There's talk of snow for Monday into Tuesday. There's a few things S.O. residents should know. 1. Everyone's driveway gets plowed in not just yours. It's inevitable. There's nothing that can be done to prevent it. I've seen some sad attempts though. For instance, there have been snowballs fired at my plow truck, there have been middle fingers directed towards me, I've even seen some idiot in Newstead stand five feet in front of her driveway forcing me to plow around it. That only prompted me to drive by even faster on my next pass and fling snow onto her front porch. 2. When shoveling your driveway, leave the last 3 feet until the plowing is done. This will create a wall of snow blocking more snow from entering your driveway. This way you only have to shovel it once. 3. When using a shovel or snowblower, don't fling it into the street (especially if it has just been plowed) Aim the snow towards your yard. 4. People always seem to forget putting a hat on their snowman or snowwoman so remember a hat. Break an old broomstick in half and find an old pair of gloves. This is more effective for the arms than tree branches. Throw some color in your snowperson. Maybe orange golf balls for the eyes or red coke-bottlecaps for the buttons. Perhaps a string of Christmas lights instead of a scarf could provide some bling-bling. 5. Break out the camera. South Orange can be very picturesque during or after a snowstorm. 6. Remember to lift the shovel with your legs not your back. Only you can prevent forrest fires, I mean, hernias |

Parrot- Loved the recommendations. Here is one more from someone who owns a snowblower, but likes to shovel (most times)! #7- Shovel the road/curb section two feet to the left of your driveway. That way when the plow comes back it mostly avoids dumping on your driveway and having to re-shovel. Thanks for the snowman tips ....we will remember for Tuesday! Keep an eye out for him! |

Heres some you guys missed: PARK ONLY WHERE YOUR SUPPOSED TO..THE TOWN RESTICTS PARKING TO ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE STREET WHEN IT SNOWS FOR THOSE STREETS THAT HAVE PARKING. DIG YOUR CARS OUT ASAP IF ITS ON THE STREET SO THE AREA MAY BE PLOWED OUT BY PUBLIC WORKS TRUCKS. DON'T PARK BLOCKING YOUR SIDEWALK...WHEN I OWNED A HOME WE HAD A SLOPPING DRIVEWAY AND ALWAYS PARKED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL, BLOCKING THE SIDEWALK...ITS AN EXPESIVE TICKET...AND THE TRUCKS WILL BURY YOUR CAR. |

I for one wouldn't complain about the snow removal in South Orange. Public Works does a great job in making sure the streets are safe and are probably going to be working throughout the night. In fact - I hear the plow going by my house right now. I also have noticed that when ever I drive out of south orange - in any direction - that their streets aren't plow as well as ours. |

Parrothead, Thanks for the tips & all the hard work you guys do. Speaking of plowing snow, I assume you guys aren't plowing the street of the "Pulte Pit" in the Quarry, right? Since it's a Private Road (west of Harding Drive), I hope our tax dollars aren't being used to clear that street. Can you confirm? |

MHD, He probably won't be able to confirm for quite awhile, based on the forecast for the storm Historically, the town plows the Village Green condos and the NJ Transit parking lot (though not the sidewalk on Church Street along the lot, which always remains unpassable). I do not know what agreements were forged for this, and do not hold it against the hard workers that keep us safe in winter and blooming in summer. They deserve our thanks and cooperation year round. |

Mrs_weiner, As long as you keep your broomstick and golf balls inside, we won't hold it against you. |

Bets, I definitely do not hold it against the workers, if this is the case. However, I would expect an explanation from our town politicans on why our tax dollars are spent on private property. The DPW doesn't plow my driveway...I wouldn't expect them to plow any other private property. |

MHD - You're more familiar with the Pulte situation than I am, particularly regarding the private road aspect. But the homeowners do pay a hell of a lot in taxes - shouldn't they be entitled to have their road plowed? I don't know what the situation is. Was this ever discussed? |

Nice, helpful posts. Remember when you shovel snow, don't lift it. Part of the word "shovel" is "shove," so move it, push it to where you want it out of the way. Don't lift it---avoid a heart attack. Take a breather every five minutes. Dress warmly enough. Sweating a bit is better than feeling your muscles stiffen because you don't have enough clothes on and you're cold. Most of all, tomorrow, when it's all white and quiet, early in the South Orange morning, as you begin to shovel, listen, look, and enjoy it. |

doublea, As I recall, since the road in the "Pulte Pit" is private it would not be maintained by Village services (plowing, paving etc). Yes, the residents do pay a huge association fee (around $500 monthly), but that does not go to the Village. It is is supposed to pay for private plowing. Perhaps Mark or Parrothead can confirm that our taxes are not being used for maintenance of Private property. |

MHD - But my point is it's not just "our" taxes. Each homeowner is paying over $25,000 a year in taxes - a lot more than a lot of homeowners with houses of similar values. I don't know what the situation is, but it just seems that they're entitled to have the street plowed. The houses that have been sold are now owned by S.O. taxpayers just like you and me, and they pay paxes like everyone else in town - in fact, they pay the highest taxes in town for the most part. |

Doublea, They do pay taxes, however the developer explicitly wanted the road to be Private to keep people like you & I off of that road. If the road is PRIVATE (just like my driveway) and the developer can restrict who can go there (just like my driveway), why should the town service the road? The road is in essence "Pulte's driveway". If the town were to service that private road, the town should service everyone's driveway. |

As much as I was against the development, it's time to let it go. I'd rather the town plow the streets to make sure nobody gets hurt since the streets are on such steep hills. If Pulte needs to correct this going forward, than the village needs to work with them. |
