I heard that last week a new owner took over and now they will be closed for another month and a half for renovations. Just kidding, but I wouldn't be surprised. How many times can you renovate a place in two years?

Earliest they can open is Wednesday night. They still need to get some final inspections - the renovations should be completed by tomorrow.

ccm: It is at 19 Valley street (formerly Lot 15, although most remember it as stuft shirt). You can see it from the parking lot on Sloan Street opposite the S. Orange train station. It will be a restaurant with a bar. Downstairs will be a tapas (small plate) bar. They are expecting to open tomorrow night, but I do not have a confirmation as of yet. |

Nora, There are more minors in SO that are minors who are students at SHU...you know that, right? And actually once January comes around, there are no minors at SHU because all the freshman will have turned 18, except for a handful. If you mean "those under 21" as opposed to minors...the fact still remains that those who purchase and get served (who are under 21) aren't just from Seton Hall. Believe it or not, there ARE high school students who get away with it, and not all of them are from SO or Maplewood. Either way, it is a problem, no matter who is purchasing illegally. An initiative that the VLC is supporting, along with the Assistant Dean for Community Standards/Greek Leadership in our Department of Community Development, is to work with local bars/liquor establishments in South Orange (for free) with a few goals in mind: 1. Encouraging them to start at the bottom and just ASK FOR ID! 2. Educating them on IDs and catching the fake ones and lastly... 3. Establishing a "Designated Driver" program where the DD is identified and is allowed to be in the bar, but not allowed to drink. Some programs even allow that DD to have free sodas while they are there to support the person's choice to be safe. Brian and I will let you know how that program is coming along. If you know of anything similar or have any suggestions, let us know. I hope the businesses will be willing to participate! Kristen |

I just left the Village Cellar. It looks GREAT! They will be opening tomorrow night at 7PM (soft opening). There will also be a Beaujolais Noveau tasting. The menu looks fantastic. This will be a real gem for this area. |

Actually Kristen a minor is someone under legal age but you know that, right? 18 is the voting age or the age in which a person can enter into full adult legal right (EX filling out a will or a contract). In a few state 19 is still the legal age however you are still considered a minor in all states when it comes to purchasing or consuming alcohol |

So when you're tried in court as an adult at age 18, 19 or 20, you're still a minor? Or when men are required to register with the military on their 18th birthday, they're minors? ...? I know the technicality of the term is a fine line and I believe it differs from state to state. Either way, that statement is still correct, there are more minors in the town of South Orange, than there are at Seton Hall. It was just interesting that Nora went out of her way to randomly bring SHU into the convo... |

Village Cellar opened last night! The whole restaurant was packed-the bar, the great lounge area and the tables. We all loved the food. The place was buzzing all night (we were their for over 4 hours)and all the talk in the restaurant was very positive. This will quickly become a community favorite for ambience, great food, and a cool bar scene. |

I'll give first review by someone who doesn't have the connections for a pre-opening visit! We were there on opening night...the food was excellent, and the wine-by-the-glass that we tried very good. For the curious, I had lovely seared tuna with a roasted red pepper risotto, caponata and a balsamic glaze; the spouse had the filet with grilled onion and frites. The little one had chicken fingers and fries (same frites). Both adult entrees were around $25. We drank the more expensive of the merlots by the glass ($9). The service was slow, but given the unexpected full house on opening night, not unreasonable. I don't go on opening night expecting perfection (some tables seemed a bit frustrated)! The waiter and staff were attentive, and apologetic about delays (and comped us another glass of wine due to the wait). My first impression is that this is a class act, and will be another good place to go when we want to pay for a good meal out. I'm hoping that when it opens the tapas bar will be good for more casual and less-expensive evenings out. Looking forward to our second visit. Welcome to town. |

I have to agree, this looks like a winner... Classy, classy, classy... I dropped in tonight after our Rotary meeting, and had a chance to talk briefly with Franco and his partner. They did a beautiful job remodeling and I'm looking forward to going back for dinner. I recommend if you get a chance, drop in and say hello, you'll be glad you did.... |

Hot Gossip: Seen mingling amongst the swanky diners at The Village Cellar last evening was a gentleman introducing himself as Art Shamsky. Purportedly the newest partner involved in that excellent new eatery, he claims seven years of Village residency, and he gracefully sauntered from table to table exchanging greetings and chummy chitchat with cogniscenti and hoy polloy alike. A most amiable and self-effacing fellow, smilingly acknowledging compliments and well-wishes from his patrons (including the ever-dapper Mr. Ajc, accompanied by a stunning blonde woman clearly smitten with the food, or perhaps just the company...), Mr. Shamsky is nonetheless the subject of intense conjecture among long-toothed fans of the New York Metropolitans here in Boca. You see, there seems to be some question as to which Art Shamsky was charming diners at the Village Cellar last night:

FYI, rumor has it wrong; the newest partner’s first name is Patrick... If Art Shamsky has an interest in this excellent new eatery, it’s certainly a well-kept secret. Meanwhile, IMHO, Franco, and Jockamo have chosen well with their new partner Patrick, who by coincident also happens to be a local resident for about seven years. BTW, I’m pleased to see the Oracle is a perceptive man with good taste in eateries and attractive women. Happily, that stunning blonde woman was my wife, and you correctly recognized her fixation to both the food and the company… And, please inform your New York Metropolitans friends in Boca, I will be happy to up date them should I learn more of this mystery man passing himself off as a fourth partner...

I popped in today to take a look at the menu & was amazed at the transformation. The main Dining Room is HUGE! The place and menu looks very nice. The overall ambience reminded me very much of Voro. Although, with the huge number of tables & fairly high prices, I do hope it can succeed. I will be back soon to give the food a try. |

Husband and I were thinking about going there but were a little put off by the signs on the doors announcing "collared shirts required." is this strictly enforced? my husband does not wear a collared shirt and tie to work...instead a nice sweater, etc....we would like to stop in after work one night, but not if we have to go home first and put on collared shirts....please clarify if they really "require" a collared shirt???? much appreciated... |

this is a tough one though. they probably want to dissuade people from coming in football jerseys and shorts and sandals, but saying collared shirt is a little restrictive. |
