1) Quarry
2) Mead Street alongside new basketball courts

(Urchins tossed stones at me last night; I asked why they were doing it and they laughed. The place needs a nighttime babysitter.)

Dave, hopefully there was no damage to you or your car, but it seems to me this could get serious very fast. Were the kids in the basketball courts, or other side of the street? If they were at Baird, I would call and politely raise hell. If nothing else, if someone reports the same kind of thing another time, the Rec people will know it's not a one-time thing.

The improvements to the courts look great, but with the new scenic fence the property can't be locked, and I also worry about balls flying into the street, or kids running into the street. Though it seems sorta cold to be complaining about a completed improvement!

I know these harassing hooligans. Not that well mind you or I'd whoop 'em. You just need to get your cell phone out and tell them you've dialed "91," don't make me dial another "1."
Works every time and I'm just a little white girl.

Note: I was a pedestrian. This is actually 2nd time it's happened and it happened to my wife once. 3 times warrants a thread, I thought. I've also witnessed cars hit by rocks. The place simply needs supervision or it needs to have the lights turned off at night.

SONanny, what does one have to do with the other? Did you call the police?

Dave, absolutely call the police as soon as it happens. I assume the *guy* in you wants to let it go, and not bring in the cops, but calling the cops will definitely end it beyond just the attack on you.

Throwing rocks isn't just kids being kids...

Now that I think about it, the culprits may simply have been good Jews or Christians, who thought you were trying to convert them to another religion.

"If your brother, the son of your father or of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the spouse whom you embrace, or your most intimate friend, tries to secretly seduce you, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods,” unknown to you or your ancestors before you, gods of the peoples surrounding you, whether near you or far away, anywhere throughout the world, you must not consent, you must not listen to him; you must show him no pity, you must not spare him or conceal his guilt. No, you must kill him, your hand must strike the first blow in putting him to death and the hands of the rest of the people following. You must stone him to death, since he has tried to divert you from Yahweh your God. . . ."(Deuteronomy 13:7–11)

I didn't have my cell with me at the time. One time it was broad daylight. Last night (Sunday) it was about 9pm. Not sure if Baird was open or not. On another rock throwing incident, I actually took photos of the two kids who were doing it. Still have it, but that was from a year ago.

Well well well Dave I think I'll keep my comments to myself. NOT!!! Wonder how long it will be before there are real problems there! Already there's trouble, and yes we've had rocks thrown at us too. Was going to call the police when we got home, but they seem to have their hands full with a gas leak.

By the way, were you wearing one of those shirts that says 'boys are stupid! Throw rocks at them!?

I started walking over and then saw the basketball lights go out, so I assumed things were happening. The platform tennis guys have re-started their game. It's only going to get worse if there's not a major crackdown. These criminals kids are brazen little monsters who try to harm people and laugh in their faces. It's bad.

I seem to remember my being the only one who saw the problems we'd have with these new courts and non residents being allowed to use them! Guess I'm not alone now, am I?

Dave did you smell the gasleak earlier? About 6ish? We had rocks thrown at my car, from the jerks on the basketball courts.

If Andy doesn't do something about it NOW we're going to have major problems. But I doubt very much these kids really care. They know nobody is ever going to confront them about their behavior.

The question that has gone unanswered in this thread is has anyone notified the police of this problem? This isn't something that should be laughed off as kids being kids. Turning off the lights isn't the solution. There are some lawless punks acting up in the park, and they need to be dealt with sternly by the police. Let the lights stay on so the people who paid for these facilities can use them.

I assume Just The Aunt got a look at their ID's. She doesn't seem like one to jump to conclusions.

1) Where they're from is not relevant to me.
2) I agree with regard to calling the police. Not sure when I will, as I won't be walking that route any more.
3) Even if the police are called, pointing to a crowd of 80 kids and saying someone in there threw a rock will likely make the person who called even more of a target in the future. These are dangerous thugs.
4) Whose bright idea was it to build new courts? They don't work anywhere else in town and we're seeing why. How many more times will we have to post about each incident before someone gets badly hurt? If night play is to continue, put SUPERVISION there immediately.

If NO ONE has reported these incidents, though more than one person seems to have experienced them, multiple times, how can the police or Baird do anything about the situation?? It's not necessarily a matter of finding a particular perp for a particular event, but starts with police awareness, patrol, warnings, etc. SOPD needs to know that this is going on, and that it isn't just a one-time thing.

Has the Baird staff even been alerted (sorry if I missed something in the thread that would answer this; not up to re-reading all)?

Posting here, while I appreciate the heads up as a Floods Hill neighbor, doesn't necessarily inform either SOPD or Baird.

Hard to believe the "incidents" are serious enough to argue for shutting down the courts, but not serious enough to warrant a simple call to the police.

Uh, when you see the 'kids' walking back into Orange you know they aren't from town. And as I mentioned in a thread a few months ago, some of these kids are know to the children of some of my mom's friend's who live in the Valley area of Orange and West Orange.

Anyway, I just spent the better part of an hour talking with Andy. He was unaware rocks were being thrown. He's going to try to determine where the rocks are coming from and speak with the kids.

I was very satisfied with our conversation. It sounds like the kids respect what Andy has to say because he is receptive to what they have to say.

Dave, give Andy a call and let him know what happened. I mentioned this thread to him, but am not sure if he's going to read it or not. As I said, I hung up feeling very satisfied with the conversation. Andy answered all my question and addressed all my concerns. I'm sure he'll be willing to speak with anyone else who calls.

cheers -

Dave - Gotta concur with others. Phone it in to police - just to report location/description of incident and get this on their radar. Call Baird Center as well.

I also think it is incumbent upon the advocates of expanding the courts - BOT members in particular, I think HOOPS was a strong supporter as well - to be cognizant of this and either thru your interactions at the Baird Center or on your committees, make mention of these reported incidents. I don't think anyone questions Dave's veracity on the attack occurring.

You need to get to work on making these courts you wanted not be the nuisance (if that's not too weak a word) many posters feared they would be.

I agree. I believe you'll see an increased police presence around Baird. They (the town administration) really do lurk on these boards you know! If the facility is open, an attendant/employee should be watchful over the grounds of Baird, IMHO.

To think someone who is playing racketball and getting pelted with rocks is crazy. To think 80 kids are gathering around with no supervision is equally nuts.

I don't think the police should be called at all. I suggest that when walking by, bring a baseball bat. One good shot to the knee and that will be one less person throwing rocks.

Repeat as necessary.
