Does anyone know when (which day) the fireworks at Flood Hill are taking place? What about fireworks in our neighboring towns? MM |

South Orange's events were not listed in the summary that News-REcord published last Thursday. This could have been because no one from the town responded to a request from the paper (hello Mr. Gross?) or that the News-Record failed to include South Orange's info. I would believe either and both. South Orange has always had fireworks at dusk on July 4. |

At last night's meeting, before voting to award the contract for 4th of July Fireworks, Ms. Abrams asked if anyone else wanted to discuss it, as if to imply there had been some debate behind Closed Doors about whether or not to even have the fireworks this year. |

I heard thru th gossip that it was almost not going to happen, but one or two trustees refused to allow the town to stop the event this year. Whats the real story? |

How come Maplewood has had an organized July 4 schedule advertised for the past several weeks and South Orange has said nothing several days before the event? |

Good question. If I recall, usually there's a 4th of July program/flyer with the Gaslight, but I don't think there was one this year. It's not just the fireworks, usually there's entertainment and kids' events in the park by the duck pond most of the day, but I don't remember seeing anything about it this year. Maybe in tomorrow's News Record...? For that matter, how about the music in the park program? Is that out yet? Granted I've been a little blanked out lately. |

I attended a public safety meeting a few months back at which there was some discussion as to whether or not to hold the fireworks at all--given that last year, there were quite a number of rowdy incidences and a few arrests. Guess it was decided to go forward with them. mjc: Do you mean the Wednesday night concerts held at Flood's Hill in July? I have seen flyers for those--I believe Janis Ian is one of the scheduled performers. |

noracoombs: That is correct about the public safety meeting. I had it on the agenda almost every month while waiting to hear about alternatives or solutions to help control the large crowds (and there were several incidents and a few arrests). In the end, the majority of the BOT decided to continue as usual. There will be more police on duty this year. One decison was to not advertise outside of S. Orange. Worrall publications prints a master list of all the fireworks in the area in their publications. Some towns charge or only allow residents. Some of us felt it was best not to advertise when trying to limit the number of people from other towns coming here just for the free fireworks. In my opinion, we need to figure out a way to limit the fireworks to residents and their guests. Not sure what the best solution is going forward, but the BOT should be prepared to consider alternatives for next year. I hope to see everyone from MOL at flood's hill this year.

newtoallthis: We need to have a location that can be safely enclosed and would allow for that kind of crowd control. It is something we are looking into doing next summer. I really think it is the only long-term solution. OR perhaps we can figure out a way to do fireworks for both towns at one location.

Both towns - one location - limited to residents of these communities - shared services and resources which should end up reducing the burden of the overall cost - now that would be progress. |

Mark Is it true the fireworks will be Monday this year? A way to cut down on all the traffic is to close the streets leading to the park. Maybe close off all the street between Montrose and Mead from Ridgewood to Vose? Except to those who live on those streets? Why can't Floods Hill be enclosed? Residents need to show a recreation badge to gain entrance. Maybe charge for each guest. |

FSM- While it does say Fourth of July events, it does not say they will take place ON 4 July. Some people at the game tonight mentioned the events will take place Monday night. Thus my reason for asking Mark to confirm the information. But, thanks as usual for following me around to correct my short comings. What would I do without you? |

Rumor has it that the fireworks were originally scheduled for the fourth, then Village Hall was seriously considering changing it to the third. It has since been confirmed for the fourth. This flip-floping may have been what JTA was hearing, hence the confusion. I don't know if a town can legally limit spectators to residents, but you do generally find that towns that charge a fee (even a nominal one) will somehow get less of an undesired element showing up at their celebration. Not advertising is a good start, but the Village may have to think about fencing off Flood's Hill and charging admission in the future. |

Thanks combustion. I'll have to make sure my sister knows this because she still thinks it's Monday. Noodle- When you are told something last week (as my sister was) by someone who works for the town and is one of those who would be setting up the area for the fireworks they were going to be held Monday night, you tend to believe said person. Thus, when people at the game were discussing this and two different nights were being mentioned, with more saying the fireworks were going to be Monday, one would ask for clarification from let's see, maybe a BOT member? No? Anyway, combustion explained where the confusion came from. I have to tell you how comforting it is you find me so interesting you can't help but look out for me. Good to know someone like you is watching my back! |

Bets- Not exatly. Some of the streets are blocked off. I do live in the area and I can tell you there are just as many cars from people who do not live here as had been in the past. Come sit in front of my house after the fireworks this year. It takes about an hour for allthe cars to get out of the area. |

No outside advertising is a good start. Selling tickets or requiring town ID, such as pool passes, is the next step. However, the temporary fencing off of Flood's Hill would be an expensive and arduous task. |

They used to have the fire works at the pool site; where they would block off the enterance of the road at the beginning of the park were the two colliums were and collect a fee. the bridge from the duck pond and the enterance off of mead street also were blockedoff to take a fee years ago to control the crowds. |

Yes, fencing off the area would be expensive and labor intensive. However, charging admission or checking ID's would do no good without some sort of boundary control. Does anyone out there know the legalities to restricting the events to town residents? That's probably a question for the lawyers. It's a shame that a few hooligans ruin a good thing for everyone, but when you have something like this for free, the wrong element is going to come out and freeload. Charge $5 a head. You will discourage at least some of the riff-raff, and also help offset the cost of hiring people to set up and take down all the fences. |

My sister has a flier that listsa number of the surround area's with fireworks. South Orange is one of them. It has a url of thelocalsource.com but I can't find the info on the site I'm going to scan and upload it to prove to the usual idiots who like to follow me around and question me. |
