Matilda, Maisie, Mallory, Malachai, Marshall (just throwin' em in the hopper. My 48 year old bosse's much younger wife named their son Milo. We were all a little non-plussed but I guess it is Irish)

Cynicalgirl - we're ok on the girls name, the boys name is more of an issue. I like Marshall, but I had a boyfriend with that name, plus it's my old boss' last name!

Please.........not Marshall!! I went out with a Marshall also. Eek. Plus, don't forget that it has to go with your last name. You would have competing SH sounds. Plus, no one is going to be yelling GO MARSHALL on the football field, or WE LOVE YOU MARSHALL at a rock concert. |

Multiply life by the Power of Two and look what you get. Congrats to you both. I am delighted for you both and will chime in with the duties and obligations of the expectant father. There is a great, very funny book out that is a spoof of "what to expect when your expecting" called "What to Expect when your Wife is Expecting". Full of unmentionable truths. I remember standing in line at the A&P five minutes before closing with a tube of choc. chip cookie dough and a quart of milk, wearing basically pajamas and having the woman behind me in line say "will this be your first child". I laughed, she laughed and I went home and made my lovely wife choc chip cookies. The things we do for love, the things we do for love. |

Two years ago, we had brunch with friends on Father's Day. One of their daughters was there with her husband. She was 8 months pregnant with their first child. TS & I decided that it would be appropriate to bring the dad-to-be a Father's Day gift. He was very touched. Tears came to his eyes as he pulled bottle and tubes of organic creams and lotions labeled things like "For you to rub on V's tummy", "For you to massage V's feet" out of the gift bag. Don't forget the presents for Notehead! |

"I recently saw a guy at the South Orange train station with a tiny tot in a strapped-on slingy thingy on his chest and I couldn't wait to have my own baby similarly mounted." Brought a tear to my eye, that did. I remember vividly how proud my hubby looked carrying our son in the snuggly. He was beaming with pride........one needed to wear sunglasses to look at his face. The great thing is that he's still very much like that (and the kid is 10). Congratulations to both of you. |

SoOrLady - I like Mirth! I have an old friend I no longer speak whose name is Matthew; I like Miles, Notehead doesn't; my boss' son is named Maxwell; I like Mason a lot, but we have good friends who have a son named Mason...and the reasons go on and on and on.... mjh - I imagine we'll all need sunglasses in December, too |

Need furniture advice: Where to purchase? We'd like to pick a place we could order the furniture but not have it delivered until I come home from the hospital. Can anyone recommend a particular brand of crib? Have looked on the internet but haven't seen anything I like that's reasonably affordable. We tend to like modern, not traditional furniture, and all the modern cribs cost upwards of $900! That seems pretty ridiculous to me. hi bets - welcome back from Maine Hope you had some lobster for me! |

Hi Pippi/mom-to-be! First as to names. You said you were looking for something different but not trendy. When my son was in 2nd grade there were 5 Matthew's in his class alone! (I also wanted an M name but never found one I liked, hence his name begins with an E.) If you're wedded to M names, although Max (not Maxwell) is getting popular, I don't think there will be 5 in one class. That was important not to have too many kids with my son's name but a name that was still pronounceable and spellable and people wouldn't go "huh?". I can't remember why I didn't go with Max. I like some of the other M name suggestions too. Milo, Miles. Even Marty isn’t bad. Furniture - we used a beautiful crib from a friend. It was new enough that I didn't have to worry about safety standards and we purchased a new mattress and all the bedding, etc to go with it. My feeling was that we’d have the crib for only a few years (we even used a great cradle for the first 2 months) and then we’d be getting a bed. Of course, if you’re definitely going to have more than one then a purchase makes sense as well. We went with light colored furniture and primary colors since we didn’t know what we were having either. There is a store on Route 22 westbound in Union or Hillside that we used to buy all of my son’s furniture including his current bed and the rocker. The people were great to deal with and their prices were discounted. I can’t remember the name off hand but perhaps someone else can. It may be called Crib Outlet. Hope it still exists. My thoughts are to take good quality used whenever it’s offered to save the money for the new things you really want/need for your child. Anyway, congrats again and can’t wait to say so in person when next I see you!

Pip is packin', folks. Hey, we're all family here, right? I recently made the point to my bride that we really ought to ask little kids what names THEY like. Now, I've been saying for a while that the next old-skool name that is due for a comeback is... Merv. It's like Max, but with a swerve. Merv. Pippi says what most of you are probably thinking: "No." I kind of feel like I'm taking the role of Seinfeld's buddy Kramer on this particular item, but I'm tellin' ya that Merv is comin' and we can either be leaders or followers. |

If he insists on Merv, I am praying for a girl! ess - I told him to ask little ess what she thinks of Merv. I figure she is on the cutting edge of cool. There's no way any of our contemporaries would think Merv is cool. I am pretty sure little ess wouldn't think it's cool either! wendy - I am not opposed to used furniture ...of course, as long as it meets current safetly standards. I got a copy of Baby Bargains and they do not recommend used cribs. But as long as they are only a few years old, I am comfortable with it |

ix-Nay on thinking that a girl will end the "Merv" option. There's always Mervaline or Merveleine. Which, when shortened, brings you right back to the original problem. Howzabout Mateo? I know a grown-up and a child with that name (spelled differently, tho). They're both handsome guys. Well, the grown-up was handsome the last time aI saw him. It's been a few years. He might look terrible now. So, maybe Mateos don't age so well.

Nah, they'll call him Merv the Nerve, for his outstanding courage. Listen, kids will come up with meanie-pants versions of lots of names (Matt the Fat, Art the Fart, Scott the Snot, Clyde the Snide, Kirk the Jerk, Phil the Pill, Bill the Shill, Jake the Fake, Luke the Puke, Nick the Dick, Willie the Silly, Mitch the Twitch, Rob the Knob, Bob the Slob, Greg the Egg, Sam the Ham, Alec the Phallic, Casper the Clasper, Moshe the Kosher, Kenneth the Menneth, Facho the Nacho, Julio the Foolio from Schoolio, and non-rhymers Saul Who Smells Like Cheese, Elliot the Wonder-Spaz, Ronnie That Loser From Gym Class, and that perennial non-favorite, Adolf) but you can't let that stand in the way of something hip like MERV. |
