Who is Daver?

Anyway, lawn signs should be used. It's a way to let people know there's an election and helps increase turnout. However, I do agree the signs should not employ International Orange or Lime Green as colors.

I say this as an independent busineman [sic], as well.

Edwardo

Sorry I missed you at the Pub tonight but I will see you at 9AM in Ricalton Square for the Saturday morning cleanuip event. With all due respect to Daver:

For the sake of the town's beauty, the May-Ziegler Campaign offers to refrain from using lawn signs, if the Pettis-Leventhal Campaign agrees to do likewise. We won't put up signs if they do not put up signs. The choice is theirs. "Lawn sign free in 2003" or the traditional cacophony of distracting placards that detract from Maplewood's bucolic fall beauty.

How do you like them apples?

I guess that means "We can't afford the lawn signs again this year."

Dearest All,

I am so pleased to announce that this evening the boys at Sbenois Photography finally finished developing the roll of film I took at last week's SOMBI meeting covering TQM. During this meeting I paid special attention to the reactions that Don had when Eduardo was speaking:

,rickles

Slide 1: The moment when Eduardo began to go over why TQM was important for us as human beings

Slide 2: The moment when Eduardo was interrupted by Dr. Kook who asked "where did you get that tie?"

Slide 3: Don asking Eduardo to please quit the race as his running mate.

Slide 4: Don watching with glee as Marilyn stumps Eduardo with a question on the mating habits of malnourished tropical fish.

Dearest All,

I am so sorry. I missed this next one. It was when Don came running out of the SOMBI meeting 20 minutes before it ended. He looked pretty unhappy.

Here is a picture of the new kids toy in Ed and Don's political toolbox. This is why they don't have money for lawn signs.

Both camps want to add ratables, but K&K want to add to staff to do so.
K&K want to regionalize services with other towns; E&J recognize this trend.
Both camps emphasize the Police Department as a key area to address.
K&K believe that ‘cooperation and coordination’ can be demanded.
K&K want to promote good citizenship among children; actually E&J agree.
K&K want to enforce zoning codes; actually so do E&J.
K&K want strategic budgets in departments and organizational restructuring.
E&J offer a complete management concept that has proven effective in other communities where all levels and functions form teams to improve processes, reduce waste, lower costs, and increase taxpayer satisfaction.

Focusing on the differences between our platform and theirs:

The MAY-ZIEGLER platform offers a complete management concept that has proven effective in other communities where all levels and functions form teams to improve processes, reduce waste, lower costs, and increase taxpayer satisfaction. The MAY-ZIEGLER platform addresses many more key areas. K&K want to add staff. K&K believe that ‘cooperation and coordination’ can be demanded. Only May and Ziegler are talking about LOWERING taxes.

Dearest Eduaro,

ANYONE can talk about lowering taxes. Why just the other day, during a discussion I was having with my daughter on nuclear proliferation, she stopped and said Daddy, I want to lower our taxes.

So she must be qualified for the TC as well.

Dearest Sbenuaro:

1) If "ANYONE can talk about lowering taxes", why don't we hear Kathy and Ken talking about lowering taxes? Are you calling Kathy and Ken "NOBODIES"?

2) If we assume for the moment that anyone can TALK about lowering taxes, and by some miracle Kathy and Ken started to talk about lowering taxes, how would their plan stack up against ours?

3) Are they planning to go after illegal students at $10,000 a student? We are. Will they vote "NO" to school budget increases if they get on BOSE? We will. Do they support Candy Straight's plan to eliminate waste, fraud, and patronage in Essex County? We do. Are they experts in the TQM processes that have been proven to cut costs and improve services in municipalities like ours? We are. Are they planning a free public seminar on their plan to cut taxes? We are planning such a seminar as we speak.

4) Is your daughter, (the lovely and talented, Sbenoisette), by any chance, a Republican ?????

I just read this entire thread, but that's OK. I get to atone for it on Monday. By the way, since Town Hall is opened late on Monday, may I assume they will be serving food for those of us who would like to break our fast?

