I think we should have a dog park in south orange. The park next to church street has been vacant for plenty of years. It would be nice to bring your dog to the park to meet other dogs in town for him or her to play with. |

You are barking up the wrong tree. Please spare us. Before we spend a nickel on a dog park we should make sure that our people parks are maintained and in the very best condition possible. At present, this is not the case. And after we do that we should make sure that our downtown is properly maintained--which is totally not the case. In fact our downtown is a disgrace. Go visit the dog parks in Manhattan where there is a reason to have them. The area of the parks where they exist are completely unusable due to the smell etc. We have enough trouble with the smell in the area where the NJ Transit buses park. Please spare us. |

There is a group in Millburn starting a dog park in the South Mountain Reservation. I think this is a great idea, because it would be a county resource. I started looking into building one in Maplewood a few months ago and dropped the ball. Now that I hear this news, I am heartened to learn of it and will defer to that group. I think the reservation is certainly close enough for me, though being able to walk to it would have been nice. AlleyGator, on this board, is in contact with the Millburn group.

I wonder if they are thinking about using the fenced in deer area. It would be great. It could be closed so the dogs would not run away and sprayed for ticks. Who can we get in touch with to support this idea? |

Montrose13 makes an excellent point. The current state of our parks warrants serious attention. Trees have been lost and not replaced. The house by the pond looks like a neglected storage facility. And then there's the streetscape which was installed with the walks and gaslamps in the center of town. Did they ever consider maintenance when those designs were implemented? Did they ever float an RFP to solocit concepts from multiple firms, some of which might have considered maintenace aspects in any final design? If they are going to have landscaped walkways, they need to be maintained. And just throwing some mulch is not maintenance. There is no comprehensive strategic approach to the parks or anything else for that matter. They tore down the old Spiotta Park which had nice brick patios which required no maintenance, and instead put in sod which has to be cut and maintained. At that time they also build the fountain and gazebo at the train station. Now they want to tear it down to install a sculpture. Enough already. As for a dog park, who's going to pay for it? Who would maintain it? With all that's going on, I'd like the BOT to FOCUS!!!

People who own dogs would maintain it. Dog parks are often some of the nicest parks in a given town. It's the parks run by the town itself that tend to be poopholes.

We have been discussing two potential locations for a dog park. The recreation committee will be reviewing the plans for one of them in the next couple of months. To show support (and I have been pushing for one for a while) please send an email to either myself or the village clerk.

One location that has been discussed is the back of memorial park (on Valley street) and that is the one the recreation committee will be reviewing.

First, South Orange needs to make it legal to bring a dog into a park. Why look for spots for dog parks when no parkland allows dogs in? |

The newly renovated park on Valley is rarely used and I always thought its use as a dog park made a great deal of sense. I have even used it as such "unofficailly" since no one is ever there. |

The newly renovated park on Valley may not be used much yet, but once word gets out that they have a fabulous 'dinosaur themed' playground, the kids are going to come. We've been there a few times, and my daughter loves it. If that park is in contention, I would suggestion the rear part of it for a dog run, not in the front by the new playground equipment. |

If the dog owners want a dog park, let them pay for it. The last thing we need is another capital improvement project when the current ones have not been completed or those that are completed, not maintained properly. Its really getting absurd. Where is the overall vision for this town??? Maybe dogs could be walked by the old stone house, or by the river walk or by the tony smith sculture, or around the SOPAC obelisk. Need I go on? |

I've never ever seen anyone in this park, you know, the one with rusty see-saws and sharpened jungle gym equipment from the 60's.
It's long, ideal for running. That yellow line measures 530 feet - nearly 2 football fields long.

Hmmm, I've gotta ask some of my older friends how they survived 10/15 years ago when there were no such a thing. Why can't folks just walk their dogs around like we used to, seems ubsurd to dedicate any land solely for dogs(or any other domesticated pets), wouldn't that be a waste of space & money ? |

10 - 15 years ago, you could take your dog to "dog hill" and just let your dogs frolic in the park off leash. Until a few grumpy people complained, called the cops and ruined all the fun. Now we have to do it "legally" or not at all. As for maintenance, the dog owners can do the work, it's not very much maintenance, there is VERY little cost involved and could easily be gotten through donations. It isn't like this has to cost the tax payers tons of (or any) money. |

Ace: It's no more a waste of space than it is to dedicate land to tennis courts, or baseball diamonds, or swimming pools. not all residents use those things, either, but a significant number do. |

AlleyGater, those of us who own sighthounds aren't offended by laws that forbid us from letting our dogs off leash, because we can't do it even if the law allows it. Of course, it does deprive you and your dog of fun, and that's a shame. So AlleyGater, what's the latest news from the Millburn folks?

YES, South Orange defiantly needs a dog park. Not only will it be place were dogs can meet other dogs. Dog owners can meet other dog owners there too. The first time I sow a dog park was when I was a little girl. The dog park was in Boston Massachusetts. They had fire hydrants in there and other thing that dog like to play with. I can't weight for South Orange to get a dog park. |
