Looks like one of our local residents (whom I shall not "out") wanted to prod them into getting their site up. I wonder if red_alert is a pseudonym for that resident, since they usually post under another name.

Village Independents' home page states: "The Village is governed by a President (Mayor) and six person council (Trustees)..."

Excuse me, but the village president is NOT equivalent to a mayor, and the village does not have a council. As per its 1872 Charter, revised in 1978:

Article II THE GOVERNING BODY, 2.7 Procedures
(c) Village President; Presiding Officer. The Village President shall preside over meetings of the Board of Trustees and may participate in discussions at all meetings of the Board, but shall have no vote except as provided in Article III.

Article III ORDINANCES AND RESOLUTIONS, 3.3 Vote Required.
(a) No ordinance may be enacted without at least the affirmative vote of four Trustees, or the affirmative vote of three Trustees and the Village President.
(b) No resolution may be adopted without the affirmative vote of a majority of the Trustees present and voting. The Village President may cast the deciding vote in the case of a tie vote.

This is a long way from a mayoral form of municipal government. Either pre-campaign civics lessons from their campaign manager and major duomo have confused these candidates into thinking the village has a mayor and council, or they assume voters don't know the difference.

Rastro,
I am intrigued that you are trying to figure me out.

To clean the slate, my earlier comments regarding the websites and voter registration information was not to prod or help the Village Independents out.

If you look at my track record on the board, my stance has been neutral but have been known to post questions or identify potential issues for the candidates to respond. This would help all of us as voters to make the most educated decision on May 10th.

The Village Independents should have had their site up weeks ago to communicate their mission; especially if they are handing out literature to the voters directing us to the site.

It is a sign of mismanagement if they need proding to do something as simple as putting up a website after they advertise it. Everyone knows "Coming Soon" is unacceptable in South Orange.

If I was a "secret" support entity for Line C and if they are elected, I will not have time to keep after them during their tenure.

Thanks,
Red Alert

Maybe "Rastro" should be renamed "Scooby-Doo" for his limited sleuthing skills.

MHD, I'm a fan of both cartoon canines, so feel free, if that floats your boat. My "sleuthing skills" as you call them consisted of seeing who registered the domain villageindependents.org, then seeing who was pointing people to it, rather than the actual web site for the slate. It doesn't seem to me to be much of a leap to assume the person hyping the site is the one who registered it. And given that you are posting within minutes of red_alert, perhaps it's not so far fetched.

red_alert, I never suggested you were helping them. I simply said you were prodding them. I doubt a cow hit with a cattle prod thinks they're being helped. As for figuring you out, I have no intention of trying. I simply did a whois on the domain, and found it was a name I knew from here.

I haven't seen any flyers. Are you saying that the Village Independents have www.villageindependents.org on their literature?

The literature I was speaking of came from the debates. It had villageindependents.org on it.

That's what made things confusing.

Scooby-Doo (I like the new icon),

1) I am not red-alert & have no idea who red-alert is (although I will admit I have enjoyed their posts, so far)

2) You will see that Villageindependents.org is now registered to the same person as the .com since ownership has been sold. The point was not to prod them to put up a site, but rather to show that those people don't have the foresight for something as simple as properly purchasing a website before printing it on brochures - how can they be expected to have the foresight to run a town?

If they do get elected, let's hope they are more fiscally responsible with taxpayer's money than they have been with their contributor's money.

Well said MHD.

And to reiterate, I am not MHD. From reading his/her historical posts, I take that as a compliment.

Your number 2) item was the point I was trying to get across originally.
1-If they have trouble managing their campaign, what example are they setting if they are elected?

2-Terriann mentioned in the first (Beth El) debate that she left "it's about results" line because of lack of management. As we can see the problem for Howard and Eric has been resolved. They, with John, are managing their campaign very well with the South OrangeADE push.

Hello,

My name is Paul Salvatoriello and, as you know, I am running for South Orange Trustee with the Village Independents ticket. I would like to officially introduce myself to the MOL community and encourage you to visit the Village Independents website www.villageindependents.org (.com works as well) and my own website www.votepaul2005.com for information about our campaign.

There have been many many comments made about the Village Independents ticket on this forum, and I hope that you will keep an open mind and make sure that you reach out to me and the ticket to get your questions answered before you believe information discussed here that may or may not be true.

As an example, with regard to the website, I have no qualms stating that a mistake was made with the website. I, like some of you, was upset that flyers were being distributed with a web address that did not yet work. That is not an indication of how I conduct myself, or my work, and so I was well aware that it reflected badly on the campaign. I would like to assure you that such a snafu is not an indication of how I would conduct myself as a Trustee. Fortunately, the site is now up and you can learn about our campaign platform.

So, hello to you at MOL, and I would like to have the opportunity to respond to your questions. I will try my best to stay current on this site, but I encourage you to use my website or the ticket website to funnel questions to me and I will respond to you as quickly as I can.

Good Luck!

Paul,
Glad to see you on the board and participating.

Your site looks great. Very professional and well done.

Couple questions.
1. Are you still aligned with Terriann and Stacey?
2. Are they making their own websites?

My impression is that you are distancing yourself from your ticket-mates.

You make no mention of your association with Line C, Terri-ann and Stacey, or even link to the VillageIndependent.com website. You are also soliciting contributions for your own campaign. Are any of these funds going to your ticket-mates or should potential donations go to the other site? How does it work?

