The high piles of loose dirt from the construction by the river plus the garbage that the construction workers and others leave near the site plus the water in the river itself equal prime habitat for rats. The longer the construction takes, the more of a health risk this condition will pose. Someone should alert Mr. Rowe to this. The river can't be removed and the dirt piles are needed for the present but something can be done about reducing the amount of garbage on site and storing what remains in rodent proof containers. Remove the food source and the rats may go elsewhere. If all else fails, we could consider turning that part of the park into a temporary cat run. |

Joancrystal, I'm sure there are enough cats in town to clean the park up, but how many have a license? |

I have also seen rats on my property (my neighbors also). We have been in touch with Bob Rowe, and he has been helpful (basically, we're poisoning them per his suggestion). This may not be widespread, and I'm not suggesting a bigger problem exists. But I DO suggest calling him if you have a problem; he should know if it IS widespread, and more action could be taken I suppose. |

Ed, Rats are really nothing to joke about. Every town has rats, and unless our township committee stays on top of the issue, Maplewood could wind up having a very serious rat problem. Because of this thread, I'm now curious about what is presently being done to control the problem along the brook at Memorial Park where the construction is still ongoing. This is where rats live. After the numerous sightings there, and in different parts of town recently, the question is whether we have a problem or not. Who can tell us? The best way to hear about rats is from the TC, and/or the residents in each part of our community. Here is the value in having a neighborhood association where there is a collective ear and voice. Each area identified would need to be handled differently. Where do we start? Well I guess the question now is, how many MOL posters have seen any rats recently? I mean anywhere in town, even from the day you first moved in. A lot can be done to correct the problem, however, please keep in mind that more than any other factor, the TC is primarily responsible for any rat problems that do exist in our town. First, how many residents know the difference between a rat and a mouse? Rats are NOT overgrown mice! For those that don’t know, the difference is like between a Cat and a Lion. Rats burrow under ground and must live close to water, mice don’t. Rats, unlike mice are aggressive, devour large amounts of food and drink lots of water every day. Mice are shy and timid, nibble at food, and can go for days living off only the moisture from a water pipe. Rats must keep gnawing to wear their teeth down, and will chew through most anything to get at food. Look for burrow holes and gnawing marks around your property. Mice on the other hand will inspect food for as long as a day before eating it. The differences between them are like day and night. There is a lot to be said on this topic and I recommend anyone with concerns about rodent problems first contact the town health officer, then call a state licensed exterminator. Good luck. Art Christensen

So, Art, will Rat Control be a campaign issue? Did you ever see that movie "Willard"? That will give you the bee jeezers for sure. "Ben, I found what I went looking for ..." Michael Jackson sang that classic, don't you know.

Didn't I just read the TC meeting was cancelled? Dave, I know you don't feel there are any campaign issues worth discussing until September, but now I'm really getting concerned!!! Our leaders are gone, half the candidates are gone, and most of the residents are gone. Hey guys, this issue is really nothing to joke about.,,,, Ed, get those signs up ASAP! Hello Chanteusie, Hello Ben, have there been anymore sightings? Dave, can you tell us how many registered voters are left in town? Is an evacuation necessary? I don't know about the rest of you, but I'll be looking over my shoulder. You know what they say? When all these cats are away, the ....

Ed, I'll private line you, but until Dave and the rest of the MOLERS want to get serious about the TC election, until the candidates can begin to air out the issues with the so called MOL elite, and until we can get the debate on-line again, I feel there is only so much we can do. We have been knocking on doors every day, attending teas, shaking hands, and just this morning alone, I’ve kissed 5 babies, two dogs, and a hamster. Y U K ! I feel there are some clear-cut differences between the two parties that voters should consider. Either of us can mail out tens of thousands of dollars worth of one-sided rhetoric about ourselves. We can put out hundreds of lawn signs, and make all kinds of promises. The proof of a true competitor is best found in the challenger, lets start to mix it up a little…..

Arturo: Uno pregunta, por favor ... How come your running mate, Mr. Gardner, never chimes in on any of this stuff? Curious. Also, in 50 words are less (I'll be counting!): What, in your opinion, are the top five "clear-cut differences between the two parties that voters should consider". Inquiring minds want to know ... |

Art I agree. There are clear differences between the local Republican Party and the local Democratic party. There are clear differences between you and your running mate, and the other candidates. Clear differences in philosphy, track record, and platforms. Both sides want the best for Maplewood. I truly believe that. But until the voters hear both sides, they cannot make an intelligent decision. In a small town like Maplewood, I believe both campaigns could be waged economically and still give every voter the chance to ask his or her questions, before each voter votes for the team they think will do best for the town. |
