For quite some time I've kind of believed him no longer lived here that he went to New York or went to LA and I was safe in my towns. And although the sighting didn't hurt at the time I've managed to obsess over seeing him here and worked myself into a tizzy of sorts so I once again see him at each turn I make because now I know he lives here in my yard. And since I saw him and his gay green Miata although the recurrent dream had stopped with my headaches, there are new ones each night, and each one is different, and they include him's family members who gave us such hell and gave us such pain through the years it's not fair they haunt me now. The oddest thing is that one year ago when I started this bloggette of mine, I secretly hoped him would find it and read it and see my hurt and my pain and realize his actions were real and were painful and come make things better with me. I. Was. An. Idiot. Now I just want him [better not say it in a public forum; suffice it to say, I will retain my widow status]. He really should have left town when he ran away from home because this is my world and my life that I've been working so hard to create and enjoy and my only goal is to have fun and to laugh (and work on my taxes a few times a week ) and I should not have to worry about seeing him at the intersection Maplewood and Jefferson or at the Starbucks at the SO train station or any place else. I'm not down and I'm not even aching I'm just a bit distracted by this. Just. Go. Away. |

Ahhhh Las, You just saw a ghost. That's all, a lost soul who is no longer part of your dimension. A wise person (my mom)often told me ghosts can't hurt you-- but they can be annoying. You have a whole different world now---and it belongs to YOU. Soooooo, who you gonna call? Calli I've heard that ghosts cannot abide the smell of mint and bourbon |

Calli, as always, you are right. I have this ability to make a big thing out of a little thing. I was surprisingly fine when I saw him but kept indulging in obsessing. I do know this: Obsessions start out as indulgences - you allow yourself the time to think; I should have quit while I was still in control of it. The good part about seeing the ghost was that it reminded me I get to review his tax return. My attorney requested it the next day. (Part of me hopes he had some success for the sole reason I get part of it.) Subconsciously I must have known about ghosts and their intolerance of mint and bourbon. I made a jar of mint/sugar syrup the other day and have had a mint julep (or two) daily for over a week. Unlike wine, the nice part about sweet bourbon is it goes straight to your head, thereby eliminating that awkward moment between consumption and buzz. |

Why is Al yawning?
This is Al in the cat parlor, a room dedicated to him. He is resting after a long day in the sun (his room gets the morning light). It's not easy being a cat in Lynn's flat. So Many Choices: Multiple boxes, tuna or salmon sushimi, 2% milk or running water, upstairs or down. Why is Al sitting in the chair? Shouldn't it have a cover on it?
Of course it should, and it does. This photo is months old. The chair is now always covered. Have an issue on the chair once, shame on you. Have an issue on the chair seventeen times, I'll keep an upside down vinyl tablecloth on it (felt side up for extra absorption) when I'm not sitting in it. Why is Lynn holding her breath? and damn! when did she get so hot?
And herein lies a bit of an issue. It would seem someone (likely an orange tabby (see: photo above)) crawled under the protective vinyl tablecloth I throw on my chair each day when I leave for work... and peed. The whole place smells. I smell and had to change because I sat in it. (I'm not that oblivious - I had a couple of late nights and haven't pulled the cover off since Tuesday; the pee had time to dry in the afternoon sun for days. ) I have to order a new cushion (Crate and Barrel to the rescue, because I had $150 I didn't know what to do with anyway) and have to bring the slipcover to be dry cleaned, a chemical process I abhor. And...it's raining! Nothing like 100% humidity and a chair full of cat piss! Shame on Al.

Yikes - sorry about the cushion - should the new one be dry cleaned too so the colors will be the same? (they say you're supposed to dry clean both pieces of a suit even if only one is dirty) I have a new kitten (Tobey - I'm missing West Wing) & it seems he (I think he's a he) - it seems that he was either sick or bored/acting out & did all possible types of litter box action on kid #2's newly changed bed...but the covers were messed up & I didn't see it & kneeled right in the very runny poo...ugh - he really should wait until his full citenzenship issues before doing stuff like that! That was 2 days ago & so far nothing else...am keeping the litterbox pristine, in case that was an objection, but I think he may have been given way too many treats...fingers crossed. |

doulamomma, Did you have Tobey checked for worms and coccidia? Both are so common in kittens and produce the (ahem) symptoms you describe. las, When did Al start forgetting his manners? I assume he's been checked out medically, and this is strictly behavioral. You may want to check out www.thecattherapist.com. Carol Wilborn is a little kookie (what cat purrson isn't?)but I have actually seen her work miracles in previously unadoptable shelter cats. She was also involved (although I don't know how successful she was)with the kitten who was stuck inside the wall of the deli in Greenwich Village a few weeks ago. She will be giving a seminar in Cliffside Park in July, and appears regularly in the NYC area. Calli

