This is a concern for all. If it is as large as the one in Manhattan, then it is a really big copy. At a board meeting where the tauistas wore T-shirts and gave out gift bags to the Board, there was mention that it is as high as the gazebo. If so, a fifteen to eighteen feet high metallic blob seems to be ferric overkill. Does anyone have the dimensions? jd |

Wouldn't it be a nice service to the taxpayers if ALL residents could see a rendering of this project before it is built? |

Perhaps we should put in in the area behind the student center at SHU - the big lawn behind the fence on S Orange Ave. Everyone would see it when they drove by, but it would be protected. |

Is that yellow thing an 'eye?' The thing is too big for the area they want to put it in. I agree with SOlady. Give it to SHU! MHD You are kidding, right? It's really not bigger then the picture you posted? |

Good lord that thing is Way to big. I have mostly observed the issue of the sculpture up till now but one thing sticks out for me. No one, not even the instigators of the project, claim it is an attractive piece of art. Rather, the impetus for this seems to be to "honor" or "acknowledge" a well known or respected previous south orange resident. I must ask therefore, would the trustees and supporters be as committed to publically funded memorials/testaments to Kevin Spacey, Lauren Hill, Elizabeth Shue, or TS Monk? Why should this one resident's professionall achievemets garner so much attention and tax money. Fine he was a leader in his field - Lauren Hill won at least 3 Grammys a few years back - talk about being recognized in your field. THis whole thing strikes me as being rather elitest. But again I conclude with the fact that even the most ardent supporters don't claim this is an attractive piece of art. I guess I should be grateful that the female performance artist (Karen something or other) who was known for doing such outrageous things as incorporating fecal matter into her "art" isn't a SO resident - can you imagine what we'd be forced to deal with then? |

I for one am glad the BOT is focusing energies on this rather than the crappy- drinking water, or empty storefronts, or poorly maintained parks, or astronomical taxes in this town, because once this statue is in place all those things will probably not seem quite so important any more. Living in the shadow of this thing will bring immeasurable peace and joy to our very souls, which is not something you could say of, for example, water that doesn't destroy everything it comes in contact with.

Bailey, nice job.... that's the ugliest - oh no, we still have shop rite to look at if we turn our heads to the right, but it comes close.... I don't see how this could possibly be worth a half million bucks. WE NEED A RECALL<<< THIS MUST NOT HAPPEN at taxpayers' expense. Mr. DeVaris please put an end to this ludicrous, antic, bizarre, burlesque, comic, comical, crazy, droll, grotesque, farcical, foolish, funny, gelastic, oddball, incongruous, laughable, nonsensical, outlandish, preposterous, ridiculous, risible, silly, zany piece of art I've seen considered for a public bond issue. Do our trustees lose all sense of reasonableness once elected to office?

Thank you Bailey! (So this is why noone is showing anyone an artist's rendering of how it will look.) Now, if you could try to show us an angle that includes the historic firehouse; I think that is the contrast the artsy folks chose this spot for.

Unbelievable, even if the scale is slightly off, which I'm sure someone will argue it is, the pure architecture of Tau, just doesn't fit in this location. I'm shocked that all the so called 'art lovers' of this statue haven't yet noticed this. Bailey, thanks for posting these.

yes, truly an "impact" on the downtown. people will really want to hang out around that thing. Remember the decorated cows of a few years ago? (actually there were a couple that made it to SO!) -- lets get a herd of them for downtown. Our theme, obviously, should be "orange" -- orange cows, cows with oranges, you get the idea. We'll be a model for the art world, drawing all sorts of attention to ourselves... Who'll start the fundraising? |

That would look much better if it were down by the duck pond perhaps it could be worked into the design for the River Walk project, but to put that in downtown? WTF! |

That sculpture looks so out of place there against the architecture of the firehouse and train station.. It looks like a leftover prop from the sequel to the sequel of 2001, A Space Odyssey. Let's put it in the backyard of whoever thought this was a good idea |

MHD, I'm conflicted by a non-profit training I have to attend. However, I think that one key fact of which to remind the BOT is that the current site was chosen at least in part to allow the use of the redevelopment monies, which are site specific. Since we can't use that money, we should have a real discussion about siting if they are planning to go ahead with this project. (I'm resigned/willing to pay my $44+ per family, but would like a location that actually works) |

Susan, Couple points of clarification: - the redevelopment money (CDBG Grant) was not "site specific" - it was to pay down debt for SOPAC. Geographic area was irrelevant. - According to Calabrese (& I believe Ms. Arnedt also) the site was chosen by Smith's widow (before she passed away) Whether that last point is true or not, I have no idea. |

I know the scale may be a tad off, since I don't know the thing's actual dimensions, but I agree that's not the best place for it. I think the duck pond or the riverwalk areas are great suggestions. If we're going to pay for it anyway, lets have some say as to where it ends up. (Maybe the roof of SOPAC, so it can be seen from space?) I'd like to hear from those "artsy" people who want it near the firehouse.
