We had their General Tsao's chix the other night & it was so mealy, I thought maybe there was potato mixed in. I have ordered from there once before & it was fine. - Although, I didn't have their Gen.Tsao's. What are other people's opinions on B&H & if you're not crazy about the place, where do you order from (if you do at all?) |

We like B & H. Never had a problem. We do order from Ginger Taste in Millburn, and they deliver. Different type of food though. Nice change. |

I would consider them the best take out chinese I've had on this coast. That being said some nights are better than others. I also find their "trick" of putting filler in the bottom of containers annoying. You already pay an extra buck or two per entree, the last thing I want to find is 6 pieces of limp old broccoli on the bottom of my seasame chicken container. |

Our last B&H order was not up to prior standards either. We just figured they were having a bad day. Hmmmm.... |

I used to get take-out from B&H -- mostly because of convenience. But I find the food to be inconsistent. Some dishes are really delicious, and others contain that filler mentioned above. Also, many dishes are just too greasy. When I moved to town five years ago, B&H was always really, really good, no matter what we ordered. Don't know what exactly happened to change that. I like Ginger Taste in Millburn; good food, and they deliver. For really good food, I like Szechuan Village in Springfield. It's a bit more of a drive, but the food is really much better. |

I like B&Hs - I think it is one of the better take outs in the area. Places like Great Wall on SO Ave I find to be inedible.

I ordered a small container of shrimp fried rice last Thursday for lunch. My fried rice contained huge, burnt, and too numerous to count, pieces of onion. It wasn't very appetizing. I was so displeased I wanted to return it, but circumstances prevented me from doing so. |

Got B & H sesame chicken and general tso's chicken last nite and both were sub par. I like their lo mein, though.

I used to really like B&H, but the last three times it was not what it used to be. The last time was actually close to unedible. I had sesame beef and more then half of the container (no kidding here) were water chestnuts. And really only a few strips of meat. Unless they get their act back together, they are of my list. |

I go to B&H simply because it's a bit better than most in the area, but, by far, NOT the best Chinese I've ever had. |

I love Bill & Harry's, and it is definitely among the best Chinese takeout I've ever had. And I spend roughly $92,000 a year on Chinese takeout. One of my favorite dishes there is the General Tso's chicken, which I ask to be made with white meat. Also the people are incredibly friendly. Maybe I've just been lucky. Though we do eat there a lot -- I'd say at least thrice a month. I think Chinese food is highly subjective. Everyone can generally agree when it's vile, but "good" ends up being very much a matter of opinion. |

We love their Szechuan bean curd done extra spicy. Their fried rice however is too greasy, as is their lo mein, so we go for the cold sesame noodles instead. |

Where is Ginger Taste? Let's all list the dishes at Bill and Harry we like. My favorite is Shrimp in Spicy Tea Sauce. It's definitely not bland.

Too much MSG in the food. I am one of the unfortunate who is allergic to it. When I want good Asian, I go to Ginger Taste, or go up to Montreal for VIP or Yangtze (hit both last weekend, and they are sublime!). |

We haven't had a problem with B&H until last week. We ordered 5 entrees, one of which was sweet and sour pork. That dish was total garbage. The pieces must have been 2 days old an nuke just before they gave it to us. The other entrees were very good. But, 4 out of 5 isn't good enough at those prices. |

Ginger Taste is my new local favorite for Chinese/Asian takeout. Tom, it's in Millburn between Millburn Ave. and Essex Street, fairly shortly after the curve where Millburn Ave. becomes a one-way street. It's in a former IHOP, and the blue A-frame roof is hard to miss. You can pull into their lot from Essex street and leave the lot either from Essex or Millburn Ave. Very convenient. And they have Thai Ice Tea and bubble drinks, too. |

I remember ordering take out from B&H the week after returning from China and having an immediate urge to go back to China. The new takeout place in West Orange is my go-to place for emergency dining. It's in the same strip mall as Krauser's and RiteAid. |

Agree with cmontyburns. We love Bill & Harry's, and it is definitely among the best Chinese takeout around. We have been ordering from them for 10 years. We also order General Tso's chicken, all white meat. If they have had problems lately (which I haven't seen) someone should talk to them about it. The people are incredibly friendly and have been providing good food in Maplewood for years. They deserve to hear from you.

I have to ditto John's post about the limp broccoli in the sesame chicken! My husband and I have loved Bill & Harry's for the past 7 years and like the fact that we built a great neighborly repor with them. He calls it "fresh and honest" chinese food. I have to say, I love their scallion pancakes but sometimes they rush and burn them and that ticks me off somethin' fierce!..because I don't discover it until I get home! I have to try Tom's favorite Spicy Chicken and Tea sauce....sounds yummy! |

Flattery will get you everywhere, Pony. Everyone, please tell us all your favorite Chinese take-out dishes, from B&H or other nearby places. I think it does little good to say which place you like, because it seems that the quality varies from one dish to another.

I'm not sure they do take out, but we've found that the the best Chinese food around can be had at Cathay 22 on Rte. 22 in Springfield. Food is great plus nice ambience & extremely friendly staff. |

In my opinion Cathay 22 is head and shoulders above any place in this area. Pricier. Liquor license. Superb food. For take-off we go to Hunan Spring in Springfield. We like it lots more than B&H's and we're willing to take the drive to get the better food. |

Cathay is very good. We also like China Gourmet in WO and the Chinese menu at Joy Luck is fairly extensive. JJs used to offer some unique Beijing dishes, but their replacent has changed the menu to cater to sweet-toothed foreign devils. :-) |

Maybe someone should share this thread with B&H and let them know that they have a lot of customers who are in danger of becoming former customers due to unexpectedly reduced quality of their food in recent weeks. Anyone know the owners?

We've been going to B&H for years and have noticed a major decline in the past two months. My chicken with sesame sauce and shrimp with spicy tea sauce are mostly breading. In fact, the chicken dish had a couple of pieces with uncooked breading inside. Other dishes were tasteless and watery. Too bad. They were good. Are there new owners? New "chef"? |

The best chinese food that I've ever had in NJ is Mr. Chu's on Rt 10 West in East Hanover. Runner up is Cathay 22. B & H has slipped dramatically in recent years. I always found their food a bit bland, but at least it always seemed fresh. Now, the freshness factor seems to have gone by the wayside. You can get the same caliber food from Panda Kitchen or Hunan Wok on Springfield Ave-both of which are pretty icky, IMHO. |
