Please note that the Township Committee will not be introducing the municipal budget on Tuesday night. There's still more work to do, and more discussion needed, before we'll be ready to do that. Our plan is to devote time on Tuesday night to budget discussions along with the regular business of the committee. Jerry Ryan |

Members of the Town Committee, I represent a group of 21 people who would like to be on the agenda for the next town meeting on 2/18/03. Our interest is the pending war in the Middle East. As a group we are not for or not against the war. As individuals we have our opinions. We would like about 90 minutes to present to the committee our position paper and the backup documentation to support our strong resolve that the Town Committee needs to work on the business of running our town, improving services, lowering taxes and solving our school system problems. We do not believe that the Committee has any business representing the citizens of this town on Federal matters. In addition to our basic position and reference documents we also will have individual speakers who will speak to their specific positions on this matter. You can post your acceptance in this thread. We will provide reading material the day before the presentation. Thank you.

Mwsilva, Last night I immediately raised my public objection to the TC and the proposal to which you are referring. I'm pleased to see that 21 people would like to speak at the next town meeting on 2/18/03. All individuals I suspect have opinions, however, taking 90 minutes to present them would never be enough time. You say the TC needs to work on the business of running our town, improving services, lowering taxes and solving our school system problems. The point is well made, and I hope most residents would agree that the TC has no right to represent all the citizens of this town on Federal matters. This is especially so in times of war. Therefore, I respectfully suggest that a prior meeting be arranged, and one common voice, and a signed petition be brought forward to raise these mutual concerns. Maybe these 21 people could each speak to 10 more people to bring over 200 to the meeting if they feel this strongly…. I certainly do!!! Thank you. Art

SADDAM: First of all we admire the development of the peace movement around the world in the last few years. We pray to God to empower all those working against war and for the cause of peace and security based on just peace for all. That is a quote from an interview by a British apologist for Saddam. Township Committee members: please don't indulge our local peaceniks with an antiwar resolution. Unless you know something that Colin Powell doesn't know, you have no right speaking on this national security matter. Don't waste any time on this grandstanding. The anti war folks have the traditional venues of the newspaper, leafletting, whatever. They do not have the right to pressure local government to speak for them. |

mck, whether you're pro-war, anti-war, or war-agnostic I would hope that your last sentence was just a momentary lapse of judgment. people have the right to put any kind of pressure they want on local government. It's an exercise of free speech, after all. You can certainly argue that the TC has no obligation to listen, however. |

ML1: I didn't mean right in the constitutional sense, of course. I meant, they're not entitled to the TC's time on a matter over which the TC has absolutely no jurisdiction. It's simply political/moral preening. Like, I'm not entitled to ask for the TC's time to spout my positions on 8th grade reading material. The TC should not indulge this. |

Township Committee Members: Please do not send to Washington D.C. any resolution about any matter that purports to speak for the Township of Maplewood. Groups of citizens wishing to send resolutions to Washington should by all means do so, but not on Maplewood's letterhead.

To the Members of the Township Committee, I represent a group of 36 people who would respectfully like to reserve a block of 400 minutes in the 2/18 meeting so we may discuss the following issues: 1) The Federal Budget 2) The State Budget 3) The Cost of College Education 4) The Relative Merits of Solar Heating 5) The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict 6) North Korea 7) The Stock Market, Is it time to Invest? You were all elected to solve the problems and conduct the business of Maplewood. I do hope that you reject Mwsilva's request as you should have rejected the request last evening. You are all clearly opening yourselves and those you represent to a level of silliness that goes well beyond anything even I can dream up. Town Hall is not the place to debate these issues. Nip it in the bud now. |

My comment is not a position on the possible war. Rather, I think the TC made a mistake last night and this is not a road they want to travel down. Can you fathom all the nonsense stuff the TC would be asked to hear and take a stance on? I for one would like Maplewood to send Hollywood California a resolution demanding that they stop creating trash for the TV. Out with reality TV and bring back Mork and Mindy! If I can get a group together, can I get time to have my case heard?

MWSilva: What does this proposed resolution have to do with the functional responsibility of the Township Committee? They were not elected to endorse or refute Federal government policy on behalf of the township. I agree with those who have suggested that it would be more appropriate and more expedient for your group to send your petition directly to the appropriate person in Washington under your own names. I further suggest that the taxpayers of Maplewood who pay the stipend received by the TC members, the salary of the township employees needed at the proposed hearing, the cost of utilities required to maintain the town hall while this meeting is in session, etc. have a right to DEMAND in this time of serious fiscal constraint that the time of the TC be devoted to resolving township issues prior to hearing presentations on non-township business. There are a lot of local problems which do come under the TC's jurisdiction that are more deserving of the time you would like to use in presenting your material. |

I for one am all for peace. In fact, I believe that we should all work to resolve any sense of personal conflict and disharmony. What we see out there is simply a reflection of what we harbor within oursleves. We should all be taking the time to do that work. As for the Town Committee. I would like to see a resolution opening the town hall daily for anyone who may want to come together and chant, pray, meditate or whatever to promote a sense of world peace and inner harmony. In this way, anyone who supports peace in the town of Maplewood has the option of coming together with fellow towns people to express their desire for peace. In the meantime, the town committee can stick to the work they were elected to do. |
