that it was also Page in the Yardbirds doing Dazed & Confused live w/ Relf. It was always Page's song; when he performed it w/ the Yardbirds, they called it I'm Confused. Anyway, you're right, the song is completely tranformed by the time he and Plant get through w/ it. Always thought Page's guitar bowing was semi-original. Who's this Eddie Phillips fellow?
