I have heard various rumors that there is a movement to change the name of South Orange to South Mountain. Is this true?

Years ago (at least 5) there was some discussion to rename it SOuth Mountain Village. Haven't heard anything recently though.

Not true and I don't really see why we would.

Many years ago (early 90's), there was discussion of changing the name.
I have always said if we change the name it should be to North Short Hills.

That would definitely help our real estate value instead of having to defend that all of the Oranges aren't slums.

I agree with Neen. To many people think of Orange or East Orange when I mention I grew up in Maplewood - South Orange.

Is there any way to resurrect this effort to change the name?

The movement was a real estate ploy and it met with overwhelming resistance- This is South Orange, N.J. Be proud and tell all- can I get an AMEN?

One of my childhood prayers was in eight grade when my parents were thinking of selling the barn - "South Orange is a wonderful town, hope we don't move" - AMEN!

A few years ago Passaic Township, which is in Morris County, changed its name to Long Hill Township because of possible negative conotations about "Passaic". Has this helped that community?

If SO decides to change its name my suggestion would be West Newark.

sorrryyyy, couldn't resist:-)

I moved from the "top of the hill" in West Orange to South Orange 14 years ago. I do miss West Orange, but I am very happy living here as well. I am a part of JESPY and that's why I moved to SOUTH ORANGE. The main difference that I really like about South Orange compared to West Orange is that I can walk to the train station, walk to a bank, walk to Pathmark, Walk to do some shopping, where I grew up in West Orange, you needed to drive everywhere, unless you lived in the Pleasentdale area or at "the bottom of the hill". I also have all my friends, JESPY & non JESPY friends in town as well.

Let's all work together in changing our town for the better and not trying to whitewash things by suggesting a name change.

How about "Shorter Hills"?

Actually, I am especially enjoying saying I live in South Orange lately rather than Maplewood, the home of "that ridiculous brouhaha about holiday music in the schools."

Does NJ already have a Woodstock? Or would that be more fitting for Maplewood?
