Soorlady--
Good points about help around the house.
Maintenance free condo living seems better suited to modern schedules.
Thankfully Maplewood/South Orange are still blessed with some people who stay at home/go outside into the yard occasionally.

Call me crazy, but when I find that in one breath I'm criticising every vinyl window owner in town and in the next telling everyone how blessed I am to have them as neighbors, I've probably forgotten my meds.

I have to say I'm glad virgilian is bringing this up, even if it seems extreme to most. This is a beatiful town and she (I think she...) is very well intended. COnstruction is not bad inherently, but using sub-standard materials may be. Unfortunately most people don't set priorities in such a way when buying a house; they think "wow, new windows...". Personally I'd never use vinly, alum, etc. or those "snap on grids", nor would I buy a house with them, but there is a market. However, if the same house is rebuilt with superior products, a different market with more money or higher buidilng standards will pay the up-charge for sure.

VIrgillian are you on any committees in town, ie village alliance where you can actually have a say about such things?

I can't divulge such secrets. I hide behind the anonymity of this forum so that I can spew vitriol whenever I see a house being ruined.

Gemini, i don't think there's a market like that for homes in maplewood. However, many people - like myself - want to live in maplewood, and if there's a great house in a great location for sale that happens to have vinyl siding so be it....I'll get to replacing that later when i have the money. I hate the look of it as much as you and virgilian, but don't make me feel like Hester Prynne.

Is there an Architectural Review Board in Town?
Just curious.

What type of things do they review/approve?

Additions? Signage for stores downtown?

Okay, virgilian's rant is cute, but what I hate more is BAD COLOR CHOICE! Why do people use purple trim? or how about black raspberry ice cream color? (I won't mention locations to protect the innocent!) Now mind you, fresh paint is better than chipped peeling paint(in fact, I'm sure my neighbors must be talking about our flaky, dirty facade), but please, call me first before you use some hideous color. Oh, and how about that one Benj Moore color people use thinking that it is beige? It's flesh! Yuck!

Virgillian you are like a madly tedious snob. Go get some work out of the house and mind your own goddam business. If you like your garden so much go lie down under it for a while.

JG, the Township set up an historical preservation committee a couple of years ago. They have the power to designate buildings as historical over the protest of the owner. Since there are no benefits, like tax advantages, to being designated I don't think there has been a lot of activity for voluntary designations. I haven't heard of any involuntary ones either.

IMHO the architectual merit of Maplewood doesn't rest with individual homes for the most part, but with numerous very nicely preserved streets, windows and vinyl siding to the contrary.

virgilian,

"MANY HOUSES ARE BETTER LEFT TO THOSE FINANCIALLY ABLE TO MAINTIN THEM." ???

That's a pretty “classest” blanket statement you make. What are you saying? That if someone can afford an old house in Maplewood, but can't afford to maintain it to your exacting standards, don't bother?

I have to wonder if you are for real? I'm also wondering why are we all wasting our time responding to this ridiculous thread. Hey, I like the look of a well-maintained house as much as anyone, but I'm not arrogant (or classest) enough to suggest imposing my will on what type of building materials my neighbors should use. Especially if I don't even know if they can afford them!

Crappy old woodframe houses were not built to last forever anyway. My floors roll like the sea. I need a lifeline to get up the swells. Maybe I'll go home and put photogray, star-shaped windows in just to annoy people.

Virgilian is rude, judgemental and anal. If Virgilian were in the market for an old house, I would refuse to sell him mine, in which I have lived for more than 30 years, and which has been updated with three new bathrooms, new kitchen, deck, all new wiring, all new plumbing, new boiler, and all new Tru-Thermal windows (vinyl). We retain the beautiful wood floors and the original siding. But everything that didn't work has been replaced. And will continue to be replaced. And my neighbors do the same with their houses--and no one has ever complained. Virgilian has a lot of nerve passing judgement on others.

Marian, that's exactly what I said and what I meant.
Thanks for underscoring the point. No, you put it in boldface. Thanks for emboldening my provocative statement.
If you, Marian, buy the house next door to me, I surely hope you shoulder the cost of taking care of it. That's all I mean. My neighborhood doesn't look completely like Union yet.
If it's classist, it's classist. It's why I wanted a high quality house amongst neighbors willing to keep up thier houses. Banish me.

What in the world do you mean by characterizing me this way?
Anal?
Pretty disgusting for this forum--explain what you mean please.

Virgilian -- Lizziecat was charactarizing you as anal retentive.

By definition, being anal retentive means a person exhibits compulsive cleanliness, orderliness, or fussiness.

or, according to the 'urban dictionary':

anal retentive - To be a prick and make everyone want to beat the dog crap out of you.
