ril - your original post states: " I left at that point, and the shouting and sirens began soon after, and continued for several hours. " No mention of shouting or sirens has been made since. Also, it doesn't seem like the "event" occured for several hours... was this an exaggeration? Trolling? |

I live across from the park. I could hear the shouting and the sirens. While the actual prom-goers may have left earlier, numerous people remained until dusk. When I went for a walk in the park this morning, I brought along a trash bag and filled it with garbage left from the event. I am certainly not lying or trolling. Just a concerned resident who's never seen this event before. |

It did go on for hours, and the police were on Grove Rd, not on Park Place. There were horns honking, yes..sirens, cars double parked and my driveway blocked. We who live ON the park put up with qiute a lot, and we're not on MOL complaining about it all of the time. As a matter fo fact, this is the first I've seen. If this is an annual event, why isn't it planned??? And people do treat these streets on the park as a freeway. |

I've lived here for more than 6 years. Apparently, I just wasn't at home for the annual pre-prom picture taking. |

"...treat these streets on the park as a freeway." Wow. Freeways usually have speed limits of 55, 65 or even 70 mph. Think about that statement. What about July 4th celebrations in local parks. Yes there is a lot of traffic. I got into a lot of traffic just getting there. I even had to park 4 blocks away. Too bad. That is what it takes to get people together to have a good time. What about neighborhoods around stadiums, arenas? What about parades, marathons? Get with it fellow citizens. Complain about things that are bad and not about good happenings. |

Yeah, 55mph or better. Come sit on my steps with a radar gun any time. With the park full of children. |

Arizona- Aren't you being a little free with the peace and safety in someone else's neighborhood? Just as you get to complain about speeding on West South Orange Avenue and trucks driving over Mayhew Drive, people in the area of Grove Park should be able to expect to go about their daily routine without pedestrians clogging up THEIR street. Be a little circumspect. |

...a notable difference -- graduation, prom is once a year, a couple of hours max. speeding, double parking, and construction issues are ongoing. sure seems like more police should have been out, knowing this is an annual event (ala the county cops closing at the reservation) but then it appears to be very adhoc, without any formal planning... /p

BW: I doubt anyone was speeding around Grove Park last night ... it was too crowded. Dump trucks on local streets (day in and day out) damage the street, disturb the peace, and present a danger. Apples and oranges. I doubt that the daily routine is compromised. One day a year is not daily. |

It's also your kids- not theirs. Apples and oranges as well. Their neighborhood, their peace. Your neighborhood, your peace. |

I was backed up in traffic on S.O. Ave but let me say I was thrilled to see the event. Prom night is such a fun night for students and everyone needs to do what they can to make the best of it. Has anyone from that immediate area contacted the principal or anyone else to address their concern? Maybe next year it will be better planned. |

Look, I'm not complaining about the event, it's the way the event is/is not handled. This can't be an ad hoc thing, last year they had a balloon arch, paths and stuff set up. It's absurd that the police don't do a better job with the traffic. There were cars parked on the grass of the park and double parked. People yelling and honking horns because of the mess...for hours. And yes, speeding is a problem on my street, Park Place. And there are lots of kids around, from all over. I've been passed because I wasn't going fast enough the 1/2 block to SO Ave from my driveway. Generally, the park is a very nice place, with all of the problems that come along with it, which I could elaborate but won't. People enjoy it and have fun, the sound of children laughing and playing is very nice, the trash left behind isn't. |

Since this likely is not an official school event, any more than a pre-prom gathering on your lawn, maybe the SO Police Department should circle its calendar for this event for next June. |

Arizona- the kids were in the street. I suppose when all the people on the "upper west side" complained about all partygoers who flooded their neighborhoods for "GreekFest" a few years back, we should have all just lauded their "joie de vive" and said "oh well, it's only once a year". All anybody said was that an advance call to the police would have averted some of the chaos and enhanced this event for all. But again, it's only a problem if it happens on your block; hypocrisy of the highest order... |

Its not the event...its how it unfolds...How come when lareg events occure then the police only allow parking on one side of the street? TO KEEP TWO WAY TRAFFIC FLOWING. Obviously when you attend large events in this town...parking is allowed anywhere, on the park, blocking resident's driveways, on corners, at NO PARKING AREAS...etc. The event is a wonderful thing, its how it unfolds and isn't cooridinated properly or respectfully like other events that occure in the park. |

By the way, just for the record, this was not an authorized event. It seems to have become a tradition for the kids and parents to go to the park to meet and take pictures. When it starts to get a little crazy, the police come by and try to restore order. For the most part it lasts about an hour. And yes, the police could find out the date of next years' prom and circle the calendar so we can be pro-active. Clearly this year created more traffic (and complaints) than in the past. |
