Ed, thanks for inviting us to ask questions. I have some questions for Ed May and Joel Ziegler:

If you get elected, for whom would you cast your vote in 2004 for Mayor of Maplewood?

If you get elected, what leads you to believe that the minority incoming freshman TC class (that's EM and Jay Z) can impose a TQM approach to local government. How can 1 or even 2 new faces out of a board of 5 assume that leadership position? Have you already gotten buyoff on this from the incumbent TC committee persons?

And finally, Ed, can you cite three references where you personally directed the implementation of a new TQM approach where it had not existed previously? Who were the clients? May we contact them?

I don't mean that Fort Wayne has TQM, so why don't we. And I don't mean you teach TQM theories and best practices to students. I mean, please cite your personal hands-on experience in implementing it.

Thank you in advance.

Aquaman

Aquaman

Ed, thanks for the questions.

"If you get elected, for whom would you cast your vote in 2004 for Mayor of Maplewood?"

This is a very astute question. If Kathy and Ken get elected, Fred Profeta will be Mayor. This, after all, is why Fred worked so hard and spent so much money to assure that Kathy and Ken got the Democratic Line in that nasty June Primary. Vic and Jerry, as incumbents, who served honestly and admirably, should have gotten the Democratic endorsement in the Democratic Primary. Instead, Fred got control over enough Democratic District Leaders to assure that Kathy and Ken got Vic and Jerry's rightful place on the ballot. While I disagreed with Vic and Jerry on a number of issues, I know that both Vic and Jerry, have put a lot of time into their roles on the Township Committee. Jerry and Vic are a class act and are serving out their terms with honor and diligence. Joel and I would not vote for Fred to be Mayor when we are seated in January. Ian Grodman is a nice guy and my neighbor on Oberlin Street, but he would not get my vote, because he is also tied to Profeta. So that leaves David Huemer who has treated me as a legitimate candidate, lent me books about municipal government, and answered my questions straight up. I might vote for David and Joel might also. I certainly do not think that either Joel or myself as newbees on the TC would or should be given the Mayorality, although there is a certain ring to "Mayor May of Maplewood"!

Aquaman also asked "If you get elected, what leads you to believe that the minority incoming freshman TC class (that's EM and Jay Z) can impose a TQM approach to local government. When elected, JZ and EM will not impose anything. We have not discussed TQM in government with David, Ian, or Fred, except maybe in passing. It would be up to Joel and I to explain our TQMaplewood Program to D, I, and F, and hope that we could sell it to them, at least on a trial basis. These guys are well educated and experienced, and probably know something about TQM already. Why would they not give a listen to a program that has saved other municipalities so much money while improving services? If D, I, or F care to comment on TQM in government, now is the time for them to post. And if they need to learn, how about coming to one of the lectures that Joel and I will do during October. FYI Joel and I are in front of the Post Office again Saturday starting at 9 AM. We invite Kathy and Ken to do likewise and give the voters a chance to ask all of us the same questions at the same time.

Aquaman, my friend, don't you go away uneasy:

You asked "And finally, Ed, can you cite three references where you personally directed the implementation of a new TQM approach where it had not existed previously? Who were the clients? Dearest Ed,

I wish you could enlighten me a little more on your thought process here.

Fred Profeta uses a democratic, legal process to change the equation of the local Democratic party. The voting majority of Democrats and Independents in town then determine in an election that they want K&K as their party representatives in the November election. Your take? You somehow believe that this turn of events is presumably so (heinous?, offensive?, untoward?, etc.) that you can't vote for Ian in January because he's "tied to Profeta"?

I would ask you to please reconsider your apparent disregard for, and discomfort with, the lawful election process that you otherwise seem to champion as a proud American. Please know that I am not asking you to reconsider how you would vote in January if you won a seat on the TC. I am merely trying to get you to think about what you've written here and determine whether your rationale is logical. Denying K&K the legitimacy of their slots seems to deny the will of the majority who voted for them. No?

Let's call a spade a spade Ed: Mr. Huemer's desire to help you with a question, a book, etc., is as much in his self interest as getting K&K a slot on the line was for Mr. Profeta. If there's a bloody primary battle next year, Mr. Huemer is going to need as many independents (and Democrats you've won over) as possible. Treating you well may win him votes. Frankly, Eduardo, I'd have thought that you were clued in to the low level MDP chess game during that innocent discussion that you and Joel had with sprinkled members of SMPA a few weeks ago.

