JTA just called me and asked me to post this.

There appears to be an escaped bank robber with a gun being pursued in South Orange by both police cars and helicopters. She reports that there are police swarming in the Village, especially on Third, near Meadowbrook and also Montrose. Please keep all doors locked for safety sake.

I suppose they're trying to box him or her in. Any kind of description of the suspect? In a car or on foot?

Caucasian male with red hair and dark clothes is what I was told by my son's bus driver - he's apparently on foot.

The description above by hismom is what I heard on my scanner. They are searching the DPW site pretty hard with dogs right now.

I think the crime took place in Livingston based on the chatter about evidence being saved for Livingston detectives and it being "their case".

It's tough to follow right now but I'll post any relevant updates as they are available.

Livingston or Milburn bank- one cop shot (he had on a vest and will be okay). Robber shot, don't know his condition but the other bandit escaped.

Three guys tried to rob an armored car at Nero's. The three (two black males and one white w/red hair) fled after the guard shot the white male in the hip. They came into South Orange and turned down the dead-end block of Church Street where, apparently, the car was totaled. The two black males were apprehended in the brook between Church and the Gaslight Commons, they're searching for the white male. DPW is in lockdown. If I hear anything further, I'll post.

I went out on my deck when the ruckus started and looked at the helicopter hovering directly overhead.

What a day to be home sick!

They're following the brook, it seems. The guy was shot in the hip and I'd hope they can catch him fairly easily. If he just up and disappeared, it makes me think he's hiding nearby. Very disconcerting.

Under a car waiting for dark. Commuters returning to their cars should be extra careful.

According to a message that just went out to everyone searching for the suspect, Livingston police are not able to confirm it is a white mail with red hair.

So Mountain did a great job of handling this. Everyone had to be signed out. It seemed pretty orderly, but the kids were pretty freaked.

Thanks for posting this info; many of the parents had no idea what was going on.

I just came back from picking my kids up from school and encountered a roadblock at Ridgewood and Third. I could see there was a school bus parked diagonally across the intersection of Church and Third, and a cop car. So I proceeded on Ridgewood toward Maplewood, and at the intersection of Ridgewood and Walton (i.e., the entrance to DPW), there was another cop, plus John Gross, a bunch of vehicles, and a bunch of what I think were DPW personnel standing outside next to them. I drove on toward the intersection with Parker, which was completely jammed up. Saw a county cop. By now, three helicopters were circling. I turned around and went back to Ridgewood, cut left down Jefferson to Valley, and made a right to wend my way back through traffic eastward and northward to my house.

Just heard sirens about five minutes ago.

They've reopened Third Street and there are several news vans on the DE side of Church, plus an annoying news helicopter directly above my house. Still no word on an apprehension.

Soulful, respiratory infection finally got me, I'm thinking. Left work early yesterday and feel not-so-hot. Thanks for asking