I was most disturbed by Ed May's posting of his date of birth. Is he really younger than I am? That is scary. And are Sbenois and Dave Huemer really running against each other for Congress next year. That's exciting! I will have a tough time deciding for whom to vote.

Now, seriously:

Noone elected to the TC is going to get our local property taxes lowered! It is beyond the power of the TC. The Municipal portion is a small fraction of our tax bill. Everyone talks of "cutting waste" but no candidate specifies exactly what budget items he or she intends to eliminate. And all the current candidates want to improve the Police facilities. Can that be done without money?

Get rid of "illegal students"? Of course! But as Mr. Little has pointed out it might cost more than it would save. And again, all the candidates are short on the specifics, the TC has limited input into the operation of the Schools, and this never seems to be a major issue in BOE elections. As to the "illegal housing" component, candidates May and Ziegler, as good Republicans, generally oppose more government regulation, except that they apparently want more regulation of landlords and Mr. May actually suggests legally limiting the number of non-related people who can live together. Isn't that extremely intrusive.

All four candidates say they want to run the Town like a business. Really? Perhaps no cliche is more absurd. Business is run for profit. How do the candidates propose to attract new customers to this "business".

After reading Ed and Joel's posts and noting Ken and Kathy's lack thereof, I'm beginning to miss Jerry and Vic, and they're still on the TC! And if you think this is sour grapes or sentimental nostalga or "beating a dead horse", let me ask you:

Do any of you doubt that either Jerry or Vic could readilly answer all of Sbenois questions and Joan's question factually, thoughtfully and with specific details?

Nope, don't doubt it for a minute. But, Mapleberry politics intervened.

Anon, it appears from what you posted, your old enough to know better...

All this negative stuff is very discouraging to say the least. Why not take another look at this thread and find something positive to post about our candidates?

These local residents are taking time out of their lives and away from their families, trying their best to make this a better place to live. Come on… give it up, and say something nice.

I know you can do it!

Fruitcake: Not a bar stool, but there is nothing wrong with the past. The Republicans are nostalgic for the Grasmere era. And maybe it's not the past. Jerry and Vic are still on the TC. On this very thread Ed May has praised them. If enough sensible Maplewoodians wake up and take a pencil with them to the polls, who knows?

Nohero: I knew you would agree with me. You are becoming my hero. I saw you watching from the cheap seats. I didn't even have enough cash for one of those and had to stay in the "standing room only" section.

Art: OK. The most positive thing about your candidates is that they are not Ken and Kathy. But I do admire them for putting themselves out there and not whining like a lot of other Republicans who are just negative and have the attitude that no Republican can ever win. Ed seems to be trying to come up with ideas. I met Joel during one of his previous campaigns and he is a gentleman and has been involved in this Town a long time. Heck Art, I'm so disgruntled by K&K and Profeta and Co. that I might even vote for your candidates! (Now may I criticise them?).

The only way local property taxes are going to go down is by a restructuring of the tax system in NJ. You can make the Municipal and School budgets as lean as possible and it would just be a drop in the bucket. I was accused of living in the past. OK, let's go back to the 60s. Imagine 200-300 middle class Maplewoodians sitting in at the Board of Freeholders or better still the Legislature and demanding tax relief! It would certainly get a lot of press and might actually start a movement. I don't see anything else moving the Legislature off their collective butts. Perhaps what we need on the TC is a rabble rouser.

Ed, Joel, what do you think?

Anon, ajc, No Hero, Sbenois (and Sbenoisette), et al

I myself have to usher the twelve o'clock mass at Our Lady of Sorrows in South Orange, and Ed is up in Maplweood Center campaigning, and then we have our weekly campaign meeting in my office at 2PM, and a block party to go to. May we have a few hours to formulate our answers and post them here on this thread? Thankey.

Joel, take your time, and light a candle for us. BTW, I won't be able to make the meeting this afternoon; we'll be the Garden State Arts Center with the family...

Anon,

My reference to living in the past was about Vic and Jerry, not taxes. Your own words said it best: sour grapes, sentimental nostalgia and beating a dead horse.
