JB Actually it was my friend who heard it on a scanner and emailed me about it at 5:30 this morning. I heard helicopters at that time but was still half alseep and hadn't checked my email yet. By the time I logged on to check it was almost 6:40am. He had sent two emails. The first saying the bear was on Scotland Road and Willow in Orange. A few minutes later he sent another email saying the bear was on South Orange Ave near the Newark South Orange border. I had just finished typing that info to post when my nephew asked if I knew where the bear was now. I emailed my friend asking if he knew where it now was because more then an hour had passed from when he first emailed me. That's when he told me the bear was behind the college on Sinclar, I called the police who confirmed yes a bear was behind the college. Would you believe SHU security wasn't even aware of this? I called there a few minutes ago to see if they had any information and the gentleman who answered the phone started laughing when I told him. Guess he's busy checking it out. Same with the Ledger. Maybe they'll have someone on their 'breaking news' sectin like they did yesterday... |

Well looks like the Star Ledger finally got on it! Looks like they forgot to mention it bing in the Tuxedo Park area. Beware: This Newark bear's claws are real Newark police, armed with shotguns, searched backyards and high trees in the city's Vailsburg section this morning for a large black bear that was spotted throughout the area and neighboring town, as children made their ways to school. The officers cordoned off backyards along Richelieu Terrace, near Lennox Place, searching backyards and looking up the large, leafy trees that line streets. Richelieu Terrace is situated a few blocks behind the Seton Hall University campus. It was not immediately know if any alerts were issued. But Newark is part of the state's Bear Exclusion Zone, and the bear will be shot if found. It is apparently the same 250-pound bruin that was spotted in Livingston yesterday morning, before it disappeared into a wooded area and was left alone. But its fate may not be the same now that it now wandered into an urban area and police and animal control officers tracked it with tranquilizer guns. The animal was first spotted in Orange shortly after 3 a.m. in backyards along Willow Street and Scotland Road. Police rushed to the scene with shotguns but lost track of the animal. About 30 minutes later, resident on Finley Place in South Orange began called 911 after they spotted the bear in their backyards. But the animal again disappeared, and at 5:30 a.m. and about a mile and half way in Irvington, it was spotted on neighborhood streets near Madison and Stuyvesant avenues. By 6 a.m., residents in the Vailsburg section began called Newark police after spotting the bear ambling about. There apparently were no sightings near Newark Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, home of the Bears baseball team. Those Bears are out of town playing the Camden Riversharks tonight and tomorrow. They return home Friday at 7:05 p.m. to host the Atlantic City Surf.

I was walking down SO Ave. and snapped this picture of the bear, who is now holding little Taylor Mitchell hostage outside that pizza joint. When the police showed up with guns in hand, the nervous bear said, "Oh my!"

This is twice that Livingston has caused South Orange a problem recently. First the armored car heist and now the traveling bear. I think the BOT should pass a resolution asking that "what happens in Livingston, stays in Livingston". Heck, it works for Las Vegas. I usually root for the underdog so I am sad that this very resourceful creature is going to be shot down like he was John Dillinger. I am not usually sensitive about killing wildlife, but this bear sure has a lot of moxy and, as the old saying goes, travels fast, travels light and travels far. |

Leave it alone and it'll go home, wagging it's tail behind him. (If it can make it thru all the traffic in downstown S.O. You really can't get anywhere (at least at 8:30 this morning) |

Maybe the bear is in SO to see the Tony Smith Sculpture or perhaps see a performance at the SOPAC? Rumor has it bears are great supporters of the arts. I saw the bear was in Livingston last evening with a "Comming to SO Soon" sign on his back. |

Yeah VIG, this is some bear. The reports yesterday pegged him at 200 pounds and it appears he put on 50 pounds in 24 hours...while covering probably close to 15 miles while being chased by the police. This is some bear. SAVE THE BEAR |

I don't understand why they have to kill the bear? Why can't they give it to the zoo? Or a circus? While stuck in traffic at almost 8am by the brook a Newark SUV Police Vechile and a South ORange Police car went flying up the Ave. By the time I made my way through the detour meses on Ridgewood to Montrose Ave there was ar helicoptor hovering around the area that wasn't there when I left the house at 7:50am. Seems the bear was still on the loose. As of a few minutes ago when I last asked my friend hasn't heard any chatter on the scanner. Thought is the bear is toast or they've lost site of it again. How can you loose site of something THAT big! BTW the picture of good posted is cute! |

Bears are smart and unfortunately they remember where they get free meals (ie/ garbage cans) and will return. Since this one isn't afraid of an urban area it would need to be located very far from people. A zoo or other caged environment would be the only option if they catch it alive. |

My guess is this is why they didn't let the Marshall kids line up outside this morning? Maybe they were worried about a bear wandering into a schoolyard filled with hundreds of kids. Oy. The drama. |

I think he gave the cops the slip again. He is probably holed up under a bush somewhere waiting for nightfall to make another dash for freedom. His best bet would be South Mountain Reservation where there is plenty of food and hiding places. They wouldn't get him until they import a pack of coon hounds from Tennessee or West Virgina. Latests news: Buzzsaw was seen petting the bear on third street. Also, there are unconfirmed reports that the bear's next stop will be Dave's garbage can. Buzzsaw is said to have provided directions and given the bear money. Charges may be brought up. |
