WOW- Any opinions on the landscape job- I don't recall ever really getting a good look at the house before- it is beautiful-- but I wonder what the noise and privacy factors will be for the owners?

They took down and trimmed many trees. Now you can see what a wonderful house it is! (and I suppose the house gets some light now, too)

(But at the same time, its now awfuly exposed to S Orange Ave behind the house...)

I believe the house had been for sale. So I certainly wish the new owners well. (and isnt' this thread a rather odd way of doing so?!?!?)

Pete

If you look at the style of the house and the way it sits- well- if you use your imagination- I guess it looks like a mushroom. Every since I have lived in the area (30 yrs)- that is what the house was called-- of course
the house on SO Ave next to the grammar school- we used to call White Castle.
I guess I am dating myself

There's a swiss cheese house where Ridgewood Road splits in Millburn.

At a BOT meeting a few weeks ago, a couple of the trustees and the VP were criticizing all the cutting down and trimming of the trees on the mushroom house property. This discussion arose in connection with discussion of the present ordinance which says that a homeowner must obtain permission from the Village to cut down any tree on any property that is more than one-half acre. I guess that the mushroom house property is not more than one-half acre.

There was discussion of applying this ordinance to all properties regardless of size, and providing that for every tree removed on a property (say if a tree is too close to the house) the homeowner must plant another tree somewhere on the property as a replacement.

I'm sure this will involve much discussion before it's passed, if it is. There are pros and cons. However, I do agree that the "mushroom house" does look better after all the tree-cutting and trimming. It really is an asset.

I noticed the house for the first time just last week. What a great house! I'd love to get to see the inside - bet it has (or at least had) some fabulous details.

We call it the Mushroom House too!!! Fabulous job on the tree trimming, I can't wait to see what they do in the Spring.

What a silly ordinance ... we also bought a home with aged out and dead trees. So this ordinance penalizes the homeowners who are caring for their home and property.... kind of sounds like our taxation system...improve your home - pay more taxes!

It is a gorgeous house, and has quite a piece of property (tennis courts, etc.). I heard from an uncle who lived in SO in the 1950s or so that it was the home of the Manichevitz family that makes all of the Jewish holiday treats, matzoh, wine, etc.

I think the Satsky's lived in that house when I was a kid. Ruth Satsky's was a jewelry store in town years ago. The house is gorgeous inside.

Nobody stops you from getting rid of your aged and dead trees. But if you want to keep South Orange as green as the previous residents have made it for you, you owe it to your kids to keep it green for them.

Replacing a tree you cut with another tree is not a taxation, it is your duty.}

Not if you have ll or more 50+ year old trees on a 1/2 acre. 15 if you count the neighbor's tree on the border.
Then there is no light for any other garden. Take my word for it.
