I just heard over my neighbor's radio that there's a water main break in South Orange, in front of a Duane Reade. They said the street and blacktop are caving in... I assume they mean the one on Springfield, even thought I don't think that's actually SO.

There is no Duane Reade in South Orange. Do they mean Rite Aid?

Hmmmm, doubt it. That would be a block from us and I don't see the kind of havoc on the ave that would cause. I guess we'll find out soon enough from someone.

Great. This morning I have discolored water and about 1/2 the pressure I normally have. Any updates on this? Ugh!

The water color seems ok here (in the Seton Hall neighborhood), but the water pressure was terrible. Made for a lovely shower this morning.

Third Street at Church was closed as was So. Ridgewood at SOA. There were several DPW trucks about and water running down Third. It doesn't look good. When I get a chance I'll call village hall for more info (unless someone else can sooner!).

Information on the water main break is being post on the village website (southrorange.org). Here is the latest update:

August 9, 2006
ALERT! SERIOUS WATERMAIN BREAK ON SOUTH RIDGEWOOD ROAD--SEEK ALTERNATIVE ROUTES--UPDATE TO FOLLOW.........

South Ridgewood Road is closed from Walton to South Orange Avenue. Third Street is closed from Church Street to Ridgewood. Please seek alternate routes.

East Orange Water is currently repairing the break, however due to the seriousness of the damage they expect repairs to take at least a day. According to most recent information, areas worst affected are neighborhoods east of Valley Street. The most common problem at this stage is low water pressure.

The SOFD is bringing in water tanks so that water is on hand in the case of a fire

Mark, was the "reverse 911 system" utilized to inform local residents?

Just heard a news report on Channel 2 by Roz Abrams that said don't drink the water in South Orange because of the water main break. Is the word getting out in the neighborhood on this?

I think this is the ideal situation for using reverse 911. If the argument is that not every citizen is affected, I don't think the unaffected residents will mind (you can give a geographic breakdown of where the water is fine). If I didn't read Maplewoodonline I would not know that I have to boil my water. I think that's an important message that needs to be communicated to the citizens of South Orange!

I called the village administrator and left a message on his voice mail to this effect, as well.

Bets: The village administrator is away this week - I would hope someone is checking his messages and gets back to you. The website will be udated whenever there is new info.
Hlevison, Bets: As for Reverse 911, the village has been waiting for the phone lists from Verizon (and for those who don't have Verizon, there needs to be a method to get those numbers and have them manually input). Calls can be done on a street by steet basis so this could be an effective way to contact people - but unfortunately not yet. At this time, I still have not been told when the problem will be fixed.
I was initially told the water was still safe, but I guess it is better to be safe and boil any water (or to buy bottled water).
If I am given another update, I will post that info.

Didn't I have to provide the water department with my telephone number when I established service? So the wait on Verizon is another excuse by the township government?

If my water pressure is ok & water looks normal should I assume it's OK to shower & cook with it?

When I lived in Hoboken & Brooklyn years ago they seemed pretty good about circulating paper notices...

Elizabeth: The idea is not to input 6000 phone numbers. Verizon provides a recent list which can be downloaded into the software for the reverse 911 system. The list is updated twice a year. It is not an excuse, but the reason why we can't yet fully use this new system. We purchased this system so that we could have another method of communication. It should be fully operational in the near future.
In the meantime, the website will give updates and other methods are still available. However, in this case, we are trying to get information from EOW so we can pass that along to the residents.

I understand, Mark. But this water main break happened (using the first post as a guide) YESTERDAY AFTERNOON and since this is the first I'm hearing that we should be boiling our water, I'm worried about what kind of contaminants we've been ingesting because the administration has bought (and paid for?) a service that should have been used for this very instance and once again there is a passing of the buck. Now, we're "waiting on Verizon". And sure, it would suck to have to call 6000 people, but if the Village Administrator can't buy software that works, perhaps it's time for him to go.

Or return - and get our money back - the software.

Just spoke to East Orange water who told me that if you are getting water , than that water is safe to drink without boiling. Any brown sediment will flush away if you let your water run for a few minutes.

Of course, it you are not getting any water out of your faucets, it doesn't matter if it's safe or not, but those are the residences that would have to boil.

That's what he told me.

No Bajou, we were making a joke. Of course you can't boil water that isn';t there, BUT, if you are getting water they say it is safe and it need not be treated.

Elizabeth: It has nothing to do with the VA and what software he buys. It has to do with Verizon. They are not quite as responsive as one would hope but they control the databases of phone numbers. It is not passing the buck, but passing on the facts. The administration did not state that we could use this yet. A resident asked if we were going to use this and I pointed out we could not do so yet. I could also point out many towns have not even taken the first step of buying a reverse 911 system and some have stated they have no intention of doing so. A reverse 911 system is just one tool for communication, not the only one.

Dave: That could and should be used. Last time I checked about 100 residents had signed up. I should point out the email list is not sorted by area but still could be an effective tool.

Latest update from the village website:
August 9, 2006
ALERT! SERIOUS WATERMAIN BREAK ON SOUTH RIDGEWOOD ROAD--SEEK ALTERNATIVE ROUTES--UPDATE TO FOLLOW.........

South Ridgewood Road is closed from Walton to South Orange Avenue. Third Street is closed from Church Street to Ridgewood. Please seek alternate routes.

East Orange Water Commission states that the water is safe to drink, some areas may have temporary discoloration until the problem is resolved. East Orange Water Commission has not issued a public health advisory regarding boiling of water, but stated you may do so if you so choose. For further information call East Orange Water at 973-266-5219.

East Orange Water is currently repairing the break, however due to the seriousness of the damage they expect repairs to take at least a day. According to most recent information, areas worst affected are neighborhoods east of Valley Street.

WATER WILL BE SHUT DOWN WHILE REPAIRS ARE BEING MADE. This will likely also affect traffic on Valley Street, where the valve is located.

The SOFD is bringing in water tanks so that water is on hand in the case of a fire.

Mark, are you saying we don't even have a list? It was my understanding that we had a list but it was missing numbers. If that is the case then why not use that list since the limitations should be minor. I remembber a presentation at a BOT meeting that claimed we had the reverse 911 installed.

You know this really gets me irate-this happened YESTERDAY and it wasn't until this afternoon that my SUPER of my building leaves me a message that I need to boil my water. It is absolutely unacceptable that it took over a day for this news to reach the residents. Yesterday when my water was cloudy and the water pressure was low I chalked it up to old building/happens occasionally. Now I find out it is due to something that every resident should have been alerted to immediately. Completely unacceptable.

Verizon has allocated all of their available resources to their new statewide video franchise. Don't hold your breath for any quick response to anything that doesn't have anything to do with that.

Is this fixed or not? Water still running brownish but if it is fixed, it would need to run like that for a while to get to clear. However, ifnot fixed, i am just wasting my time & water.
