There is nothing wrong with being a part of the "oranges". How about fixing the town so we don't begin to resemble some of our neighbors who share the same name. I'd rather people say, "Oh, you're from South Orange - that's a really nice place..." If we continue the downward decline of our town center, perception will become reality.

I thought the downtown had actually improved with all of the redevelopment of the downtown area. I am new to town, so I am curious if it really is declining? I have heard about the heyday of Grunnings, etc....but wasn't that a good while ago? |

If we define "decline" by complete lack of parking spaces on Friday night because every restuarant in the area was packed, ... wait, what was my point? |

If I remember correctly the woman who was spearheading the 90's name change has since moved.

DeborahG noted that she is "especially enjoying saying I live in South Orange lately rather than Maplewood, the home of 'that ridiculous brouhaha about holiday music in the schools.'" I think any name change should ensure that S.O. does not escape any association with this latest kerfuffle. As it so happens, my suggestion will also give the soon-to-be-former "South Orange" a little more style, panache and prestige. In short, rename yourselves "Upper Maplewood".

Hey, Maplewood evolved from S.O, not the other way around. "Upper Maplewood" would be Millburn. |

Maybe we could keep the name South Orange, and have the other Oranges change their names. |

Upper or Lower Maplewood, North or South Millburn, Long or Short Hills, Coming Soon, NJ or Long Gone, NJ, Woodstock or Rosnerville, anything else but South Orange please. I sympathize with those who grew up here and are attached to the name but, hey, people evolve, towns evolve, and so do their names. South Orange itself has undergone a lot of name changes since it was settled. It's time for another one. Since I came here two years ago I am constantly correcting people that I live in South Orange, not Orange, not West Orange, not East Orange, not the Oranges, not Orangeburg. Please. I can hear the nice people on this thread telling me "move". I will not.

Does anyone know why "Orange?" Is there a history there, or is it just a name? |

William of Orange was co-Regent along with his wife, Queen Mary; Orange refers to the Royal House of The Netherlands (William's native land). Sitoyan- Do you routinely change things because they present minor confusion? Or are you just overly concerned with how you are perceived by others? In any event, this village has been South Orange since 1869 and it has a great history as well as a great present (and presence) with its current name. Not too many others are likely to want a change because of your inability to grasp the concept of towns sharing similar monickers, particularly those with common origins who place a value on that historical identifier. In short, don't move but don't burden the rest of us because you failed to think of this before coming to town. If this load proves too heavy to bear, I suggest you avoid moving anywhere with the following references in their name: Caldwell, Plainfield, Brunswick, Beach, Grove, Valley, Dale, Hampton, San, Maple, Oak, Glen..... |

Brooklyn South would seem to be appropriate based on many of the residents. However, it's ridiculous to even think about changing the name. We all knew the name when we moved here... if name is such a big deal, then pick your real estate closely. Although, I do have to say that I originally didn't want to live in South Orange because, during a stint at Drew University in Madison, I was told to "stay out of all of the Oranges." I wish I hadn't heeded that advice originally. I missed out on so much when I was living in Madison! |

SItoyan, My friend lives in NEW BRUNSWICK, not to be confused with SOUTH BRUSWICK, EAST BRUNSWICK OR NORTH BRUNSWICK, what's wrong with that. I grew up in WEST Orange, lived there for 26 years, and I moved to SOUTH Orange in 1990. I am very proud to be from two of the 4 towns that have ORANGE in there names. I tell people that I live in South Orange, home of Seton Hall University...and when every I say that people then know where I am from. I would be upset, like many other SO. Orange residents if the powers that be changed South Orange's name. |

I forgot to meantion this, West Orange changed from the TOWN OF WEST ORANGE, TO THE TOWNSHIP of WEST ORANGE, and I do remember that a lot of people didn't want the name change, even though the enire name didn't change |
