it's sad that my charges and i can not go into town around 2-4pm..the kids that get out of school and walk home take up the sidewalks..knock you over(doesn't matter what age you are) and take over the playground...silly me i thought school was out already..and my charges and i went to the playground..no big kids in sight.(yea) we were there about 10 mins when all the other parents and nannies started leaving all at once...then i noticed these huge kids came in and starting screeming and running around like they were gonna fight eachother...then one said to my 4year old..."this is my playground now! get the bleep out" and started walking up to her ...i freaked out grabbed my kids and left! i'm so tired of this ..is there anything that we can do to stop this?? |

I had virtually the same experience at the Memorial Park playground earlier today. Could be I'm mistaken, but I always thought that playground was made for kids 5 or 6 and under. Anyway, I was there with my three, the youngest of which is 22 months, and suddenly this HUGE group of older kids descends on the playground. They were with a couple of adults (one of which was referred to as Miss Brianna) but were completely out of control and unsupervised. I recognized only one of the kids, who will be going in to first grade next year. There were others his size, but there were also much bigger kids who looked to be in their early teens. They were running like crazy all over the playground and the equipment, and I was very afraid for my baby, that he might get knocked over and/or trampled. I stayed very close to him at yelled at one bunch of boys who were running on the baby equipment. Meanwhile, Miss Brianna, who seemed to be ultimately in charge, completely ignored the inappropriate behavior and sat chatting with a friend the entire time. Who are these kids? Aren't they a little too old to be descending, en masse, on a playground meant for little ones? Shouldn't the folks in charge of these kids have given them specific instructions about appropriate behavior around small children, and disciplined them when they got out of control. Just about every other mother of small children left shortly after these kids arrived. I had only just arrived at the playground myself, and wasn't going to allow these kids and they're horrific behavior force me to leave. SONanny, if anyone had said to my kid what was said to the 4-year-old you care for, they would have gotten an earful from me! |

Pick up your cell phone and call the police. They'll send someone over and that will usually curtail the situation. |

SONanny - About what age were these kids? Were they middle schoolers? The reason I'm asking is that about a week ago I was in the Village in the morning before school started. A group of about 8-10 SOMSchoolers were going crazy on their bikes. They were riding on the wrong side of South Orange Ave., going right through red lights, then on the sidewalks without regard to pedestrians or anything else. It was really dangerous. Several people just stood there and shook their heads. I happened to see a SO cop and told him and he took off to the middle school. |

I don't think you need any age rules. Rules on disorderly conduct should suffice. Imagine how unfair rules based on age would be! |

Similar situations occur on the sidewalk areas in front of starbucks/cold stone/blue moon diner... after school, there are many groups of young kids unsupervised and acting out of control- no parents or guardians in sight- riding bikes, running around and being loud. Its annoying!! |

I agree that the above situation is awful, and my two-year-old has gotten knocked down a couple times by overzealous middleschoolers in the Mem Park playground. But in general I find the ones that hang out at the train station to be nice (if loud) kids. (at least when we're picking up Daddy at 6pm.) |

Amie, I didnt mean to imply the kids near the train station were causing trouble, per-say, but just wondering where the parents are while their kids loiter for extended periods of time. |

Just to be clear about the kids riding their bikes- a car making a left turn off South Orange Ave. onto Vose almost hit kids riding their bikes heading east on the westbound lane of South Orange Ave. I was headed to the post office. On my way back, stopped at Vose and South Orange Ave., the same kids came by on the sidewalk and then turned around and rode down the middle of South Orange Ave. And I thought there was a helmet law - no helmets. It was sheer luck that nobody was injured or worse. |

its okay when crazy white kids assemble with no purpose, yet when groups of black kids assemble in public meeting places with good reason- its a problem! anything wrong there? |

Spitz I see that group of kids on bikes every morning. And you are right, they are out of control! Did you notice with the exception of one, none of them wear helmets? And there's a helmet law in South Orange! I've also noticed many of them ride more then one to a bike - another "no, no..." They all hang out on South Orange Ave; by the brook, until at least 8:05, when I'm leaving. |
