From BBC Online:
quote:The US Supreme Court has allowed the Bush administration to keep secret the names and other basic details of terror suspects it has detained... Between 800 and 1,100 people were detained after 9/11, but about 515 of them were later deported, according to Kate Martin, director of the Washington-based Center for National Security Studies (CNSS)... The CNSS sued to learn the names and other basic information about the detainees. But the US federal appeals court said last June such information would play into the hands of terrorist groups and ruled the details should be kept secret.
The security argument is completely bogus, since it's obvious that any genuine terrorists among the detainees would have been missed by their organizations, who would of course look for any source of betrayal. Presumably there has been some clumsy attempt to turn some of the detainees into double agents, who might be exposed if others arrested in the sweep were able to tell their stories. If you have a friend that you haven't seen for a while, give them a call to make sure they are still free.

Forget about it. Democracy ain't what it used to be. There was a time when I thought certain things, like political speech and jury trials, were permanent features of our country, that we had fought for and earned for keeps. But sometimes I guess they go away. If I were a democratic candidate, I'd run on nothing less than restoring citizens' rights. Yes, it's like something out of Argentina, isn't it? And if it goes much further, people who protest in the "wrong" area might simply disappear. Anyone who values democracy should find this deeply frightening.

Um, these are terror suspects, not even US citizens, so let the experts do their work. They're not giving out their little terrorist names? So what? They're lucky we didn't cut their b*lls off.

Mem: You hate France after a time of exile there; you believe in sharia-type justice (an eye for an eye, a testicle for a testicle)--wait, are you a radical Shiite cleric? |

Mem- whose this "we"? Are you accustomed to inflicting physical torture? Or is this armchair torture? We are F'ed. Mem is learning how to torture "our" enemies in her garage. She's a "real" American. |

Under the present system, the Administration is free to designate anyone as a terrorist. Imagine how you would feel if a foreign government secretly imprisoned American visitors.

Yeah, but we don't need them old safeguards anymore, because now the "right" folks are in charge, and they would never abuse their power. So Montagnard I suggest you just watch yourself. |

Even tho I abhor Bush and his crew, I think the war on terrorism should be mostly covert. Maybe I watched too many 007 movies as a kid (Connery versions) but this is not a traditional war or enemy. I realize this goes against a lot of what I believe but terrorist cells have infiltrated the globe, and they are not going to play by any sort of traditional military rules. Unfortunately, Bush is the one in charge and I think he has proven he has ulterior motives, especially in Iraq. |