Could you help clarify this.

Again, welcome to the board. I look forward to having an open dialogue with you in the coming weeks.

Hi Paul, and welcome to MOL. South Orange Specific is just one tiny facet of the website, so I hope you peruse some of the other places, like Virtual Cafe, to get a taste of some of the more enjoyable posts.

But, I do have a question for you. What is your voting record in past elections? National, state, and local (including BOE)?

Paul,

Welcome to MOL.

I have a few questions:

Who is your campaign manager?
Why are you called "village independents"? Are you claiming to be "independent" from the current administration?
Can you share how many BOT Meetings you have been to in the past year?
What is your opinion of the Trustees plan to pay and provide. Pensions to Trustees? What is your opinion of the reallocation of John Gross' contract?
.

I am also curious who the campaign managers are for all of the candidates. Can each candidate provide this info? Do any of the campaign managers post online under alias user names?

Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your welcome. I am happy to be able to talk with you, and if elected Trustee, I plan to take a page from M. Rosner and make sure I have a blog available on the net to keep the dialogue going. It is a pleasure to answer your questions. Thanks for asking them.

I am still aligned with Teriann and Stacey and I am very much a part of the Village Independents team. I am not distancing myself in the least. We each have our own websites in addition to the team site just so we can expand our outreach and emphasize each other's individual strengths, though we all share an overall vision for South Orange as we move forward.

My website was first created before I joined the team, so I'm updating it as we speak to make sure it links to www.villageindependents.org and emphasizes Line C.

About donations, I provided the ability to donate to my campaign in case people did not feel comfortable donating to the team because they did not know Teriann or Stacey. However, if that is not an issue, I would urge people to donate to the entire ticket.

With regard to my voting record, I have voted in all of the November elections. I could not vote in the May 2001 elections because I was still in law school in D.C. and not yet a resident of S.O. I chose not to vote in the May 2003 election because I felt that I did not know enough about the candidates and the issues at that time to make a truly informed choice. Accordingly, I have spent the last two years doing my homework about the Village. I also just voted in the BOE elections two days ago.

Because I have worked so hard to get to know the issues currently facing S.O. and have talked with a lot of residents and business owners of the Village, I hope you won't hold my missing the May 2003 elections against me too much.

The campaign manager for the Village Independents ticket is David Bressen, and my personal campaign manager is Jim Prusinowski.

We call ourselves the Village Independents because, though we truly are on the same page about the major issues (revitalizing the downtown, stabilizing taxes, and transparency in government), we also feel that we have independent perspectives and are not afraid to voice our own ideas.

Are we claiming to be "independent" of the current administration? Absolutely. I got into this race because I was tired of the Coming Soon signs (like a lot of people in this forum), and there is no question that I will do what I think is right as a Trustee, without fear that it does not comport with the current Trustees' view. Given a lot of things that have been said in this forum about the ticket, I hope that when you meet me you will know that I am no one's lackey.

I have personally been to about 5 BOT meetings in the last year (which I know is not a lot) but I also have watched many more on TV.

With regard to certain Trustee decisions recently made, I would like to begin with the caveat that I do not have all the information that was in front of the BOT at the time those decisions were made. That said, based on what I know at this point in time, I do not think that a Trustee seat should be a paid or "pensioned" position, so I would not support the initiative once the State has had the opportunity to look at the current proposal, and I did not agree with the realloation of Mr. Gross' contract. I did not see any imminent reason for such a decision. At the least, the manner in which the reallocation was decided seemed to me to be in haste and without sufficient input from Village citizens.

I think that covers it for now, and although I am not able to check MOL as often as I would like, I hope to continue the dialogue. Thank you again for your questions, your interest, and your welcoming words. I hope I get to meet some of you in person, if I have not already. Take care.

Paul

Paul,

Thank you for your timely and thorough responses.

A few follow-up questions:
1) If you are "absolutely" independent from the current Administration, why do you have the same Campaign Manager that many of the current Trustees have had? Why does your campaign brochure utilize the identical template of Trustees Rosen, Rosner, Taylor, Theroux and Steglitz?

2) If you do not think a Trustee seat should be paid on pensioned, will you accept the compensation, should the proposal be passed by the state and the Voters?

3) If you do not agree with the reallocation of Mr. Gross' contract what would you propose to do about it if you are elected?

I'd also be interested how ALL candidates would respond to the last 2 questions.

Thanks.

Paul,

While I appreciate your enthusiastic attention to some of the major issues at hand, I have one problem with your post #2 above.

quote:

I chose not to vote in the May 2003 election because I felt that I did not know enough about the candidates and the issues at that time to make a truly informed choice.

Didn't you state during the BethEl debate that you were actively seeking petition signatures to RUN for the BOT in the last election? How is that possible if you weren't aware of the "issues"?

It's also eerily reminiscent of Mark's abstention on the Gross contract in May 2004 - he said he didn't have enough information to feel comfortable voting. Sorry, Mark, as I've said before I admire you for proactively participating on MOL, but that was a sorry excuse for an abstention. How about "tabling the vote until I can educate myself?" I seem to remember a privateline from you that said the minutes from the meeting you missed were woefully inadequate. If you need refreshment on this, just let me know. I save everything.

So, Paul, why the comment that you attempted to run in May 2003 yet were too uninformed to vote?
