MATB - check the please help archive through June 6th 2006 - There is a thread "moving boxes needed" and there are a couple of people offering boxes etc. It was a friend of mine who started the thread and I know that she has all she needs, so these kind souls offering them may still have them.

I will check with her too and see if she has any spare.

POD doesn't seem too bad. I didn't actually book it yet, so I don't have access to exact numbers. But it was something like $395ish for delivery and removal once it's filled. They offer insurance on the contents because they say most homeowners won't cover--but I'm going to double check with my insurance agent.

The monthly storage starts out at in the high $200s for the first month, then goes down for the second and stays at that rate for every consecutive month. So, I think we can have the thing delievered and then removed and stored at thier site for 3 months--at which time we we hopefully be in a position to move things back in--for under $1000?

You can go to the website and fill out the appropriate screens as if you were booking one, but don't check out, and you can get the numbers that way.

When we were trying to clean up before moving we rented a 10 x 5 storage bin at City Closets (formerly Pinnacle Self Storage) next to HD. The rent was under $115 and includes the free use of one of their vans to bring your stuff over. We filled the place up and Little K and I completed the process in about an hour and a half.

Yes, it is more, but considering my husband is hardly ever home and we have three kids to look after when he is, it's better for us in terms of time and convenience to move the stuff in to something parked right on our front lawn.

We will revisit, but I don't think we have the time or the energy to drag 3 rooms full of furniture over to Union.

Gotcha. We're just going to be bringing stuff we could easily fit into the minivan, so it's no big deal to bring it to Valley St in SO

I probably shouldn't say this, but our one and only major home improvement job (adding a family room, master bedroom and bath) started out with the contractors drilling through the back wall to establish grade for the new foundation and hit a gas line. No fire and no real damage, but it was pretty exciting, kinda like the Keystone Kops, for a few minutes. :-)

Good luck!!

Had our meeting with the architect and the contractor this afternoon. Everything looking good. Silly me, I thought when the architect told me that the contractor told her he'd be "ready to go as soon as we got the permits," that meant we'd be ready to go as soon as we got the permits. Actually, what it meant was he'd be ready to go 2 weeks after we got the permits.

And so it begins!

Should I or shouldn't I?

Update on the POD: seems it's O.K. for us to leave it on the front lawn for the duration of construction, per Bob Mittermier in the building department. So this is good for us because it costs less money to leave it here than to haul it away and store it every month.

But here's my dilemma. I thought maybe I would distribute a brief note to neighbors explaining that it will be there for a few months and that the town has said it's O.K., just in case anyone has any concerns when they see it sitting here for weeks on end. But then I think, as long as I'm doing everything "by the book," do I really owe anybody an explaination? And if I do distribute the note, who do I distribute it to? The whole street? Just those with direct line of site to my front yard? Only immediate neighbors two or three houses in every direction?

I've already mentioned it to a couple of people on the block, and word does tend to travel fast, so maybe I don't even need to bother.

I don't know. What do you think?

It's summer. People are outside chatting. Trust the grapevine. Besides, once they start hauling in equipment, supplies and the guys are sitting under trees having lunch, the Pod will look like nothing.

I, however, would be quite stressed about my lawn. You'll kill your grass. Seriously, are those things secure?

The grass isn't so great to begin with, and my husband's always talking about replacing it, so that's no great loss.

Can't see why it wouldn't be secure. I suppose if someone was really determined to get in they could, but they'd probably wake the whole neighborhood before they got in. Plus, homeowners covers the contents, so I'd just get some new furniture!

MeAnd,
I think you should follow your best instincts and dash off a little note to your neighbors---it is considerate, and, well, neighborly. And, for being so gracious, you just might open yourself to a world of dinner invitations, potluck dishes and homemade cookies. You don't have to plaster the neighborhood, just a few houses in the immediate area. I think it is a very nice gesture and will foster goodwill.
Just my 2 cents,
Calli

Well, it ain't as wonderful as a new baby, or nearly as exciting as a trip to the Galapagos (Jamie, I am so J!), but right now it's good enough for me that progress is being made. Baby steps, but progress IS being made.

Progress is progressing fairly well, Pippi. Thanks for asking.

As of this minute we are still on schedule to "begin" on Monday. As you can see the POD arrived. I was very impressed. They give you a 3-hour window for delivery (mine was 4 to 7 PM), and will call when on route to your location, about 1/2 hour before. They called and said they would arrive between 6:15 and 6:30, and they actually arrived at 6:15!

A friend came for a visit and helped pack a few boxes, and we moved larger pieces of art, the fireplace screen, the curtain rods and such in to the POD without having to wrap or package them. A couple of guys are coming on Saturday to help the hubster move the few large pieces of furniture in. Then on Monday, I have Branch Chem-Dry coming to take two area rugs to be cleaned, and they will bring them back to me on Thursday, at which time I'll throw them--all cleaned and neatly rolled up--in to the POD. Then the last few smaller remaining things my husband can do a bit at a time, on the evenings he's home, during the month of July.

