This discussion kind of started in the Neelam thread. We are always on the lookout for good Indian places-we've found a few reliables, but are always open to trying new ones. We like: Raagini(Mountainside)-excellent north indian food, reasonably upscale dining area. Rasoi(Jersey City and Edison)-my wife loves malai kofta, and this place makes it very well. Good north indian food, so-so ambiance. Saravana Bhavan Dosa Hut(New York)-great dosas, especially if you like them spicy. Swagath(Edison)-Decent South Indian food-the best we've found in Edison/Iselin. Vatan(New York)-neat place, Gujarati thalis in (i guess) a village style setting. Anybody have any other recommended places? |

There is an Indian place on route 22 way past Raagini. I think it is called Veena. It is opposite the kids amusement park. They have very good Dosa. |

I like Begum Palace. It's in the shopping center on Route 124 in Madison that has the Staples store in it. |

We just tried Satish Restaurant in Montclair on Bloomfield avenue. It was decent. When I am in the mood for really good indian food, I go to Tamarind in Manhattan...Delicious |

Ate at Raagini recently for the first time. Really enjoyed it. |

Another vote for Tamarind. Definitely the best Indian I've ever had. I like Cafe Spice a lot as well (although it's obviously nowhere near in the same league). |

I've been walking by Cafe Spice everyday at lunch, maybe I'll try it. I'm just beginning to acquire a taste for Indian food. I've read that Moghul in Morristown is NJ's best. |

Algebra, If you like Mexican then Indian is definitely something up your alley. Have an Indian savvy friend take you to a lunchtime buffet. But, be aware the buffets often aren't as good as a dinner. My guess is they're trying to appeal to a broader audience. If you're leary of curries, give tandoori chicken a try. A good, juicy tandoori chicken is a wonderful thing. I remember my first experience with Indian food. I really expected a truly horrible experience, because I hated the smells of Indian food. I was converted on the spot. And now I love the smells of Indian food. |

Morrisa, I've been to the Ayurveda Cafe a few times. It sure is different! There is no menu. They bring you the food they're making that day. So simple and novel! And last time I was there, about four years ago, the meal price was about $10! |

I hated the smell of curry growing up. Then, when I first moved to NYC, I worked near Curry-in-a Hurry -- gag. Then I started trying Curried Shrimp Chowder, then Naan bread with curried veggies, the curry crab cakes -- I think I'm ready to take the plunge. There's a restaurant called bay Leaf on W 56th which looks to have a nice buffet lunch -- maybe I'll try it. Cafe Spice, on W 55, has indian lunch specials -- that may be a cheaper alternative. I try to eat CHEAP at lunch. |

Shaan on 48th st. off of 6th is one of the best around. Satish Palace in Montclair is not too bad. |
