THE READER, starring Elizabeth Franz and Morgan Hallett that was so well received at the Goat Short Film Festival will be screening in a finished form at the Hilton Branch library before "The Middle of the World". The middle of the World is a compelling look at "a family of seven on a journey 2,000 miles across the hinterlands of Brazil on bicycles. Along the way, director Vicente Amorim beautifully explores the inner dynamics of a family facing a great challenge. The Middle of the World is an unimaginable road movie, both graceful and tender, about having the courage to pursue your dreams." I do hope that even if you saw THE READER at the Goat you will come over to the Hilton Branch and see the finished product. With a score by award winning composer Deborah Hurwitz THE READER is a whole new movie. I am really excited about the outcome. And so out I hope you will come. cheers

I hope that I can channel this inspiration into good works. Please come see what sort of started it all on January 7th at the Hilton Library at 7:15. And Don't forget that www.freshwater-films.com is set up to handle Paypal. seriously |

Well that was a fun and productive weekend. Thanks to the many MOL'ers who came out on Friday to see the film at the library. That was really thoughtful of you all and I appreciated the support. Saturday nights gang at Club El FLamingo was great, really responded well to the film so I have some high hopes for it. And then to spend today in the editing suite getting BUST finished was the perfect end to the weekend. So Bust is Picture Locked and now goes to the composer. Psyched. Hope he is ready to work, cause its gonna take a lot to out do what Deb did on The Reader. I know I know, different films, different feels, but she gave me exactly what I wanted and seemed to have an intuitive sense about directions to go and the like. A rare DELIGHTFUL find in an artistic person.

FIrst concert my son ever went to. Last summer on the cape at the Melody Tent. 3.5 year old who knows the words to almost every song they ever wrote. And a father who can play almost every song ever written on guitar. we saw them twice this summer in the span of a week and it was great cause the first time was the just duo and the second time was with their band. So the sets were different and the vibe was different. I used their song, Leaving, in my first film. Love em. Not ashamed to admit it neither.. |

Well we made it. The Tribeca Film Festival deadline was Dec 17th. After writing a note of pleading, explaining that having produced a film festival for four years I knew what stage of the process they were at, would they consider letting me send them my little 10 minute film. Now it didnt hurt that it has both a Tony Winner and a Grammy Winner involved with it, and, to my delight they said "yes..get it to us by January 21st". Which happens to be my bday, so I took that as a good sign. So Tribeca has it. If any of you know anyone on the BOD, I would welcome a name or a nudge. Though I think the film stands on its own, it never hurts to have a little help. What is so cool, is that it is now even better than when it was screened at the Library. Minor stuff but things that made my head ache when I watched it are gone, and sound things that made my ears hurt are gone. It may actually finally be done.!! no, wait, there is that one spot where she walks in with the tea tray that needs to be balanced to the left.......
On to submissions.!! |

Thanks Joan. I wish you could see it now. It is a whole new film. When it screens again, locally, I do hope you will be able to make it. I am fairly sure that the Garden State Film Festival will show it as the exec director wrote me a note saying..." I cant give you an official answer until all the films have been viewed..but unofficially I LOVED IT and feel it will probably be in." So its not exactly local at least it is in state. At the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park. So that, at least, is a classic venue. Fingers crossed. |

On January 19th 1964 Pascal Chmelar was born at 406 w. 20th street. On January 21st 1964 Duncan M. Rogers was born and lived at 410 West 20th street. My mother and his mother were best friends. Pascal has gone on to become a fine potter. He is one of only four people in America with a classic Japanese Anagama kiln that he built by himself up in Palenville NY. We were crib mates for the first few years of our lives and have stayed in touch at the important moments in our lives. Graduations, weddings, shows, and the like. Every December, until a little while ago, he held a show in his family's house at 406 w.20 and I would go buy something and we would smoke butts and catch up. Until I quit smoking and then harassed him to do it too. He has a brother and two sisters who are wonders in and of themselves, but it is Pascal with whom I have a special geographics be damned relationship. His mother and father Lubomir and Tiree Chmelar founded the Friends of Czech Greenways a not for profit devoted to to reach out to the international community and promote the Czech Greenways program and ecotourism along the Prague-Vienna Greenways. Lou would be asked to be the architect to help redesign Prague and return it to its pre-revolution splendor. Tiree was the General Secretary of the FCG and a beatiful, gracious loving woman. She and my mother were fast friends during my infancy with Pascal, and would often trade breaks for each other from the screaming infants. 40 years later, many of the same people live on west 20th street that lived there when I did, sharing a crib with Pascal. And Saturday night, last week after the screening of my film in the city, I got to pop in and say hello to the whole clan as they were celebrating Lou's 70th birthday at 406 W. 20th. He was in a Tux and magazine cover handsome. Healthy, vibrant, full of life and Tiree was resplendant in a gown, looking beautiful and beaming with pride at all the friends assembled for Lou's party. Tues/Wed night, on what was Pascal's 41st birthday Tiree was killed in a car/truck accident on her way to their country home called "candlestick". Stunned doesn't cover it. Angry isn't strong enough a word because she was so full of life. Saddened beyond words. And horrified that, if the Time it happened is the time we first heard that it happend, that my old cribmate will spend every birthday for the rest of his life remembering that this was the day his mom was killed, not the day he was born. I am so glad that the stars aligned for me to be at 527 west 21st to show the film and could stop at 406 west 20th to say hello to everyone. So, happily, my last memory of Tiree is that of a woman deeply in love with and terribly proud of her husband. Loving mother to 4 very successful children, A potter, a caterer with her own shop on 18th street, an exec at AT&T and a Stay at home mom carrying the volunteer torch for the next generation. The funeral is Sat at St. Lukes, across the street from where they lived. And, oddly enough, was run, at one time for many years, by the man who performed my marriage ceremony to Susan. And where Pascal and I would go bowling under the seminary whenever my mother would bring me back down to NYC to visit Tiree. She will be missed by many in NYC and most of Prague.

I gotcha. It does suck. I read the paper each day and feel like I read too many articles about accidents like this. I wonder about the families of the victims. My sympathies. |

Just before Christmas I taped a half hour program for our local cable stations called "Meet the Artists". I got a note today from the host that apparently my "episode" goes into rotation starting tonight. It will air Monday and Tuesday @ 9pm and Thursday @ 8pm It was Nancy Heins-Glaser's last show as host of the program and I was with Bennet Lieber who founded and produced the Goat Short Film Festival.
