I need to buy some really high end coffee for a gift. Looking for whole bean by the pound. Usually go into the city and go to McNultey's -- but don't think I can get there in time. Is there any place local? DOn't want DD or Green Mountain stuff - good but will not impress the giftee. Also Village Coffe is not an option. I go there only under duress.

Thanks.

TM Ward in Chatham may have a better selection. Its off of Main Street near the center of town.

Beans on Church Street in Montclair has some of the best coffee I've ever tasted as well as an excellent selection of teas and high-end munchies.

Fairway and Zabar's charge about $6 a pound for top-notch coffee. Elsewhere, I find myself paying about $13 a pound. Can I do better than that locally? I don't get into NYC often any more.

Yesterday, I ordered some Zabar's coffee online, for my first time. Let's see how that works out...

My husband is a coffee freak.

He has every gadget known to man.

We only buy Illy - our thought: The Italians do it right.

It is the smoothest cup of coffee and/or espresso.
Whole Foods sells it or check out www.illyusa.com for gift ideas.

Also as a side note, we moved here from Brooklyn Heights but will be travelling back to get some of Jacque Torres' Hot Chocolate in DUMBO. It is pure heaven! Please try to the spicy kind:
www.jacquestorres.com
And of course, his chocolates are amazing!

The favorite in our house is Peets Coffee, which you can have shipped from Berkeley,CA.

Dark roast fans will love the French Roast, while the Italian Roast is great for expresso machines. You can order whole bean or ground to your specs. This time of year they usually offer a holiday blend which is also wonderful.

They also have a large selection of teas, and their food offerings (especially the chocolate covered dry fruit) are wonderful.

check them out at: http://www.peets.com/shop/shop.asp

We love Peets, too. You can buy a couple of varieties at Whole Foods.

we get our espresso roast at Whole Foods and at Trader Joe's (TJ's is MUCH cheaper - $4 instead of $10).

it was a lot of dough to shell out for an automatic espresso maker. but you know what, it was worth every penny. every single morning, I just LOVE my latte.

www.cafealtura.com Cafe Altura is some of the best ORGANIC coffees at good prices. The dark roast decaf is really good! Call them rather than order on line and you can get a five pound bag of whole beans at a discount price.

Popo, the Peets at Whole Foods is not the true Grail. Been sitting around too long or something.

Basically, to get the real thing, esp. the French roast, you have to order it from Berkeley. We haven't consumed anything else in...jeez, I think it's more than a decade now.

For chocolate truffles and etc., the source to end all sources is Dilletante Chocolates in Seattle. Very small shop, proprietors descended from Russian chocolatiers to the Czars or something.

There's no website. You just have to call them. Try: (206) 728-9144.

Tom, you CANNOT get good coffee for $6/lb. Anything at that price is either a very low-grade arabica bean or, more likely, the crapola robusta beans that constitute most supermarket coffees. Robust beans simply make for lousy coffee.

If you want a real high-quality coffee, you're gonna have to spend at least $8 and probably $10+ per pound.

I was thinking the same thing after seeing the $5.98/lb for Blue Mountain "Style". It's either coming from jamaica or not. There's no "style".

Trader Joe, Trader Shmoe - at that price they are, at best, the very lowest quality arabica beans (Arabica beans are the kind you want ... Robusta beans are good for cat-litter). If you want GOOD quality beans, expect to pay $8-$15/lb

FWIW, the coffee market, especially in Brazil, has collapsed over the last few years, because Vietnam is dumping huge amount of Robusta beans on the market at VERY low prices - General Foods, Kraft, et al. love that! So when you buy your Maxwell House at $4 for a 12 oz can, you're getting coffee that not only is extremely poor quality, but you're paying about 10 times what it's worth. As an added bonus, the collapse of the coffee market in South America has also exacerbated the problem of rain forest destruction, and encouraged farmers that used to make a good living from coffee to switch over to growing coca.

Trader's was the worst coffee I've bought in a store. (However, I like the store a lot for other items.) Lately I've been enjoying Gevalia Kona.
