Remember Frank who always makes the pizzas at the Roman Gourmet? He now has his own place. It used to be called Sunrise Pizza and is on Valley St.,SO - same side as Pathmark. I don't know the name and whether it's open yet. He will deliver. Frank really knows how to make pizza so it should be good.Have to drive by and check it out. |

Yeh! My family loves Frank! He has always treated my five-year well by talking to her and giving her a large slice. His pizzas are also good and always served w/ a smile. We'll definitely patronize his establishment. Thanks for the tip... |

Oh my! When did he leave Roman? I thought I saw him only last week. Did he buy Sunrise? It's been there for a while. |

Very excited to see another place that *delivers*! Keep us posted if you happen to see it open. I know pizza is very subjective...but we happen to love Roman Gourmet. I like it better than anything we had in Broolyn (and feel like we tried them all) |

Yes, I have been to Two Boots. I do like their pizza but Roman Gourmet is just the style I grew up with. Maybe its emotional, as when we looked for houses I was so charmed by the downtown and we would always stop at Roman Gourment when we were done to discuss what we saw. |

I'm with Georgie. I lived in NYC for years and the pizza in my neighborhood was bad. There is excellent pizza in NYC, but it meant a trip. I'm happy with the pizza in Maplewood. cwalk/AlleyGater, just curious, where's the best pizza in NYC, in your opinion?

I'm not a Pizza expert by any stretch of the imagination. I love Two Boots because it is fresh, different tasting and uses high quality ingredients. I know everyone thinks John's brick oven pizza is the bees knees (but doesn't do slices). I also like standard NYC style 'za (ala Pizzabox on Bleeker Street and scattered all over the city for that matter). Cheap and greasy is good sometimes. |

We walked by last night and the inside has been gutted for renovations however there was a notice on the door from the town to stop. Probably due to lack of permits. I cannot wait to have a great pizza place that I can walk to within 2 minutes! |

That is a shame. We'll be visiting fairly regularly so we'll still get to see his new place. David -- we're moving to Frisco, Texas, which is around 20-30 minutes north of Dallas. We decided some time ago to take advantage of the NJ real estate boom/bubble, cash out and buy a house outright down there. Our new home will be ready early next year; in the meantime we'll be apartment dwellers. Selling the snowblower was SWEET!

Spoke with Frank yesterday as he was setting up the place. He said that the health inspector was coming by this week and he hoped that the doors would be open by Wednesday. Let's cross our fingers and toes that everything goes ok and he'll open soon! btw...the place looked clean, wonderful and inviting. The menu looked good too! |

We just got back from Franks for dinner. Even though there were first night jitters, everything was great. It amazed me that not only was there a table of 7 but a steady stream of people coming in getting food. And they were delivering too boot. We'll be back as we cannot beat a 3 minute walk to our new pizza joint! |

I'm not sure if they will deliver at lunchtime. Give them a call to find out. I'll be honest that I never went to Roman Gourmet. I'm a Trat die hard however the convenience of Franks is hard to beat.

It's between the newly refurbished park and Pathmark. Yellow signage, and BIG sidewalk sign saying OPEN FOR BREAKFAST. Now, if only parking wasn't such a pain on Valley we would get there sooner than later! |

Breakfast at the pizza place? As in "Cold pizza for breakfast, warm coke to wash it down...ahh", one of my long time favorite Christine Lavin songs? What will they serve? Think I'll try the new place and then pass the info about it along to the South Mountain Y Kindergarten on Valley...their lunch offerings this term are pretty standard but on the expensive side (compared to last year)...worth considering as an alternative for next term. |

Michele -- not sure what you meant about lunch offerings, but both Jays Grille and Park Wood Diner deliver excellent food at lunchtime. (although it would not be as cheap as pizza) |

Stopped by Frank's Trattoria a little before noon today with my two very young kids for some slices. The folks there could not have been nicer - I was addressed as "Madam" which has to be a first for a pizzeria (and is oh so much better than Ma'am). Even though it's counter order, they brought the pizza to us at our table, didn't object that we had our own drinks with us (we had been at the playground, and you know you need your sippy cups at the playground) and were just extremely nice. The pizza was very good too. My finicky 3-year old ate his slice, part of mine, and part of his younger brother's, and wanted me to go get him another! I picked up their take-out menu which says they have free delivery. I wish them well and will definitely be back (and/or they'll be schlepping here).

Stopped by Franks. Guy was incredibly nice, place was clean, had a friendly vibe. However, my food was horrible. For some reason I ordered chicken fingers (I know, I know, it's a pizza place, but I was in a mood, and they were advertised on the wall). They were way overcooked, tasted like rubber, and came with fries that were barely cooked at all. Guess I should stick to pizza. |

Stopped by on Saturday. Had pizza and tossed salad. Both were good. Prices are right. I was impressed/surprised/puzzled by the breadth of the menu. I'm going to experiment - I hope the sausage and peppers sub is good, but I'm not surprised that one of the non-core items was underwhelming. Seems like he may be taking on a few too many dishes. |

Franks "Trattoria" is absolutely horrible. My family and me went in there the other day, and to our surprise, the place was disgusting. We walked in, and the tables were not clean, the floors were a mess, and the person making the pizzas was very intimidating. My son wanted to leave as soon as we arrived there when he laid eyes on the man making pizzas. He looked very unclean and unapproachable. There was NO PARKING anywhere yet we wanted to check the new place out, so we decided to stay. My husband and I ordered a pie, quite simple, half onion and mushroom. We had to go up and get the pie first of all, second, there was No service what so ever which is pretty ironic with the name Frank's "Trattoria” My husband and I started eating the pizza, and it was just disgusting. We figured it would live up to the standards the Roman Gourmet has, but we were very wrong. The onions and mushrooms were still cold when we started eating the pie, and It had a very bitter taste to it. Later that night, my son who also had a slice of the pie, was very sick and missed school the next morning. We also got another very simple order. French Fries and Chicken fingers. Well, the French Fries were still frozen, and the Chicken Fingers were over cooked. I was so appalled, I felt the strong need to Post a Comment, so everybody could be aware. I will be sticking with the BEST pizza around, the Roman Gourmet. }}} |

I am glad to read Diane Smith's criticism of Frank's Trattoria. It tells me to order carefully. But, Diane, do you have to "yell" it? I would also argue that, while Roman Gourmet's pizzas are good, they're far from the headline size font in Diane's posting. |

...As I posted, I had the chicken fingers and fries too, and mine turned out the same as Diane described. Will give the pizza a shot next time. This guy hasn't split the atom or anything though -- he opened a(nother) pizza shop in Maplewood/South Orange. The bar is reasonably high if you want to be something other than just another pizza shop in Maplewood/South Orange. |

Interesting Diane Smith comes on SUPER STRONG about how bad Frank's place is and then touts how great Roman Gourmet is...funny how Frank left Roman Gourmet to start his own place. While I was on my visit - which was inspired by this thread, I'd never been to Roman or ever seen or met Frank - a mother and young daughter came in. They knew Frank well and it was clear they had a strong affection for him. The place was busy and it was clear they were just getting started re: service. Nevertheless before we left Frank in a friendly manner said hello and asked how our food was - he insisted we be honest. We were pleased to report it was very good. I think Frank will work things out. Please ignore Diane Smith. Her motives are poor and it shows.

Did any of you see Diane's comments on the other threads below? How very telling, especially the one about Bunny's eggplant parm. Diane, I think your commets here on this thread are disgusting and malicious. Your first post on MOL screaming, spouting venom about a new business in town. Are you sure you aren't Tony or Giavonna, owners of the Roman Gormet? I'll just bet you are family.
