NOT cheap ($18 for a "Kobe" Burger: a nice 8 oz burger with lettuce, tomato, red onions & seasoned fries on a nice bakery bun, cooked as ordered), and, of course, the place was nearly empty (Save those at the bar enjoying pino gris at $6 or "43" neat at $6.50), so the ample well-intentioned staff was falling all over itself to refill butter cups and water glasses, ask how we were enjoying the crab cakes or blackened salmon (delish), and in general trying to be useful, but mostly standing silently around, up against the walls, looking more like those semi-statues they have as ball-boys&girls at pro tennis matches. The're really trying, folks. Give these kids something to do. Show up and order a steak. We need this place to survive the winter. Give 'em your support. Give 'em a few tries between now and New Years. Give 'em yer $$$, even if it's just a special occasion. -s. BTW: "Lot 15" is the designation # for that particular S.O. municipal parking lot overlooked by the back windows of the Grille, from where you may also view our quaint, scenic, and historic NJ Transit Railroad Station... |

I for one would NOT spend my hard earned money in a place that sells a 'Kobe Burger.' At least it will keep the SHU crowd out! $18 for a burger? What are they nuts? Even Maggie's when it was in the Mall didn't charge that much for their Monster Burger. At those prices it isn't going to last the winter. How about we get a REAL steak place in there!? |

What’s the problem with Kobe Beef? Although I have to admit never trying it, it is supposed to the most delicious of all the beef products on the market. Some of the cows are even massaged! Can you imagine how good that must be? I don't think having an $18 Burger for lunch is a good idea. But if the beef is supposed to be some of the best in the world, you might think about trying it.

Congrats to the owners of Lot 15,who also happen to own the wonderful Cent'anni in Maplewood. Chef Joe has prepared an excellent menu for this new upscale steakhouse..Good luck to them...They have been in the restaurant business for many years .Giacomo and Franco know how to run a great place...a fine addition to the dining scene in S.O. |

Kobe beef:
quote:These cattle are massaged with sake and are fed a daily diet that includes large amounts of beer. This produces meat that is extraordinarily tender, finely marbled, and full-flavored. It is also extremely expensive, often costing more than $100 per pound. Because of the high cost and increasing demand, there are now some Kobe-style beef-cattle being raised in the U.S. using the same techniques.
I'm not sure if "Kobe style" beef has to be from Kobe, though. Probably not. I wonder if we'll one day have "Guinness-style Kobe-style beef": cattle raised on a diet of Guinness...

I have it on good authority that the US raised Kobe style beef drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon instead of Kirin beer. This is the place that moved into the SO Grill/Stuft Shirt locatin? |

Joe: If you're right, I'm wrong. Nora: I miss Don's, too. OK. Back to the food: They have a pretty good steakhouse (dinner) menu, offering several large cuts of beef (I haven't asked if they're all USDA Prime, which I'd expect at these prices), in line with such places as Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. As I mentioned, they also offer fish, pork, veal, and even a pasta dish. The side dishes sound good, too. The bar should be a bit more liberal on the libations, though (Just a good idea for a steak place...). A couple of non-food things need addressing in advance of Lot 15's Grand Opening: *They should consider some acoustic muffling, at least for the window dining area; all that bare wood will create an unpleasant din when the place is even half-full, and even I won't spend all that $$$ if I can't hear table conversation. *There are cosmetic issues, such as a large patch in the ceiling where there was evidently a leak at one time. It's been primed, but needs paint to match the ceiling color. Also, a couple of the stylish wall sconces need new bulbs. -s. BTW, TaylorM: This place isn't Maggie's at the Mall, nor is it meant to attract SHU students. It IS a serious steakhouse. The burger is probably just a carnivorous nod to those with smaller appetites (like me), or those who simply MUST eat with their hands... But since you've obviously neither walked in to try the food, nor even seen a menu, you might be more prudent about offering negative opinions on where you'd spend your money. |

I do not understand the resistance to having SHU students patron local businesses. I lived in the 5 college area in MA for many years as a grad. student and restaurants in downtown Amherst and Northampton were amazing and depended heavily on both locals and students for business. Town-Gown relationships can often be strained but this area is an example of how things can be done right. I think of Northampton's Main Street when looking at SO Ave and think of the potential to completely transform that Ave into a long strip of booming restaurants and stores, given how pedestrian friendly it is. BTW I can't recall seeing a single nail shop in NoHo, just lots of coffee shops, restaurants, new age stores and clothing boutiques. Why cant something similar be recreated here? Anyone else from that area know what I am talking about?

" BTW I can't recall seeing a single nail shop in NoHo" That may be because there's not the slightest market for nail shops in Morthampton, Mantram. |

Dave: Kobe beef comes from a type of cattle called Wagyu. Mantram: Did you ever make it over the the South Ornage Grille for a night when it was open? The drunk obnoxious seton hall student flooding the place made it immpossible to have a good time. Now I'm not saying that all seton hall stundents are evil or anything like that, but that is the kind of business that some people don't need or want. These kids were using fake IDs, starting fights, tearing the place apart, and then jumping in cars and driving home (Also, they usually stopped in the parking lot of destroy some property. ) |

FYI-- The trend in both NYC steakhouses and restaurants is expensive hamburgers made from top quality beef. In NYC-- these dishes go from $25 and up. As for the complaints about Seton Hall students-- get real. South Orange is a college town-- in fact, not enough of a college town. We need to encourage the students to spend MORE money in town. |

Mantram- Nobody objects to SHU students patronizing local businesses; the fact is, they don't and never have in sufficient numbers considering the number of them. The objection is to SHU students patronizing liquor establishments because the majority of them are under the legal age and tend to cause fights, drunk-driving and other quality of life issues. Lot #15 Grille sounds great, but it is upscale and pricy and not for the everyday diner. The name, I believe, refers to the location on local tax maps- The address is 19 Valley, but the site location is lot 15. Best of Luck, Grille- I look forward to stepping in for a thick, juicy! |
