The bulk pickup will happen between the dates of June 5 and June 21. There will be a brochure in the mail this week so that you can see when your neighborhood pickup will be.

There will only be one pick up this year. The second pick up was eliminated as a cost cutting measure.

My taxes went up a lot - I cannot accept just one pick up - can we periodically arrange individual pick ups and bill back the town?

Ed,

The charge for one bulk pickup is currently in the monthly (billed Quarterly) rate that you pay directly to Waste Management of NJ.

The 2nd pickup was paid from your taxes by the Township. As part of the effort to reduce the amount of the tax increase this year, that payment for the 2nd pickup was dropped.

While that nickel or dime by its self does not seem like much, it was added to a lot of other nickels and dimes to keep our tax increase for the Town budget below 10%.

No matter how it was done, you paid for both, and now you only pay for one.

You can always haul some of that bulk trash you have to the center on Boyden, or take it directly to the receiving center for Waste Management of NJ.

Where are you getting all that bulk trash from anyway? We hardly ever have anything to put out.

Have a good MAY,
George

I did not know that we paid for one of the bulk pick-ups in or WM quarterly bill. Does anyone know what percentage ($$$) this is ... Curious. I mean if we're talking another $50 per year, I'd ante up for the thrill of two bulk nights per year.

You can ante up $50 (or so) at your convenience and have Waste Management come and haul away a pretty good pile of junk ... including construction debris which is not allowed in the normal bulk pickups. We did this recently after some do-it-yourself construction in our home and the tab was $45. When you have your junk accumulated, just give them a call. They will come by, give you a price and arrange a date (within a few days). Then you just put it out on the curb on the appointed day and leave a check for them. It's very easy.

While I will miss the extra bulk pickup, I have to agree that all of us have been after the TC to look for budget cuts and ways to limit the tax increase. Here is one way they have done that.

The zones listed above are different than the recycling zones.

I cannot list all the streets but will give you a rough calculation of where it will start next week. A leaflet is being prepared by Waste Management for distribution by them.

June 5th - Zone 9 is bounded by the railroad tracks on the west and Valley Street on the East. It includes the Golf Island neighborhood and the homes along Dunnell Road

June 6th - Zone 8 runs from Valley on the west to Propsect on the east and from Tuscan Road on the south to the South Orange border on the north. It includes the Crescents, the streets around Town Hall and the Kensington neighborhood area.

June 7th - Zone 6 is the area north of Parker Ave. and east of Prospect Street. It includes the area around Clinton School and the Hillcrest neighborhood.

June 8th - Zone 11 is a little more complicated. It includes Rosevelt, Hickory, Curtiss, Ridgewood Terrace, Clinton, Mountain (above Ridgewood) Maple and Berkeley and all the roads above Wyoming

Eb1154,

I stand corrected. Thanx!

If you want to haul the bulk trash youself, you need to take it to the Waste Management transfer station on Chancellor.

According to Jamie's post the first pick-up is next Wed, which means people will need to prepare on Tuesday. It is now Thursday and I have seen nothing in the mail from Waste Mgmt. Is anybody on top of this situation?

I think some people will be quite angry if they don't get notified on time.

Mayor Deluca and/or Mr. Ryan:

According to Waste Management, who I just called, the flyer is being prepared by Maplewood, not them. Not sure if this was just wrong info, or a disconnect between WM and Town Hall, but it should be looked into, since the mayor said the flyer was being prepared by and sent by WM. The 5th is only 3 mail days away and people have no way of knowing when their date is, as well as what is and is not permissible to put out for bulk pickup.

The hallmark of our current Town Council is prompt, accurate and effective communications.

If the Mayor tells you WM is mailing it, it will happen. Do not question the statement. Do not test it. Our Town Council will take care of you and me as they see fit.

You can take that one to the bank!

Call DPW - 973/762-1175 and give them your street and they'll give you the date. They were very nice about it.

I just think it's a bad time to squeeze in the one pickup - i.e. we'll be on vacation when our date happens...and I'm sure other people may find this problem also.

Sigh! c'est la vie en Maplewood
