the parking lot is totally full by 8 a.m. I remember in past years there was some commuter parking going on there, but not to this extent. Can we do anything about this? everyone is parking in the handicap spaces. In the past the police have given tickets for parking there. Will they do that now? |

I would hope they would! Its parking for handicapped individuals, regardless of their desitination, day, or time. |

The property does not belong to the village, it belongs to the Board of Ed. They would have to complain to the police or parking authority, (I don'l know which) in order for tickets to be issued. |

Well, it has become totally ridiculous. You can't park go to the pool at all lately. We call need to call the PA and/or the BOE tomorrow and try to work out a solution. Three hour parking signs should do it! |

fiche- I'm not so sure about that. When I use to pick a friend's child up from camp a few years ago, I called the police more then once about cars in handicap at SOJH. They come and ticketed. |

? 8am The pool doesn't even open until 10am on weekends and 12pm on weekdays. Is it possible you just caught a day when something else was going on there? We get there every weekend at 10 or 10;30am and have no problem getting a spot. |

Weekends aren't the problem. It's commuters during the week that are using the lot since the Shoprite lot closed. The fill it up to catch the rush hour trains and then when pool people arrive in the afternoon the spots are all full with the daily parkers. |

On the train platform you hear talk like "don't pay to park, park at the school since its summer" Seems to me the PA ought to work a deal with the school board to police the lot in the ams. /p |

How about parking stickers issued with proof of residency and auto registration? At least then they would be South Orange residents - be they swimmers or commuters. All others get ticketed. |

What if people were coming as guests to the pool? They automatically get ticketed? They have to go to village hall to get special passes? Sounds like a dumb idea to me. |

OK - I'm so glad this was the first posting in this section, because I was considering starting my own.... Went to the pool today at about 11am - there were at least 4 cars taking up double spots, enough to make it impossible for another car to get in - also, people were parked all over the place - any place with any semblance of a curb - saw two cars parked all over that corner curb right across from where you walk to the bridge to get to the pool - Friday, I saw at least 3 cars parked in handicapped parking - one woman parked there, and RAN to the pool (feeling guilty? I don't know)... It's really frustrating - with cars parked all over like this, it made it much more difficult to walk through there with a kid, because cars are all over, and other cars zipping around trying to get around each other.... I was just going to say - in addition to my frustration at the serious lack of parking (especially during the week when commuters are parking there and walking to the train), I just hope people try to be considerate and think about the fact that other people are also looking for spots - so please try to leave as much space for the next guy as you can, ok? thanks |

What might work is to make the school lot three or four hour parking zone. You could swim in peace but not park for a 8-9 hour day in NYC. Of course, the PA would have to monitor and ticket causing others to complain about the town trying to unethically raise money but hey, AI think its a plan.

Not so ridiculous, Lil Glock. Employees get permits to put in their car windows and I doubt anyone stays at the pool non stop for 4 hours. If so, they are around to move the car to a different spot, something a commuter can't do. |

they should also paint some lines in. Where there aren't any lines painted the cars tend to spread out and you could fit a few more cars in. there sure are a lot of handicap spots (and they aren't the closest ones to the pool since they are really there for when the school is open). Glock, when do you swim? and why are you so quick to shoot down any ideas? i actually think if you made it 8 hours max it would cut out most commuters. |

The majority of people who are there probably have children with them, and if they are like me, they won't want them being in the sun for hours upon hours, and will either call it a day after a few hours, or go home, cool them off, and maybe head back later. I can't see many making a day of it, ie parking there for 7+ hours... |

VG, when the Pool is closed I think there are more spots back there than the school needs. But with the pool open and the school closed, it's becomming impossible to go for a swim unless you live within walking distance. I don't mind walking a little bit, but I would hate to have to schlepping a toddler, a stroller and infant, etc. Difficult and dangerous. |

To be honest, i've never given a thought to parking there, I go to the pool later in the day and have always managed to find a space at the Baird (let's hope this continues!!!!!) but I know it must be frustrating wanting to go and not being able to park. Also, as N-LL says it's very tricky when smaller kids are involved too. |

Glock- Guests can't get into the pool without a resident. Erie- Perhaps what the town should do is give x amount of commuter residents permits to park in the lot by the South Orange Ave side of the lot. Make the lot and ALL the streets around the park -Mead, Meadowbrook, Ridgewood, "No parking before 9am," instead of 7am. Then take it a step further and make it permit parking before 9am only. Then give (sell) permits to South Orange residents only. That should cut down on a lot of the out of towners parking there. I drive through the park about 6:45am and there are always a few cars already parked on Meadowbrook. My sister, who drives through there about an hour earlier says cars there before 6am. Glock- Why would you have to the pool to move your car? The same reason you have to put more money in a meter if you park at a meter. We need to do something. Friends of mine met me at the pool the other day. They had to park way over at the top of Mead Street, after driving around for 15 minutes. They would have been better off parking at my house and walking! |

It would be great if the pool had short-term (say, 10 minutes) parking space for those who need to pick up/drop off kids. |

Spoke to the Parking Authority who said I need to speak to the BOE>. If anyone has any complaints, call the BOE at 973-762-5600, ask for the Board secretary and speak to Sharon. the more calls, the better. |

The village has been trying to work with the BOE for years to monitor the middle school lot during the summer. We did offer to monitor year round but the school says they have not really had a problem when school is in session. Several years ago I suggested giving parking stickers to any adult who purchased a recreation badge (also called a pool pass). This way we could at least limit the parking to residents (and even use that advantage at events like the fireworks). I won't go into who blocked that effort but I still think it makes sense to do. |

I think the town needs to take back the NJ Transit lot for its own residents and then none of this would be a problem, or build a parking deck for SO commuters instead of another sculpture or SOPAC. Real estate in this town has gone up in this town because of the midtown direct and I would say it would pay for the town to make it possible for people not served by the jitney to get to the station and park without having to steal spots from the pool. |

Neen: NJ TRansit has stated they will not sell this or any lot on the Morris and Essex line at this time. I/we have asked more than once. We need parking for village employees, and shoppers too if we want to attract better/more business. (and this problem is not unique to S. Orange ). |

mrosner: Has anyone looked into building a larger parking structure on SO village land and selling monthly spots? As one of those residents still waiting for a SO / NJTransit spot by the train (2 years and counting!) I would love to have an option since the jitney does not always work well for those of us with late nights. |

Joel: Sickley sold the property to NJ Transit. However, that deal was done with the cooperation of the BOT. Only Calabrese and Rosen remain from the BOT from when that took place and I do not know what their position was back then. Their were pros and cons for the village from reading the minutes. Sean: I do not know of any private developer that has said he would build a parking deck for a profitable business. At least two developers have stated if they get approvals to build their projects they would build a deck as part of the deal (on our property). How much it would cost, etc would have to be negotiated. The village is currently looking into building a deck on a village owned lot but that is still some time off.

It is a bit rough finding parking at the pool, especially during the mid-afternoon. After a few circles, someone usually is pulling out and I can park. But I am stunned by the many cars & SUV's that park in the handicapped slots. WOW! Handicapped parking is for the handicapped ONLY -- not because able bodies can't find a parking spot. |

I pulled in this am, about 6:30, and noticed how many cars were coming from N. Ridgewood. How about a RMP there, asking for proof of residency, e.g., license address. jd |