As you go through this campaign, what you need to decide is whether you're going to stay true to your goals - focusing on Maplewood first - and stay out of the Democratic infighting or whether you're going to play the role now apparently being reserved for you: unwitting dupe.

Sad to say Ed, but by my current estimation, you're not a very good chess player.

"I might vote for David, and Joel might also."

WOW! This is a tough call Ed. Now what if Fred and Ian start treating you as a legitimate candidate? I know Fred has a lot of books about municipal government, and what if he answered your questions straight up, is there any chance you MAY change your mind, MAYbe???

I mean, David is a nice guy and all, and if his wife takes over the bookstore he probably can lend you a lot more books...

I just don't know Ed, right now based on my latest scientific MOL POLE survey, I figure you guys are clearly favored to win in November, so maybe you should hold off on your pick for Mayor until you see who’s going to give you the most respect, the most books, and offers you the best seats in January...

Dave

Last year you opened the Fall General Election Online Debate thread on September 20th. It is now September 27th. Do you plan to start soon?

I noticed that the Democratic Candidate thread started last week has been sublimated. Any reason?

Mssrs Fruitcake, Sbenois, Christensen:

As I sit here in my law office burning the midnight oil, I have one thing to say abouut my runningmates answer; at least he answered the question; and by the way reading the old archieved debates from 2002 and 2001 and the positions Ken and KAthy took over time, I can see why they refuse to debate us one line so far since their answers on questions like Fred Profet and the revel changed overtime. Good night now as Ed and Ralphie and I need to be in front of the MAplewood Post OFfice 9AM. Come by and ask us questions in person there.

Hello, Folks -- In the education discussion, there's quite a lot of heat related to guest students. What can the mayor, or official Maplewood, do towards accurately assessing the problem, and solving it? I realize that town government does not equal school district government, but what legally can the mayor etc. do? As a recently arrived resident, with an elementary school-aged child, I'm very concerned. We moved here in part because of the press related to what a great town this is. That said, if the schools have problems with unofficial students, I have a problem with the accolades this town has received. I am a Democrat, but I've been known to vote for Republicans locally if they offer the best solution to a local issue. Thanks much.

Ed May, you said "When elected to the Maplewood Township Committee, Joel Ziegler and I plan to solve the "illegal student" problem once and for all." Joel Ziegler, you said "If you live in Maplewood and care about the illegal students problem and want it solved vote for Ed May and me."

What actions do you propose?

If anyone goes after the illegal students, I hope that he/she does a cost/benefit analysis, so that the investigation doesn't cost more than the savings we get from eliminating the illegal students. I don't condone any abuse of any system, but every system is abused somewhat, and not every policing effort is cost-justified.

Ed:

On September 3, 2003, I asked you a question on this thread regarding the problems facing the Police Department and the steps you would take to resolve them. Since then I have reminded you at least once previously in this thread and at least four times in person that you have yet to answer the question. When can I expect an answer? It seems inappropriate for you and Joel to criticise others for not responding to your questions of them (unsolicited) when you have still not responded to my question (solicited).

I look forward to your reply.

Hello Joan

We gave you an initial answer on line early on. When we chatted at the Broadview BBQ and the Courter Block Party, I listened to your input and gave you a few more details. Joel and I prefer not to give the rest of the answer until we have gathered more facts and opinions from the relevant parties. The question was about Police Morale and how to improve it. The Democrats in office have not solved the problem; Kathy and Ken do not have a solution; please wait a little longer for Joel and Ed's response.

Ed:

Here is the question, in case you have forgotten:

What do you see as the key problems facing the Maplewood Police Department at this time and what would you do to improve the situation?

If you see morale as the key problem facing the Maplewood Police department, that does indeed serve as a partial answer to my question. Howver, the question is far broader than that and could extend to staff, deployment, equipment, physical plant, and other related issues as well.

The proposal by the present TC to build a new police building on Springfield Avenue can be seen as direct action being taken to reduce some of the problems facing the police department so it would NOT be correct to state that the present administration is not trying (however belatedly) to do something about the problem.

Looking foward to your response.

Joan

Friends, Maplewoodians, Countymen and Women:

I may be a spanking new graduate of the Sbenois Computer School but I have to ask the question:

Why is http://www.pettis-leventhal.org/thepettisleventhalplan.htm, which the K&K new banner ad brings us to, still comparing Kathy and Ken to Vic and Jerry, and telling voters to vote in the June primary?!?!

Hello, Kathy
Hello, Ken

Joel and I are your opposition now!

ALL THE WAY WITH ZIEGLER-MAY!!!
