I just got back from a parade committee meeting at Town Hall. Everything is ready. The order of march has been approved (with spaces provided for the insertion of late responders - its not too late to sign up), the program for the ceremony has been finalized, the tomb has been delivered and is waiting to be put in place on parade day, there is even a sound system ready and waiting to be hooked up. All we need now is sunshine. Let's all pray for good weather on Monday morning.

The cat on my lap has heard erroneously that Dr. Naomi will be marching in tomorrow's parade (or perhaps riding on a snazzy yellow scooter). Now the cat wants to be in the parade too. If he could yowl on key to the tune of Be Kind To your Web Footed Friends, thereby ushering in the Kiwanis Duck, I might consider it but the cat is hopelessly tone deaf.

Never mind that the cat is not a member of any of the participating organizations (his adoption predated the official formation of JAC), is unable to walk more than a few feet without lying down in the road and taking a nap, and won't travel in a vehicle because he associates cars with trips to the Vet and we all know what that is like.

The question is, how can I turn him down gently? I will still have to live with him when this parade thing is over.

I heard the parade was wonderful. Now, how are the cat and your lap getting along these days? I notice they haven't posted together recently.

Debby:

The cat on my lap is suffering from a severe case of bruised ego. He is still sulking because the parade has gotten far more attention than he has of late. He is also griping because several dogs, including a beautiful pair of dalmatians with similar coloring to his own, got to march in the parade and he did not. Only yesterday he asked me why he couldn't at least have ridden in the ambulance with the VFW Commander.

The fact that the dog on the floor is now leading him in the polls as a result of a highly successful parade appearance by so many of his constituency and the fact that the cat's birthday passed uneventfully with no party guests haven't helped. (I told him sending out those invitations in Cat without at least including a rough English translation was a bad idea.)

I'm sure that he will recover but it will take a little time.

So is he now the cat on the floor?

No. He's the cat clinging to the lap for dear life. He is demanding far more attention than ever.

For some time now the cat on my lap has been planning to run away from home; not because he is unhappy at home or because he has anywhere else to go (he hasn't) but because he doesn't feel appreciated.

The signs are obvious to the observant. The string has been carefully removed from the mostly uninflated heart-shaped mylar balloon he received as a Valentine's Day present (thank you Jerry). The narrow opening at the bottom of the balloon has been gnawed open and a not alltogether successful attempt has been made to place a surprisingly large quantity of dry kibble through the balloon's opening. His favorite catnip mouse is lying on the floor suspiciously close to the balloon and there is an unopened can of diet decaf soda lying under his favorite chair (How does he expect to open it? What does he plan to pour it into since he hasn't packed his bowl? Is this just a ruse to be left behind since he he is planning his get-a-way during lawn sprinkler season?)

In addition to packing his ballon bag, he has also been practicing window sceen butting in an attempt to create a space large enough to make his escape. He knows that dragging a mostly deflated balloon stuffed with moist kibble, a catnip mouse, a can of diet decaf soda is going to look a little suspicious.

Finally, he has managed to complete his statement by removing his purple collar and his ID tags so no one will be able to return him home before he even has a chance to leave.

So, if you see a somewhat large, somewhat disgruntled cat partially hiding under a deer- chewed rose bush trying unsuccessfully to suck moist kibble from the narrow end of a mostly deflated red balloon (with mud brown speckles?), please don't let him know that we know he is there.

The screen may be back in the window but he will come home as soon as someone opens the door and leaves it open long enough for him to re-enter, draging his disheveled balloon behind him.

The cat on my lap has known for some time that people shed their skin more often than snakes, sometimes as often as several times a day. He also knows that people crawl into new skin more often than a hermit crab. Both of these activities seem quite reasonable to him. (Don't ask me why.) What the cat on my lap has failed to grasp is why people find it necessary to remove and replace their feet so often.

The cat on my lap loves removed feet. As soon as a pair of human feet are removed, the cat on my lap will lay claim to them, covering them with the full extent of his body and fending off all claims on behalf of the feet's owner to reclaim them. The cat firmly believes that if he can control a pair of removed feet, he can prevent the owner of those feet from leaving the house (and thereby the cat) for long periods of time. (This cat really likes human company even though he is a greeat believer in parallel play -- in different rooms if at all possible.)

We usually play along with the cat's naif foot beliefs and gently urge him to remove his bulk from our removed feet, usually for a bribe.

One day recently a human family member was in a hurry to leave the house and needed to reattach his feet. The cat had ploped down on the removed feet as usual and refused to budge. What did the human family member do? He went and got another pair of removable feet and attached those to his body leaving the cat in possession of the original pair of feet. The poor cat was devestated.

Testing for Emmie. See if you can open the Blog section now. If not, someone will have start a new thread before you can open the blog menu in the normal way. (Unless Dave or Jamie can come up with a fix.)

Joan,
I am right here! It opened right up, no problem. Thanks for the lesson.

I also reset some access settings this afternoon, so that may have had an effect, too.

Debby:

The cat on my lap is still a little out of it after the all the catnip he seems to have gotten into while celebrating last night (He insisted that he meant to say cat nap when he tried to explain his condition when we stumbled in the door at about 1:30 AM this morning but the fact that he was walking on his head at the time(instead of his paws)was a dead giveaway. I guess that's what you get when you leave even the feline children alone in their beds while you go out and party.

I will certainly give him your best wishes when he comes out of it (the latest nap not the nip which has been placed firmly our out reach - we hope).

A very happy new year to you and yours from me and from the cat on my lap who has become so very of you, having read all of your kind posts.

The cat on my lap has been trying to type his own posts again. What is the best way to remove cat hair from between and below keys on a computer keyboard?

vacuum (removes the hair AND repels the cat, if he's like mine)

mjc:

Thanks for the hint regarding cat hair removal.

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your point of view, nothing repels this cat. He can even read the All Politics threads without having his hair stand on end.

Truly a stouthearted cat!

(ours unfortunately is more afraid of the vacuum than of the cars...)

Each cat has such a distinct personality.

The cat on my lap is far more stuborn than brave. Once he has claimed a perch, he refuses to vacate it for any reason until he is good and ready to do so. Even if he was planning to leave a space, hearing the vacume is enough to make him hold firmly to his ground until the vacuming is over.
