I made my last and final visit to the GLB tonight. The place is awful. Each time I go there, the service gets worse. And it’s not just the hired help, it’s the owners/managers. Upon telling two different owners that the service has been consistently terrible and that I wouldn’t be coming back, I got little more than a shoulder shrug. I decided to leave and go to St. James Gate – the food and service was very good. I dine out with my family about 4/5 nights a week. According to my Amex annual statement, I spent about $13,000 on restaurants last year. I have a hard time understanding how a business owner lets a customer like me walk out the door and head to the competition without caring. Has anyone else had similar experiences at this place? Am I crazy? |

jrg, Search the archives under "Food, Wine, Dining & Travel". There are DOZENS of similar complaints...usually when people were accompanied by children. Did you happen to have kids with you tonight?

If I ever went back to that place I would have to have mental problems, no taste buds,a chip on my shoulder, love to be insulted, enjoy being ignored, want to spend 3 hours in that hole in the wall for a snack, all while wearing my new thong bathing suit........Just to get even |

Ahhh the age-old Gaslight bashing. Yes, the beer is disgusting and practically undrinkable (IMHO), but the food is quite good. The table service has never been a problem for me. The bartending service has improved greatly over the past year or so... I actually stopped in there late night last Saturday when I got off a Hoboken train and though the crowd wasn't really my scene, the staff was very friendly. I stayed for a drink and some small talk and left feeling good about Gaslight. That's just my 2 cents. |

Rod, The owners really seem to love the little ones. Some people prefer to get their kids sugared-up and sleep-deprived and then go out for a "fun" night at the Gaslight. |

We did have kids with us. I left that part out (trying to be brief)... When we walked in the back door and asked if we could sit down, the waitress said she needed to check with the manager first, since he doesn't like kids in the dinning room. I suppose he prefers them at the bar? Thanks for the feedback. I didn't see the "food, wine..." page until after I posted here. |

I stop in the Gaslight every other week or so for take out. I order, have a beer, get my food, and go on my way. I have no problems with the place in that regard. I've had good conversations with the bar staff and other customers, and there's ample parking out back. Not a big fan of their beer, but when in Rome ... I would not go there with my family. It's just not a good kids scene. Yes, we did it once (and the owner stopped by at our table and gave us coupons for the circus), but it's just not comfortable to take young kids (and ours never get up from their seats, are quite and well behaved). Plus, it can get very smokey in there. |

MHD, When I took my kids there I kept them in a cage. With a bowl of candy corn and a bowl of water. Boy can they rattle that cage.........The owners really loved that. When I let them out to stretch thier legs they started poking the fish and feeding them fries. The last straw was when they started to play with darts and took aim at the owners keester,I had no idea they were such good shots. All this before our food arrived. |

The other night I went there and was knocked over by the female owner as she waddled (seemingly)straight into me. My friend ordered one of gaslight's own microbrews and 5 minutes, 2 waiters, both owners and a bartender later - it was finally confirmed that they knew the beer in question (right off the menu) and if they actually carried it at all or had it in stock. Bunch of idiots over there, none of the wait staff seem to know the menu correctly. and whats going on with no free refills?? |

Although we have never had any terrible experiences there, I find the wait staff to be terribly unattentive and generally don't return to your table to ask how things are until you've already finished your meal. |

With all of the empty store fronts in SO and the Stuft Shirt location that never seems to stay open for long - hoping I don't jinx the current proprietor - why is the Gaslight able to stay in business???? The food, beer, and service are seriously lacking, but always seems to draw a crowd. Why is the bar set so high for other business, yet so low for this establishment? The Gaslight reminds me of how Kris Kristofferson once described Johnny Cash - a walking contradiction - but it was meant as a compliment to JC. |

While I agree that their beers are not among the best I have tried... I have gone to gaslight for years and never had bad service or a bad meal. I even get greated by my name and have my 'usual' brought over without asking. |

Resident, you have never had bad service at the Gaslight? Wow, either you are very lucky, or you are lying. The food is pretty good there, but the service is awful. This is probably the only place that I have entered that the staff really tries hard to not make you feel welcome. They just don't care if they get your business or not. So, I no longer go there anymore. |

We also never go anymore. We used to get take-out from the Gaslight at least once a week - the food is pretty good. My husband would have a beer at the bar while waiting. He got to know the owners fairly well and considered himself a "regular". One Sun. afternoon we stopped in for an early dinner with our kids. Hubby had a baseball hat on (bad hair day). The waiter refused to serve us unless hubby removed his hat - gentlemen are expected to remove their hats in the "restaurant" section (who are they kidding - it's a brew-pub/sports bar for crying out loud)! My husband spoke to the owner (Cindy's husband - forgot his name) and asked if they wanted to lose us as a customer over a hat (a woman eating next to us in the restaurant was wearing a hat without harrassment, btw). He said he either had to remove the hat or move into the bar - kids or no kids. We've never been back. We're just not up to their high standards. |

The owner of the Gaslight seems as if it is a privilege to eat at his establishment. The food is overpriced and the beer is average at best. The owner of a town restaurant is supposed to be inviting which creates frequent business. This does not happen and everyone wonders why so few restaurants thrive in South Orange. |
