Here are the current bookings, as listed by Pollstar:
Although there has been no notice of these performances posted on SOPAC's website (Get on the stick, there Webperson!), I'm getting pretty excited... (Please, post comments only about the acts, if you don't mind. I'm sure that by now we've all had enough of the usual villification of every/anyone associated with our little PAC.) -s. |

Will they be having any quality acts there, or is this the cream of the crop for SOPAC? |

Jeff Daniels? Are they for real? And Paula Poundstone has been on what? performing where lately? What about Kathy Griffin for comedy? And a little soul from Gladys Knight or hey, I dig some country too. What about Winona Judd? |

Richie Havens is AWESOME.. what a great performer. I saw him a few years ago, and he sang and played his heart out. And, afterwards, he sat and signed autographs, a wonderful evening, and a wonderful performer! Granted, he was better known back in the day, but his album "Mixed Bag" is legend. |

The Bad Plus is a fantastic trio. I've got their CD "Give" and it's great. See: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001AP0PY/ref=pd_bxgy_img_b/103-1752317-779824 4?ie=UTF8 Listen to samples from the first three or four cuts in particular. |

FWIW, Paula Poundstone is on NPR practically every weekend as a panelist on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell me. Some friends of mine won some tickets to a show of hers a few months ago and ended up raving about how good it was. |

John Pizzarelli and Tierney Sutton are both cabaret/jazz-type performers who are heard often on Jonathan Schwartz's weekend show on NPR. I've seen Tierney before in concert--quite a good show. I think there are some interesting names in that list. |

John Pizzarelli is quite talented. Personally, I think he's the best act on the roster. I see Jeff Daniels is on the list twice. I saw him perform on, um, shoot, maybe The Daily Show? Or Letterman? In any case, he was surprisingly....not bad. |

Eddie Palmieri is a latin jazz great. He performed with Tito Puente, and since Tito's passing may be his musical heir. People may travel from NYC to see him. That will be an interesting test of the train, SOPAC idea. No parking needed. J.B. |

How about Lauren Hill, since she's from SO. Or are they afraid that would introduce the wrong SO demographic? |

Laryn Hill would be great! She's combines r&b, jazz and hip-hop, so there's something for everyone. Good choice! What are the "demographics" for these concent series anyway? |

If you don't know who these performers are, any of them can be looked up using your favorite internet search engine for a quick and painless education, if you so choose. Or, you can spend that same time here posting about how you don't know who these people are or what they do, or better yet complain that since you haven't heard of them, they can't possibly be worth seeing.

They might be able to get Lauren for a benefit for some specific cause, but I don't think she's touring. It would be great to hear her sing again though. |

Unless Larynn Hill's tickets were something $500 I doubt she'll be there anytime soon. SOPAC is just not big enough to accommodate the number people they would need to sell tickets to in order to keep the prices down. I think the type of acts mentioned above is as good as it's gonna get at SOPAC. As I've posted before, we go to numerous concerts a year at 3-5 performing arts centers in the area, we'd love to be able to see them right here in town. But know it's not going to happen. In the next couple of months we're going to see Foreigner at Bergen PAC, Kenny Rogers at Count Basie, and Survivor at Saint George's. This doesn't count the shows at the Garden State Arts Center we're going to.

With all due respect, every one of the acts listed on the SOPAC roster would be preferable to and musically more talented than Kenny Rogers and Survivor. I would imagine that Lauryn Hill would be too expensive, particularly in SOPAC's first, untested season. |

There are (according to Jessica, the Center's Exec. Dir., in her short presentation to the BOT last night) more than 100 bookings already set, extending well into Summer 2007. Oh, and you want names? How about Yo-Yo Ma, one of a raft of world-class performers mentioned by Jessica as scheduled to appear at SOPAC's Mid-November Opening Gala. I just wish I could see the entire bookings list on the SOPAC website... -s. |

Tierney Sutton has a wonderful voice she recently performed a couple weeks in NYC this past spring. Having seen Ella Fitzgerald & Sarah Vaughn over the years and having a weak spot for female vocalists I'm excited that she's on the schedule. Are tickets already available? |

