Hi Everyone,

My name is Jennifer Lackie and I am the finance director of the Village Liaison Committee. Although I only registered on MOL, I have been reading it for a while now.

A reoccuring sentiment I have felt is one that Seton Hall, because it is a gated community, is closed off to the rest of South Orange. As a student, I know that this is simply not correct.

Here I will post upcoming Seton Hall events that are open for residents of the Village to attend. I hightly encourage you all to come on to our campus - be it for an event or not! Furthermore, if you are interested, feel free to email me at lackieje@shu.edu, and perhaps I or anything member of the Village Liaison Committee could meet up with you, direct you around campus, and perhaps even attend the event together!

As you are aware, the spring semester is ending soon. (My last classes for the year are tommorow, save finals!) As a result, there is a very limited selection of offerings. I will continue to post here over the summer and into the next academic year so that all residents have the oppportunity to come on to campus.

Parking on campus is at a premium, but depending on the time you come to visit, you will be able to find a spot. Parking spots are most difficult to find around lunch time, so do keep that in mind. When you come on to campus in your car, ask the security guard for a guest pass. You can also ask the security guard for directions to a parking lot, although personally, I would suggest utilizing the parking garage. As you travel down Seton Hall's main road, it will be on the left if you are coming from the South Orange Ave main gate or on the right if you are coming from the Ward Gate. Also, keep in mind the Ward Gate is not open all the time. When I find out its exact hours, I will certainly post them here.

I'm not the best at giving directions, so if this is confusing please let me know and I'll do what I can to clarify the situation.

I look forward to seeing you all on campus and please don't hesitate to send me an email before you come if you so desire. I would be more than happy to show you around!

Jennifer: Welcome to MOL! This is exactly the sort of positive SHU input that will help to bring the Village into the Campus. I'll look forward to being kept up to date. Thank you.

-s.

BTW: Perhaps you could also contact Dave or Jamie about regularly posting SHU events on the main MOL home page, so they can be seen by those who don't visit this board.

I know this would be a big step from posting it here on MOL, but maybe these events could be posted regularly on the town website, or have a village residents section on SHU website?

Or in the newsrecord for those who aren't on the web yet?

We will look into the newsrecord too!

Hi everyone!

I made a mistake - my apologies.

The Black Holocaust and Reparations lecture will take place on Thursday, April 28th. Not tonight as I originally posted!

Time and place remain the same.

Sorry for the inconvience this may have caused!

Another idea. Work with SHU's office of community relations (or public relations, or whatever it's called there) to create an e-mail mailing list that local residents can subscribe to for regular notices of upcoming events.

(South Orange village government should do the same thing, but that's another story.)

Welcome Jennifer. Thanks for posting events happening at SHU. Is there an official website that clearly lists all events in a given week?

It's nice that such info has been posted. I periodically check their site for events, but it's not such a direct and easy task. Jennifer, it's a great service you're providing, but not your job to be the PR for the school. They should really be doing this if they want to bridge the gap between the village and university.

What about posting events on Maplewood Online's home page where other events are listed?

composerjohn - First off, I love your name, are you involved with music? I play the trumpet and worked at the Boston Symphony Orchestra as a Music Librarian last summer!

To answer your question: No, not really. The best website I would suggest is http://events.shu.edu/ It gives a good listing of events, however, not everything is posted there, and as you can see, it hasn't been updated for a while. As a student, I recieve dozens of emails a week advertising various events that are not necessarily advertised online.

gozerbrown- Haha, perhaps they should hire me to be the PR for the school! I am a broke college student, so it would certainly help! Seriously though, the feedback I have been getting for posting events here has been so rewarding and until an easy, comprehensive way for South Orange residents to find out about events at Seton Hall, I will continue to post here. It's fun too!

Also, severals users on MOL have contacted me regarding various other ways to advertise these events and as soon as I get a chance (I'm so busy with finals right now), I will look into those options!

Keep the advice coming everyone! Email me at lackieje@shu.edu if you have anything to share!

Thanks Jennifer. It's too bad the events page is not updated and better organized. A clear listing of the weekly events open to the public (with links) would be great.

Yes, I am very involved in music. In fact, that's what I do for a living. I compose music for film/tv and the concert stage (orchestra concerts, etc.). I am currently finishing up my doctorate at Juilliard. My music has been performed throughout the world, including major orchestral premieres in Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in NYC. It is a difficult way to make a living (especially in this area!), but at least it is never boring!

composerjohn - Wow, thats incredible! Good luck with all your future endeavors. Perhaps there is some way to connect Seton Hall and South Orange through music... I'll think about it this summer, but I'd live to hear anyone's input on this!

One of the hopes of the Village Liaison Committeee is to get a website up and running soon (haha, by soon I really mean eventually). Thus far, this has proved rather difficult as no one in the group really has any idea how to make a website. It is something we are working on though. One of the links we would put on this website would be calendar postings of all open SHU events. As we've been so busy lately, the idea of a website for the VLC has been put on the back burner, but hopefully over the summer and in the fall of next year we can get something decent up and running!

Thanks for everyone's emails! Keep them coming! lackieje@shu.edu

Maybe Dave can create a Topic for SHU on MOL? That way you could post SHU events there? That way they could be found easily.

My nephews go to a lot of the Prep Football and Hockey games. They sometims watch the Prep basketball too. One of their friend's brother's will be going to The Hall for College next year, so they'll be going to some of his games.