The contractor came by with the excavator on Tuesday to plan strategy, at which time I asked if there was any way to spare my patio. The contractor said "no problem, I'll just dig it up and pile the bricks and stones neatly at the back of the yard!" I love him already. Hubby and I were trying to figure out how and when we were going to do it ourselves.

Just this morning I dug up one of my Wiegela's, wrapped the root ball in burlap and moved it to the back of the yard to get it out of the way. It was harder and took longer than I thought. Hopefully I'll have a little help with the other three plants I need to remove this weekend.

Good news on the cabinetry. Seems the guy who was going to do some custom designed woodworking projects throughout the house can also do kitchen cabinets, semi-custom. Originally, we were working with a kitchen designer, using stock cabinets. To have the custom guy do the entire job (custom designed fireplace mantle, a couple of built-in benches, closets, columns in several locations throughout the house)--including the kitchen--will be $7500 less than if we used the kitchen designer for the kitchen and the woodworker for the built-in's. Plus we get to remove the cost of installation from the contractor's bill.

I also just got word directly from Viking that my range hood insert only needs to be 600CFM's as opposed to 1000CFM's, which will also probably save me a few hundred dollars!

TMI?

Hope your new "addition" is "progressing" well too? I'm thinking we might have "due dates" that are very close. Sometime in December, right?

Yes, good news at every turn, which only makes me nervous that there's some bad news coming somewhere soon!

My addition will actually, ultimately, hopefully, make money in the long run. Whereas yours will suck you dry financially, and then keep all the money s/he makes when s/he finally gets a paying job!

No no no - you must think positively!!!!
It will all go as smoothly as it has.
Until it doesn't.

Hi, Me -

If I wanted to come over for an iced coffee would we sit in the PODS that is on your front lawn? Would you serve that Tupperware of worms you saved from your wiegela transplant? If so, do you still have dishes to serve them on or will I have to use my hands?

Keep your chin up. Although it will seem like a long living hell this summer, it will be a distant memory for the rest of your life.

Love you las.

Still have the sofa in the "family room." I'm leaving it because it needs to be cleaned anyway (and because I can't imagine trying to live here with the kids for the next week without it). If you'd like to eat worms, I'd be happy to serve them to you. Haven't been able to dig up the remaining three shrubs because of the rain.

Demolition of the existing kitchen is Phase II--AFTER my new kitchen is up and running and fully-functioning (or at least mostly fully-functioning). As a result, not much has been packed from the kitchen.

I know, some day I'll look back on this and say "remember when?" Once I'm outta here for July, hopefully I can relax a bit.

So much for starting "as scheduled" on Monday!

Yeah, O.K., it was pouring rain. But it isn't pouring rain today, and nobody is here! It's beginning to look less and less likely that I'll have a kitchen to make breakfast for the kids when they go back to school in September.

Boy this is fun.

Even more fun: Just got home after a couple days in the hospital for I.V. antibiotics for an out-of-control infection on my face! Oh well, at least it was a couple of days relaxation without the kids screaming and all the demands of daily life! (kinda pathetic that I have to be admitted to the hospital in order to get time for myself!)

I would have liked to pretend it was a spa, and mostly it was O.K., except for all those times they like to wake you up for meds, vitals, etc. The Infectious Diseases guy finally showed up last night around midnight. The first night I had the room all to myself. The second, I had a roommate. She was in for some kind of testing, so wasn't deathly ill, but she had her own schedule of meds, vitals and visits from doctor's and nurses, plus annoyingly beeping computerized I.V. drips. So, last night wasn't such a great nights sleep.

Believe it or not, the food wasn't really that bad. And I tried to eat healthy stuff. Perhaps it's just the idea that someone else makes it, puts it in front of me and then takes it away when I'm done, that made it seem like it tasted good!

The Infectious Diseases doc called it Erysipelas, which is in the same family as celulitis! When I went to the E.R on Sunday with almost the entire left side of my face swollen and oozing, they were concerned about the infection getting in to the bloodstream and becoming systemic, spreading to the brain, or going behind my eye and my losing my sight. This after 7 days of 2000mgs of Cephalexan. Last Friday all the swelling had gone, and the redness had dimished. Saturday I woke up and the swelling was back. Sunday I woke up and it had spread around and above my eye!

Needless to say, it seemed like staying in the hospital and getting shot up with huge doses of antibiotics seemed like the best idea!

Nonetheless, I finished the new Stephen King novel I took out of the library last week, read a People Magazine and did the crossword, and read a few other magazines and watched some TV. Things I don't normally have a whole lot of time to do.

The one I dug out of the ground last Thursday is still growing like a weed, with it's root ball wrapped in burlap! The rest I never got a chance to dig out. But since work is now apparently not going to start until Thursday, if it's not raining tomorrow, perhaps I can do another one or two.

Unless all these antibiotics wreak more havoc on my intestines than they already are!

This is exactly the kind of luck I have, in general, my entire life!

(God, sitting up in his heaven, looking down on the world: "Oh, look! MATB is planning to start an addition on her house that she's been planning for almost a year! I know, I'll make it rain every day for a week straight! Ah, ha ha ha!")
