Have you heard about a fabric called Crypton?
Unlike Sunbrella it is only for indoor use. Was developed for the healthcare industry and is available in many colors and patterns. It is virtually indestructable Google Crypton for details.

Ok, I picked chairs, made some custom changes (of course) lost the skirt but added nailheads so the end result will be something like this. chair

After anxiously awaiting, I got the price quote. Adding the down cushions and the nailheads, it makes the chairs a teensy bit more than I thought they would be.

Told husband and he flipped.

I just checked a bunch of websites, and after researching (even more than I already have) I do think the price is fair. Plus, we pay no shipping or sales tax.

We will get a huge storage ottoman to use as a coffee table. I'm sure it won't be free (that's the incentive at www.carolinachair.com) because I am making it larger, adding the storage feature and nailheads and swapping out the fabric, but it will still be less than retail.

I am sick of using an old steamer trunk as a coffee table! I LIKE eclecticism, but I don't want a haphazard mish mash of stuff.

I need to convince my husband this is the way to go.

Ideas... this will be my Hanukkah, Christmas and Birthday present?

Oops. Mohonk for my birthday weekend is my birthday present.

I'm all out of ideas, but I will figure something out. Maybe I'll tell him we can invite his family over if we get the furniture...

So, last night after I whispered a few sweet nothings into my husband's ear (waking him from sleep) I said "and when can I order my furniture..."

He said he'll never go ahead with it so I should just go ahead and order it. Now, do I take that out of context and "just order it?"

Meanwhile, through the dining room and into the office section of the family room...MY DESK IS FINALLY COMING! I have almost everything cleared out and tomorrow morning, my tall, dark and handsome desk will arrive.

Of course, this leads to the dining room. In the process of cleaning out the office, we moved a bookcase into the dining room. MAde me a realize a tall, narrow piece of furniture would look very good on each side flanking the archway to the living room. It never ends...

a. The desk is fantastic! Kind of makes me want to stop by and do my homework...not!

b. Even if Mr. VIG was talking semi-unconsciously, his words were REAL and you are entitled to purchase the chairs.

So I have been spending a lot of time trying to organize the house. Basically collecting things that belong in the office area but were scattered around.

Yesterday I managed to really make a dent. Maybe I've watched a few too many organizing shows, but I am being diligent (hope it will continue) to really keep things in a specific place. It is so overwleming when there is stuff everywhere.

My enthusiasm rubbed off onto my eldest yesterday. We took an old desk and put it in the office area near mine. She needs a place to do homework and not be too far away, like her room, nor too close like the dining room table. (Unfortunately, I don't have enough space at my desk right now for her.) Now we just have to paint it and put on new knobs and it should look great. She decorated an old bulletin board and set it up for herself.

Maybe we'll go to Ikea today to get organizing things.

It's things like this...when it really works you wonder why didn't we do it sooner. I guess it took a long time to figure out exactly how it should be positioned in the room, and a long time to say it's ok to spend a chunk of change on this to keep my sanity.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself...I hope this is the new organized me.

Yay! Yay! Yay!

Almost in time for the holidays...my living room furniture! It shipped yesterday and will probably be here in about 2 weeks. Oh well, won't have it for my family party next week, but at least I don't have to worry about anyone spilling red wine on it!

The company, which I love and I heard about from MOL's own David Buckley, is carolinachair.com. They sent me this photo of my furniture which I am thrilled to share...chairs

Uhm, yeah.

For a change (already! it's been 15 minutes!) I set it up as 2 loveseats. I think until we remove some things this will be better for traffic flow.

How did you train your black cat to avoid the white cushions? Looks like s/he is going right for the one that matches the fur!

VERY sharp looking room, I must say! Nice job.

P.S. - Are those picture frames empty or is it just the glare?

I didn't realize Sally & Neil were your contractors VIG. I've heard really good things about them. They did a friend's kitchen and he raved about them!

I heard from someone who knows them they were getting out of this business. True or false?
just an odd rumor?
I'd love to get a bid from them but I am 6 months - a year away from needing them

No, for "no you hadn't told me" and good luck because it's a big job!

Lilb, those aren't empty frames, they're assorted mirrors.

Ffof, I tried that, kind of like my first shot except the chairs straight and not on an angle. Wait, I tried it facing the fireplace (and baking the fireplace) not the other way. That's an option. I love it, I can play all day!!!

Eh, not so creative. I've collected a bunch over many years and have used all sizes in clusters all over the house, to fill blank walls and add a little whimsy.