Of those 100 nights, about half are Seton Hall theater, I believe. However, I too am looking forward to seeing an actual schedule with the various things that she mentioned, as soon as it is practical. Last nights BOT updates were far more detailed than anything else that I've seen or heard in a long time...I hope they plan to keep up the openness. |

S.O.D.A. what about Yo-Yo Ma? I have heard the name dropped a few times, and yet I don't hear people clamoring for it. "every one of the acts listed on the SOPAC roster would be preferable to and musically more talented than Kenny Rogers and Survivor" I am not a fan of either, but you are wrong on this. You should have said, "The only listed on the SOPAC roster that would be preferable and musically more talented than Kenny Rogers and Survivor is Richie Havens circa 1965." I'm sure people have worked very hard to get these acts to play at the SOPAC, but with it's size I have to agree with JTA, they will never get any quality acts in there.

Frankly, I think it's a good list - I would like to see some folk musicians added to the mix though (still have Boots Like Emmy Lou's running through my head from last week's Janis Ian concert). And Mayor - Richie Havens is still amazing - saw him a couple of years ago and like the concert Bailey mentioned, he stayed and mingled with the people chatting and signing autographs. This type of interaction is something a smaller venue can provide as opposed to the mega-concerts JTA is attending.

Susan - were we watching the same meeting? I didn't hear a single update on the status of Shop Rite, Vose Ave, Beifus or Sayid. In addition, why was the presentation by Cheryl/Judy billed as "representatives from the Pierro Gallery" instead of as "representatives from the Tony Smith Sculpture Project" and why was there no public discussion on the "alternative plan"? It was great that SOPAC representatives were in attendance, but what did they really say about their fundraising plans, other than asking the taxpayers to put up more money? I'm not trying to bash you, I am just curious what "openness" you are referring to. |

Yo-Yo-Ma will be playing at the opening night gala and I heard tickets may be $500 pp. It's a lot of money, but they clearly need to really kick off some serious fund-raising and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Yo-Yo-Ma play in such an intimate setting. There's nothing listed on his website regarding the event, http://www.yo-yoma.com - although frankly there's nothing listed on SOPAC's site about it either www.sopacnow.org . They probably have to wait until construction is fully completed to avoid potential embarassment. GO SOPAC! We all need this thing to thrive! |

McCheese -- Your comments are negative and whiny. I noticed you wrote "Thank God I don't live in SO" in the BOT Forum. I couldn't agree with you more about that. People deal too much with the negative, with what is wrong. Why not try and see positive things, to just touch those things and make them bloom? -- Thich Nhat Hanh I've never responded well to entrenched negative thinking. -- David Bowie Let's not be narrow, nasty, and negative. -- T. S. Eliot Just can't live that negative way... make way for the positive day! -- Bob Marley |

So no offense, but who is the "we" in "No, we need it to fail so that we can bulldoze it and make the parking that we need."? Given that we taxpayers are on the hook for the failure of SOPAC, I'm pretty sure most South Orange residents would prefer that it succeed. I do understand your position, and I'd like more parking in town as well. But it's not likely to be where SOPAC is any time soon. |

Rastro, having gone to school in SO, and having worked in SO for 7 years, and having worked for almost 3 of those within spitting distance in the SOPAC I figure it is alright to say we. Maybe my taxes don't to there, but my livelihood was made there for many years. SOMets Fan - Negative maybe. Whiny, I don't think so. I didn't like the idea of SOPAC to begin with, and with so many other performing arts centers in a close radius to this one we will not get quality acts. This is illustrated in the listing of the acts that have been booked. As for you being glad I don't live in SO, that just isn't very nice. I don't even know you. Sorry I don't like your PAC center.

Mayor, understood. One thing to keep in mind is, given the size of the forum, big acts do not seem t be what they're going for. Sort of like how the Beacon Theatre in NYC doesn't go after the same acts as MSG. |

Mayor, I have to believe you are using hyperbole to make a point about parking. The reality is $Millions have been spent, SOPAC is the ONLY redevelopment project that has actually progressed, they intend to pay us back eventually all the money S.O. loaned plus interest - why even suggest it fail and be bulldozed?! I agree about there being a need for lots more parking, but that would be the most expensive parking garage in the world! |