Congrats on the latest addition to your family Doula. And it's a boy - of course. (And thanks for the dry cleaning tip. I take all the slipcovers in...) Calli, I think I knew the cat thrapist at one time - she is nuts. Al is healthy - he received a death sentence about nine years ago, but miraculously recovered, and since then I torture him my making him give blood and urine specimens repeatedly throughout the year. Al's had issues since about the time we moved to Maplewood (huge house, little cat - it does make sense). It took a few years of trying virtually everything to keep him focused, and I finally threw him at Dr. Levine one day and told him to medicate him or keep him. He begged me to try solitary confinement, the one thing I would not previously agree to, so I tried it, it worked miracles. Al became a much better all around cat. We had a really great routine, and I realized he suffers from anxiety (don't know where he gets that from) and needs the structure of a period of lockdown each day to keep it together. And that is something we just can't manage in the apartment due to space limitations and the fact that for our routine we need a room with a window and a door that opens out (breaking out of his confinement room is part of the empowerment schtick that gives him confidence and puts him in a good enough state of mind that he doesn't sh*t himself). I can't believe this is my life. Nor can I believe my late husband got this cat months before we even met and I'm still cleaning up after him. |

It was no big deal, really. It had to be done and I set time to do it. I didn't call a press conference and I didn't seek approval and I didn't need an audience and I didn't interrupt a single person from their day. As a matter of fact, I planned ahead to do this early to avoid getting stuck on the first sweltering day of the year without a/c. Indeed, I put the a/c in my bedroom window. All by myself. And I still have no fcking clue as to why him made such a big deal of it all those years or why he required my babysitting skills to do so. Him really was a drama queen. |

Agreed, VIG. I installed my own A/C today as well. For the past 5 years, my ex was doing it with a song and dance, but since I can do it, I realize it's not such a big deal; no song nor dance required. However, while it's empowering to do so much sans men, there are things much better done with them. |

Pippi and Ess rolled their collective eyes and told me if solitary confinement works, solitarily confine the cat. Sometimes you just need to hear things. So yesterday I converted the downstairs closet into a solitary hole for Al the sh*tting-pissing orange tabby and put a battery operated light in there with a glass of water (let the rest drink from a bowl; Al prefers whatever I'm having) but no food figuring he'll break out soon and if he gets hungry enough enough that would be impetus to break free, and gave him a towel lined box for a bed and his very own litter box with a cover and told him to break out when he's ready and I left for the day with my fingers crossed and the flat not smelling. And when I came home later in the afternoon, Al greeted me at the door and there wasn't a mess to be seen or a smell to be smelled. So I locked him in his hole again today. He likes the closet. Just like his late dad used to.

It simply amazes me how things go along and they go along fine and then all of a sudden I crash. I crashed into him's tax return this afternoon. Per the Screw Your Loyal Wife Agreement, we get to review his taxes for a couple of years to make sure he's not coveting money I am due. It's not about alimony (there is none of that) it's about all the work I did for him for free because he was my husband and I loved him and wanted him to succeed. There really was nothing more I wanted in the world than for him to be proud of himself. It's just what you do for someone you love. Part of the giving up of yourself because it's really no big deal. Until he runs away from home on your 37th birthday and you realize you gave up so much there's nothing left without him and you have to reinvent yourself from scratch. So I've got his tax return in my paws and I see he earned a lot less than I did, which fascinates me because you'd think after all the years I kept him from being who he wanted to be he'd run away and make something of himself. (Is it possible I was not really the cause of his misery?..hmmm...) What bothers me most is pretty much everything having to do with the accountant. "Our" accountant. Who him still uses. The accountant we started using because he "gets" how freelancers' tax returns should be done. That said, I see these numbers that are so full of I want to scream. How dare this accountant maintain him as a client and continue the same practices no less! How dare he! I am thinking of sending him an email: I'm giving away Al. Email me if you want him. For no other reason than I can. |

No cat support, Cyn. I asked repeatedly. Eventually my attorneys stopped chuckling at the suggestion and started reminding me we went over this before. Al had another good day yesterday. He really likes the closet. This morning he broke out before I even made it through the front door. I asked what are you thinking? Get back in there and calm your nerves. And don't come back out until I'm gone...Go! He went back in. I really believe some of us just need to be told what to do. My cat, Al, the submissive. Maybe he should post on Craig's List? Am I Your Scaredy Cat? Orange Tabby Sub seeks Dom for litter box games. |

Thank you for telling me so, Pippi. And thank you for loaning me the prescription acne medication because only a true friend would help you realize your skin indeed looks like crap. And thank you for your honesty in backing out of adopting one of my three cats should I have died in the hospital once you found out about Al's little secret. I'm sure Ess appreciates your delegating that one issue-laden cat to her menagerie. She thinks you are a true friend as well. You are a valued friend indeed...
