I don't understand how a town with high real estate prices, a predominantly professional community, well kept homes and parks, and crazily high property taxes seems on the verge of becoming Newark?

This is my new favorite post.

I'm going to go out a limb and guess you've never actually been to Newark.

I didn't mean literally based on what I see, but rather the way the town is discussed on this site. I feel like this site makes it seem like we are just one small step away...and not only geographically.

I love South Orange. My wife and I paid a fortune to move here, but have never regretted it. The people are friendly, the town is beautiful and the homes/streets have real character. There are a half dozen restaurants "downtown" that we love and frequent (and can walk to if we want to), any number of dry cleaners, two excellent bagel shops, an extensive drug store, a locksmith who has twice gotten me out of a jam and a place to get my hair cut. In fact, as I type all that, i realize I could be talking about our old home (in Park Slope, Brooklyn). And again, these are just the places we stroll to on warm evenings. There are many other choices within a 6-minute drive.

Do I want "more" downtown? Of course. I'm the kind of person who always wants more, and we have a lot of choice real estate sitting unused. But Newark we ain't, nor will we ever be. There are folks lined up 12 deep to pay you too much for your house should you decide to leave our decaying town.

Monty,

Accepting mediocrity and over 7 years of "Coming Soon" rhetoric as acceptable only encourages that behavior to continue.

Candle shop, bakery, comic book store, gas station, 2 ice cream stores, movie rentals, starbucks, shoe repair, sporting goods, nice restaurants, tailors and banks!
Oh what are we missing????? A movie theater with five screens that is going to jam up the town with cars and more trash on the ground that currenty the town can not keep up with and a supermarket that is going to cause even a bigger traffic jam.

Warning - Big thread drift ahead. One of the best things that could happen to South Orange is to get rid of that clown Sharpe James and the other clowns on the Newark Council.

The Newark City Council is the highest paid in the country, and they still have a zillion other paying positions and organizations.

I'm sure there are some lurkers on MOL who are much more familiar with Newark politics than I am. I hope that Sharpe doesn't play the race card again in 2006 and say he's "blacker" than Cory. Or if he does, Newarkers won't fall for it again.

And Ron Rice jr. (not his father) would be a big asset to Newark.

Most Newarkers feel that the "barburbians" don't won't Newark to succeed. They can't believe that a lot of barburbians really would like to see Newark do well (even if it's strictly for economic reasons).

I'm continually amazed that South Orange has done so well given its proximity to Newark. I guess we can thank the Midtown Direct for that. South Orange always had a beautiful housing stock, but until the Midtown Direct it was really going downhill.

End of drift.

The only time south orange resembles newark is when certain newark residents come to ward place and the SHU area to rob us!

Personally, I could do with or without it. Just do SOMETHING upscale to attract people to the town. If that can't happen....pave it & stripe it.

Although red_alert really made me laugh we need a more prentious name in order to seperate us from the NEW ARK of the convenant. How about the Woods of South Orange? South Maple Village?
Something that sounds like a golf course or a new development with a vaguely spanish or native america n name. Rancho del arbol sur?
Maybe we could hire a profesional marketing firm to come up with a new name? We can't leave everything up to amatuers.

South Orange is a nice place to live, raise kids, and enjoy life. That doesn't mean that there isn't room for improvement.

And Furthur, if Newstead decides it wants its own fukcing name and wants to separate, let it take the path of Short Hills exclusivity. You WILL be answerable to South Orange, as you owe South Orange your very existence, like a suckling pig on the tit of a fostering goat.

Get OVER YOURSELVES.

And move on . org.

SOUTH ORANGE FOREVER!
