Very creative Bailey. Why don't you go a couple of steps further and photograph some areas around town that might be appropriate locations and drop the Tau in. Please post.. we'll all vote (not that it would count for anything, but it could be amusing). |

Um...I've been saying that all along...tag city!! This thing reminds me of the monolith from 2001: A Space Oddessy...except instead of apes dancing around it, there are BOT members and "Art-Lovers"...although there isn't much difference... |

Obviously if we put this thing up, we need to factor in the cost of security cameras so that we can arrest and fine anyone who tags the thing for the cost of restoration... |

I think the duck pond is a much, much better location. I'll be really disappointed if the sculpture ends up at the train station. Who decided the train station was a good location???????? |

composerjohn, - According to Calabrese (& I believe Ms. Arnedt also) the site was chosen by Smith's widow (before she passed away) Whether that last point is true or not, I have no idea. |

Forget graffiti. How about pigeon droppings? Will the village appoint a Poopsmith to maintain "The Tau of Bill" on a daily basis? That thing will be covered in off white streaks in a few short weeks. ps: Before Mary Theroux gets the gig, I'd like to submit my resume to the BOT to consider me for Poopsmith. does that position come with a vehicle too? |

Funny, Matt! I had the pigeon thought too, shortly after I posted about grafiti. Maybe we can electrify the thing to kill the pigeons before they.. um.. Of course, then we'll need someone to pick up the pigeons. You available for that position, Matt? |

whats wrong with you people. That is ART! Dont you understand the significance, no the importance, no the absolute criticality of the TAU? My god. I know art when I see it and damn it, thats art. A big black block of art. It looks spectacular against both the train station and the firehouse. Why people will come from miles around just to see our Tau. umm - dont flame me, that was sarcasm |

Perhaps we can put in inside the library, so when it rains, it will keep the water off the floor, instead of those pesky buckets they use now? or Perhaps we can put it on the roof of Village Hall, so the birds can nest inside the sculpture, instead of in the eves of the roof of Village Hall, like they do now? |

Let's put it to good use. Maybe a police sub-station can be opened inside of it or a hot dog stand. What were those people thinking when they agreed to this? How did they think this was going to be a positive for the town? It is so ugly and absurd it is beyond comprehension. |

Peter- A very big NEGATIVE IMPACT at that...Please, someone, go talk to Tony Smith's family. Ask them if they've taken any of this into consideration and if not, to please listen to what other residents have to say. Look at the pictures posted here and ask if this is really how they want t honor the memory of their loved one. Hopefully they will change their mind. |

maybe we can convince the BOT to get the dimensions of "Tau" reduced. Say, something like the mini-Stonehenge from "This is Spinal Tap". "And, O' how the wee little children of Stonehenge danced about it in the moonlight." -Nigel Tufnel |

Glock: You are in the 2001 ballpark, which was entered first by the undersigned. Welcome. We are being watched, and if the News Record, Star Ledger or NY Times would publish the rendering from Bailey, maybe the elite would wake up from their ego driven sleep. Maybe not. But, Glock, Sig Sauer away!!! jd

Didn't Ms Arnedt say at the BOT meeting that some TV station was going to do a documentary about this scultpure and the South Orange installation. Does anyone know who the TV station is and does anyone know someone there? I wonder what the story is and if they really have a feel for community sentiment given all these issues which have come to light - from the funding obfuscation, the inappropriate location, the misguided priorities of the BOT's, etc. |

I wouldn't mind if the News Record wanted to print them, don't know if they need permission since I've posted them on a public board, I'm guessing it's public domain at this point. I really would like for more people to see them, I'm thinking I should print them on a large format printer and stand them on an easel under the gazebo for all to see. It's just so darned cold!

Cagey, I am willing to bet that not one single person here on MOL has even bothered to communicate their outrage to the BOT (other than here on MOL). We'll see tomorrow if any Letters to the Editor were submitted to the News Record. If people simply continue to "vent" here on MOL, nothing will change. I expect every single person that vents on this thread to speak at the next BOT Meeting. Otherwise Bailey has shown you the "ghost of Christmas Future" Write a Letter to the Board of Trustees: ajosrosen@aol.com arthur@mec.cuny.edu mrosnernyc@yahoo.com stacey.jennings@hp.com nishesq@optonline.net WCfuzzy@aol.com edevaris@southorange.org Attend the next BOT Meeting and SPEAK UP Venting on MOL has NO impact. If you are tired of this behavior, DO SOMETHING |

MHD - as you know, I'm very much opposed to the funding aspect for TAU and the location is upsetting as well. However, the BOT has already voted on this issue and have entered into an agreement with the Smith estate. Because damage has been done - what do you suggest is a remedy? Obviously a breach of contract could potentially have severe legal and financial ramifications, thoughts? |

Interesting question. If the Smith estate was gifting the rights to the Tau, under certain conditions, with SO paying the fabrication, what monetary loss has the estate sustained if SO breaches the contract? Any lawyers out there? This is all hypohetical of course. I don't think SO would just walk away and let the estate sue for damages. Edited to add: Unless there are some kind of damages specified in the contract, it seems that a gift is being made under certain conditions, and if those conditions aren't met, the gift is not given. |

Sheena, I have learned that proposing tangible ideas here on MOL only gives Matthews & Gross time to prepare reasons to shoot the idea down. I think there are plenty of things that can be done and they should be brought before the BOT in public. |

I believe that we are in contract with the estate and the fabricator. The fact that the BOT was misled (ok, lied to)into thinking that the lion's share of the cost of this project would come from Grant money does not negate the contract. Whatever we owe them must be fullfilled one way or another. My question regarding the contract with the estate is if there is a time frame for installation. Can we meet with the TS committee representatives and find a more appropriate venue for display? I like the sclupture - just not in that small congested little area. |

I stood and looked at that spot this morning...I think motorists will be frightened by it as they approach. Also, since it is such a small circle, isn't it possible that the sculpture could prove dangerous by blocking the view ahead? |

By the way, you might consider breaching the contract, upon grounds of misfeasance, or worse, let the estate depose town gov officials, and an independent lawyer hired to rep the town, because of conflicts due to misrepresenting funding to public, gets to question the Right Honorable druggist and the town scrivener and amanuensis about the agreements and representations to the public and federal granting authority. I volunteer. jd |

Well, there are no damages if there was a breach, unless the town's Clarence Darrow incoporated a liquidated damages clause, to punish the town. Negotiate a small buy out, and be done with it. jd |

As far as my knowledge, and I have not read the contract itself, but I believe the location is in the contract itself as it was determined by the art community in South Orange and the estate prior to Mrs. Smith passing. |

But what damages would there be if we reneged? Breach of contract only carries a penalty if there are real damages. |