Now I'd like to create a vignette over the mantle but I don't want to put a lot of holes in the wall, so I just have them propped. It really just laziness!

Now onto window treatments.

Whaddya think...we want to go cheap for a little while. I have pewter colored rods with star finials. Can I use them with basic cotton semi-sheers, or swags? I still want to keep all the light coming in.

I just want it to look crisp, simple and airy.

Somehow I imagine Pottery Barn or Spiegel will have something up your alley -- some handkerchief-y or gauzey sheer number. It's all very pretty!

Lord, even Target has some cool stuff online and in the store in the sheer cotton or linen vein! I was in there looking at valance stuff myself and saw quite a few things...

Looks nice. I like the picture with the four chairs separated around the ottoman. However, being a guy, I think having the chairs paired as loveseats is probably more practical from a traffic flow point of view.

This may be just my wierdness, but you need some circles and ovals in the room. Maybe an oval mirror over the mantle.

Ok I am chiming in here because Mrs. K never listens to me about decorating.

SOL, what you DON'T see is this huge (4x6ft) picture of Nostra Damus. I've had it for years. That, and one framed picture of the girls are all that are nailed in.

It's tough to compete with Nostra Damus and the girls!

Bob, I agree about something round. Initially the ottoman was supposed to be round, but then it couldn't be used for storage, so I went with square instead. (I should have made it a few inches smaller to accommodate for the corners, but it looks very dramatic which I like.) If I remove the credenza on the right, there will be more room to pass by. FWIW, my husband thinks it's too big for the room, but last night, sitting with our feet up, it felt really cozy and comfy. I'd also like to get 2 small round side tables, maybe metal, to use instead of the rustic little benches, but all in good time.

The toughest part is clearing stuff out. I need to toss a lot and we are space and storage challenged!

VIG, it looks beautiful, but I'm not sure if you're brave or just plain crazy getting white furniture with three kids and a black-haired cat!

My 2 cents: I like it arranged as two loveseats, seems less "symmetrical" to me. But then I tend to be a fan of asymmetry! And I agree about adding some round edges. What about a really nice round or oval tray on top of the ottoman so you can place drinks and such?

But then, you didn't ask, so feel free to just ignore me!

Me&, the furniture is made of sunbrella fabric, so I can use a soap & water to clean it. (I'm not that stupid!) It's also fade resistant. It's also not pure white, it does have a natural canvassy texture, but I know what you mean.

I would like to find a big round tray to put on top. Right now I have a small wooden one there.

I like symmetry, but in an imperfect way. I like the 2 loveseats but it definitely feels cozier with the 4 chairs. I'll probably switch a million times. Why not? I also think the rooms looks a little off balance with all the furniture on one side (from the entry view anyway).

The only problem is the little one likes to lie on the floor with pillows (from the other sofa) and watch tv (which is hidden to the right of the fireplace, in the bottom cabinet) and with the chair set-up she doesn't have much room. If I can get her to sit in the chair it would be ok, but she's a creature of habit.

If you have them flanking the fireplace as love seats (at right angles to the fireplace), then one little one could lie on the chairs to watch and the other could prop up pillows against the chairs on the floor. (I'm a symmetrical person)

I also like your "rustic" endtables. A mix of styles is nice (imo!)

Ffof, I got those benches at a yard sale on East Cedar YEARS ago. They are one of the pieces I move from room to room and my husband threatens to toss them, but they always serve some purpose. Thanks, I like an eclectic mix too.

I am going to put the loveseats the way you said to test it out.

Ack, it doesn't work. The 2 chairs look great on either side of the trunk, but then I can't do the opposite side the same way, the credenza is in the way and the chairs block the archway to the dining room too much. I could probably have them blocking the other archway somewhat (so they are facing the fireplace) but it's a little tight.

I have to continue to try and find another home for the contents of the credenza.

Ffof, it's all the way on the right, it's my only large expanse of wall. You can see it in the first picture, barely.

FREE CREDENZA! Anyone want it? I just about have it emptied and as much as I love it, we just don't have the right spot for it. Caveat is you have to pick it up by tomorrow morning, sooner if possible. It's 60 wide, 20 deep and 30 high. It's original purpose was probably in an office. It's black enameled metal with a woodgrain top and chrome harware and legs. Very simple, contemporary lines. TAKE IT BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND. Seriously! It offers 2 small drawers, 2 file drawers, and a double door opening with storage on 2 shelves. If no one responds here (my loyal readers) I will put it on regular MOL and then the classifieds. It's darn heavy but will fit in a wagon or van and I'll help load it into your car.

Pippi, you want it???
