I know that this is a difficult situation, but what do new homeowners do if they are 1 mile or more from the train station and not near the Jitney lines? We looked at a house on Mayhew Court, but not sure how we would deal with getting to/from the train station. |

because of the long waiting line on parking in the lot, your only choices right now are jitney or walking to the south orange station. the other idea i would recommend is looking into the parking in mountainside and highland ave stations. they are not very far and from the looks of it, they have more empty lots. |

As far as I know, the jitney does not go to areas above Wyoming. For the life of me, I can't understand why. I started a thread on this very topic. See "What's Up with the Jitney?". |

Sully, I noticed tonight the Jitney that runs along Wyoming in Maplewood. Perhaps, you could park along Wyoming (or walk) and take the jitney to Maplewood. P.S. It's a real nice street. We have had a block party for the past 4 years each Summer/Fall, although it may not happen this year because one of the people who helps run it is moving. Are you talking about that house at the end of the block that was completely renovated inside? Interesting house. |

yep, that's the house. Was it a disaster before they renovated? I'm thinking they bought low to sell high. Why else would you renovate and leave? That's probably a good career if you have $$ to invest |

Sully, I never saw the inside of the renovation, so I can't say. However, I'm pretty sure it was bought by someone as an investment with the sole intention of renovating & re-selling. I don't think they even ever lived there. |

so, obviously there is no permit parking without an endless wait, but what about daily parking? What is the price and how early does it fill up usually? |

Sullymw, The daily parking spots fill up by 6:30 am. It's $4 to park/day. I used to park in the Shoprite parking lot which is $5/day (or at least it used to be) - I recently got a parking permit. The Shoprite parking lot does not fill up. |

There is a lot of fluctuation in the daily parking. My wife drives to the train station every day around 10 a.m., and always finds a place. (I think maybe it fills up, but then, somehow, a few people leave?>) As for the south orange jitney: There is only one, and it only covers MOntrose and Tuxedo Park (by Seton Hall). This is because it was something of a test case, and purchased with a grant. The town plans to expand service, but I don't know which neighborhood is next on the list. |

Until we can find a better solution, I am thinking of driving down and using the 2hr parking behind Toro Loco. My wife and our nanny will drive down and pick up the car when she leaves for work. I suspect that there shouldn't be any problems parking in the 2hr lots at that time. Also, is there any street parking up near the duck pond? I drove around and many of the streets have no signs, but there still may be an ordinance that is not obvious, and I'm not sure people want commuters parking in front of their houses. |

sully, 1. Re: the 2 hour parking behind Toro Loco, you didn't specify the times, but if the car stays there after the meter runs out, you are likely to be ticketed regularly (if after 8 am). 2. I believe a number of commuters park near the duck pond on Mead St. and Meadowbrook Lane (in the park, not in front of houses). |

my wife would pick it up well within the 2hr period. I guess I'll have to see what is available around town before the 7:03 train and get my name on the long waiting list for a permit |

Come to the BOT meeting this evening and listen to the justification for a $3.5 million bond issue in part for the development of parking facilities.

Could this be for the Brunner facility? Do you know whether the town purchased the Gulf Station, and if so for how much? 3.5 million seems low to fully develop the site for a parking garage. |

The Shoprite lot sure does fill up, if you get there after 9am. You can also park on that street between the library and the Senior Center, since those 12-hour meters seem to stay open sometimes until 10am. (I can give this away now that I'm a SAHM.) Also, the town will give you a temporary permit during your third trimester of pregnancy. |

Supposedly you only need to put in enough quarters to get you to 4PM (that's what the SO Parking Authority told me). To play it safe, I put in 12. |

I usually go to the bank every couple of weeks and pick up a bunch of rolls. Kind of a pain, but cheaper than the $5 Shop Rite lot. |

Howard, looks like they will also be discussing "Contract for Consulting Services for Site Improvements for the Tony Smith Sculpture" I sure HOPE that is a Grant and not something they are going to piss our tax dollars away on. |

Simple question, what was the $3 million bond issue for last night? How is it planned to be expended? Is it for acquisition or development of a parking garage and where? Mark, you were at the meeting last night, can you inform us? Many thanks... |

Did TerriAnn recuse herself from Closed Sessions due to her "conflict of interest" with her self: *I think it would destroy the character of our lovely downtown to locate a massive parking deck in the NJ Transit lot. *I recommend increasing parking at the main train station to the extent possible while designing any structured parking there to be aesthetically pleasing and in context with the river greenway project and the development of the plaza area by SOPAC and the nearby restaurants. In addition, 2 other campaign promises were broken last night alone: *I will ensure that closed meetings are limited to those few items in the statute that really need to be private *I will work to ensure fiscal responsibility here in our Village, to ensure that department heads stay within their budgets, to ensure that bonding is kept low and in check, that our credit is good, and to ensure that any incentives that we must give to developers to build on vacant or blighted parcels are equally fair to Village residential taxpayers and business owners. "Government under glass"??? Uh....yeah, right! |

Pippi, don't feel bad. When we moved to SO, we put our names on the resident parking list. 5.5 years later, when we left (last month) we were #10 & #11. So close, I could taste it... |

sully - there is a shorter wait for the NJ transit lot but it's $615 more a year! that quite a bit more...someone explain to me please why SO residents are not afforded the resident rate in the NJ transit lot? It's not fair. woodstock - I fear the same may happen to me <sniff> so what did you do for 5.5 years to get to the train? right now my husband takes me most mornings and picks me up most evenings. I walk the rest of the time. but that could get tiresome for us both... |

Because it belongs to NJ Transit, not South Orange...get on both lists, and pay the extra for the years between when you get to the top of the NJT list, and when you finally get your resident permit. Back when we moved to town, in the early days of midtown direct, there was no NJT lot, but the wait for the resident lot was "only" 12-18 months of walking every day. Good luck. |

susan - I did put myself on both and it will KILL me to pay that much more for several years. while I know the lot is owned by NJ Transit, I still believe there should be some preferenial treatment for town residents. |

Wish I could agree, but I can't. In a state-owned lot, why should residents of towns not lucky enough to have train stations pay more than those of us in station towns? How could that policy be supportable on the part of a state agency? |

It can't. The lot should have been purchased and developed by the town. That election issue was about the time you arrived to South Orange, Susan. |

Does anyone know a really good place to advertise a parking spot? Are other people in town renting spots? It's 30 feet from the SO train parking and out of the sun. I would let it go for less than the going rate. PM any ideas if you prefer. |

You just need friends who live w/in true walking distance of the train. Then you just drive to their street and park in front of their house/in their driveway (as a matter of fact, that's what a friend of mine in W. ORange parks in front of our house).

Moonwalk- Unfortunately a lot of the streets surrounding the train station have two hour parking signs. We somtimes let friends park in our driveway when they ask. Luckily they're gone before we all get home. |
