Why I haven't been online most of this week -- a major rant: What do you do to a well meaning individual who gets on your perfectly running Compaq 5190 computer and crashes it? Not just crashes it but decides that the only way to correct the problem which lead to the crash is to reformat the hard drive. This wouldn't be so bad were it not for the fact that well meaning individual having reformated the hard drive suddenly realized that he/she did not know how to reinstall windows and neither did his/her friend the computer savvy expert who was going to get the computer running more smoothly that ever. So, out the door with the CPU Tuesday night. Back Wednesday early afternoon with a chagrined helpful individual asking, "How do you reload windows on this machine?". Windows loaded. Next application to be added is the virus scan. Computer crashes again. Black screen. Won't start up. Well meaning individual mumbles something about hoping the bios isn't irreparably damaged and takes off -- mumbling something about returning on Sunday -- maybe. Leaving behind one very brain dead CPU. Thank goodness for start-up disks! Got the windows reloaded, safely reloaded the virus scan. Went on line to download four years of critical updates for Windows 98 ( did I mention that I use a dial up connection?), looked for my Office 97 disk to add on my productivity software and discovered that it was missing. Gone with well meaning individual who had planned to reinstall it after reinstalling the windows 98 operating system. Only now he/she isn't too sure what he/she did with it. Spent Saturday at Comp USA. They no longer sell '97. They don't even have 2000. Bought and installed XP which uses too much systems resource for my 128 RAM system. Now the machine is straining to open the control panel. Next step will be uninstalling XP and trying a custom installation. I don't look forward to doing that. I also need to remember how I got rid of the network sign in screen and how to reset AOL 7 so I can open multiple windows (never a problem before). Any helpful advice or moral support would be most welcome just now. Thanks for listening. Joan. |

You can still get older software versions from E-bay, but now that you have the new Windows, it should be a lot more stable (so I hear). RAM is incredibly cheap. You can probaby add another 128 Megs for about $30, if bought online. What a pain. Having a Mac, I miss out on virii and can reinstall the system (which I've done twice in 4 years) in a matter of minutes without losing data on the hard drive. For your next computer, consider a Mac.

Dave: I'm still running windows 98. It's the XP version of Office which I installed. After a bit more tweeking, the system seems to be up and running but there are really better ways to spend five days of time. Note too that there never was a virus. Just a caring individual who felt that the system was a little too sluggish for his/her taste. |

Please say you at least had your serial number for Office, so you got the upgrade price! A new version is a few hundred dollars more than the upgrade. If this person "lost" your software, he or she owes you more than an explanation. |

Joan, If you still have your license information, then borrow a copy of Office 97 from someone who still has the CD. That is not a violation of the license. I likely have a couple copies, it I take the time to look around. |

George: First of all, thanks for taking time from your busy campaign to try and help. I wish you the best of luck in next week's election. Office 97 license no. was on back of jewel case. Jewel case went way of disk. Trying to track both down now. In the meanwhile, I bought the full XP version of office so I have a license for that. Problem is that it uses too much systems resource for my computer. Will 97 accept a newer license number for a more powerful version? I also still have my original disk for Microsoft Works (the '97 was an upgrade) but that did not come with a license number at all. This weekend I hope to have to uninstall everything and try re-install with a truncated version. Hopefully that will work. |

Did you upgrade your operating system to XP, as well? |

Dave: No because (a)I was assured that Office XP was compatable with windows 98 and (b) All of my preloaded files, including windows were stored on the same quick restore disk. Changing the version of windows was a little more than I was up to just now. Some of these other files are a little too big to back up on floppies. |

Joan - still reading funny mysteries? I have some classics, a lot of them "Golden Age" - John Dickson Carr/Carter Dickson, Phoebe Atwood Taylor/Alice Tilton, Edmund Crispin...the list goes on. I'll have to bring some along on the train. |

John: Thank you for your kind and sincere wishes. I have been very taken with the wnderful work you have been doing with the families of 9/11 victims in the past year and your condolences mean a great deal to me. Today I have decided to sit vitual shiva with my friends on MOL. I have come to feel so close to so many of you over the past year even though I am aware of having met only a handfull of you in person. Thanks to all of you who have sent e-mails and posted messages of condolence on various threads over the past several days. Your kind wishes have meant so much to me and my family at this difficult time. This is a wonderful community and I am so happy to be a part of it. Joan
