Just curious- -While I'm sure that the contractors for the new wall are required to clean up the piles of dirt, stones etc, and presumably plant new grass, suppose the clean up is not to the town's satisfaction? -Also, there are "doughnut" tracks all over "dog hill" clearly made by the trucks that drive over/through the park daily. Should they be required to plant new seed over the bare spot on the hill presumably made by the dogs, but now made worse because of the doughnut tracks? -THe trucks have worn a terrible looking track as well from going in and out of the park every day. In fact, it's right in front of where the outdoor concerts are held. The "doggie bare spot" pales in comparison to the havoc wreaked by the workmen. It would be nice to know that they are required to fix this area as well when the work is complete. -Also, can someone from town hall ask the contractors to Throw Away their Garbage? There is even a dumpster at the library at the moment that they could pitch their enormous bag of takeout into. I walk by this filth every day - it is foul. Probably foul fowl too! Thank you. |

Okay, on my early morning walk today, there were actually some workers down by the river - eating bagels, drinking coffee. I went up to them and politely inquired about the garbage and suggested that they could use the dumpster by the library. One of the guys looked at me and shrugged. I suggested again that the garbage was all over the place and couldn't they please throw it out instead of leaving it all over the ground. Another shrug. And then he said, "I'm not the boss." |

Here's a mess update in light of the summer concert series starting soon. Be prepared and watch your kids closely because...there are: -wooden blocks strewn about with nails sticking up -broken up orange fencing material - definitely not worthy of keeping anything (one) out. Mostly good for tripping over. -enormous patches and piles of dirt and stone -ridiculous amounts of styrofoam takeout packaging usually with chinese food leftovers (eccchhh! the smell) -paper bags with old sandwiches (I know this not because I was hungry, but because my dog has no manners!) -chunks of cement -and other random construction site debris. Jamie - do you have something to do with these concerts? You will not be happy when you get down there and see. I hope something is done before they start, because it is a huge accident waiting to happen once families arrive with all the toddlers and kids running around. If I knew how to post digital pictures, I would. |

Ffof, Jim Buchanan does the summer music series which occurs on Sunday nights. I do a couple "Underground Concert Series" shows out there, I only have one booked so far this summer and will announce it soon. I was very unhappy with the state of the field awhile back, which is what this thread was about: /discus/messages/129/7400.html?1019901745 Dean Weiss Landscape even offered to plant seed on the large dirt patch for free. The town said that this wouldn't work until the dogs were off the hill. I'll have to reinspect the area, perhaps I'll get some photos to post. This sounds unacceptable and hopefully some of it will be cleaned up by the Fourth, I'll be assembling my percussion sculpture in that genral area. |

Here are a few pics I just took of the construction going on in the park. http://www.maplewoodonline.com/pics/construction.php It's too bad they had to drive over the field, at least all of the grass should be replanted. Does anyone know when the wall refinishing will be over? Was there any time estimates on the contruction? Looks like I'll have to adjust my location a little on the Fourth. |

I believe the Mayor posted that the work was to be completed by the end of May, although given the number of "senior moments" I have had recently I may be mistaken on this. |

thanks for the pics, Jamie. Also, when you go up close and personal there are also the huge amounts of garbage that I mentioned as well as many many blocks of wood with nails that protrude upwards. Perhaps it is close to being finished on the "dog hill" side, but the other side still has to be done. Well, actually, i don't know for sure if they are planning on doing the other side, but it would seem so. |

I understand that the Kids Kamp will also be using this area, since they can't use the Civic House (asbestos cleanup) and are staying closer to the library. Will the hill be cleaned in time for the kids going to camp on Monday? |

I would be surprised if it were all cleaned up. You should go down and check it out. Or find out how the kids are going to be contained to certain areas so that they don't wander into the construction area. |

Good question. That's also one of the issues concerning similar use of DeHart Park on Burnet where the YMCA has its older kids daycamp going all summer. Bacata |

I just got back from the park and things seem to be improving. Most of the debris between the bridge and Oakview has been cleared, except where the construction equiptment is parked near the street. Grass is growing in along most of the bank. It looks like the old cherry tree so near and dear to Naturegirl has been saved, at least temporarily. The prefabs are in, the tree is still there (maybe minus a few limbs), although a lot of the leaves seem to be dead. About five dogs were getting in their last runs at Dog Hill, while their owners sat around on the "grass" talking. There is a new supply of prefabs being stored on the east side of the river. I thought the TC had only sprung for repairing one side of the area. Are they going to do the east side also?

The old cherry tree is near dead from shock -- the other trees in the area have largely been clear-cut, except for the one dead tree which they kindly left alone. Once the other side of the waterway gets underway, those trees will be similarly treated to the tender mercies of the construction crews. I'm hoping that the TC will follow-through with their promise to replace the lost trees with trees of like size and kind. This project continues to be poorly managed (e.g., debris, trash, nails, damage to trees, grass, earth). Once again, this is an opportune time to establish an aesthetics committee. Anyone interested? |

I saw the wall between the duck pond and the former dog hill today. Why did they tint the same "rock" brown on all of them? Why didn't they use any gray tones? Why weren't they shifted so the pattern varied from piece to piece? I was under the impression they were going to try and make them look more natural. Unfortunately, it didn't work. |

RATS! Last night my husband and I took a stroll around Memorial Park at 7pm and were stunned to see no fewer than 5 rats hopping around the construction area and duck pond. One rat came to within 6 feet of an oblivious artist who set up her easel at one end of the pond, another was nibbling chips on a picnic blanket a family threw down on the play field just the other side of the pond. I don't know if the rats normally live in the riverbank and were displaced by the construction, or if they were attracted to the location by the garbage. Either way, they were very bold and completely unafraid of people. My husband called the city today to tell them about the rat insurrection. It wasn't clear what action they would take. Does anyone know a Pied Piper? |

Chanteusie, Welcome to MOL. Where have you been since 3-2002? I will be happy to give you some information on RATS! Ask for a book I'll leave for you at "Late for the train Cafe and Juice Bar" at the Maplewood train station. "COVERED CANS KILL RATS!" WHERE DO RATS LIVE- Rats live under, or in and around garbage cans. Also, under trash, rubbish, in high grass and weeds; in unused vehicles, and under ground near water. WHAT CAN BE DONE- Drain and wrap all garbage, keep garbage cans tightly covered, store cans 18" above ground, keep your property, trees, lawn, and sidewalks litter free at all times, keep grass and weeds cut, remove trash and unused cars from your property, form neighborhood association to get information to everyone, and keep pet and bird food and waste cleaned up. RAT FACTS- Rats contaminate food and destroy property, carry diseases, grow teeth at about 5" a year, can chew through doors and lead pipes, and one pair of rats can produce about 1,500 more rats in one year!!! I hope this is helpful. Art Christensen |
