Every week I read the News Record, I cannot believe how many cars are stolen or broken into in Maplewood. Being that I had a car already stolen out of my driveway and another attempt, I'm ready to take action. I'm considering boobie trapping my driveway to fire a 12 gauge shotgun at at anyone who steps on my driveway. I'll mop up the level of guilt later. (That also goes for all dog owners that leave turds on my lawn.) Has anyone tried this? Maybe a barbed wire fence along Irvington avenue would do the trick. Any suggestions?

The problem most likely is South Orange residents coming to Maplewood and stealing cars.

I had a car stolen out of my driveway eleven years ago, and I haven't been home since.

Tom,

My cars can't be stolen from my driveway because we have a 3 car garage so I'm able to park my 3 vehicles inside behind a locked door.

Mike, I feel your pain, but is life at Rahway worth it? :-)

Straw, if you have a three car garage how come your wife is always complaining that her car gets left in the street?

I recall that, according to some official Federal statistic, Newark has the highest rate of auto theft in the country. Maplewood is next door. You can work out the rest.

Our son's car was stolen from our driveway a few years ago. According to the paperwork, Newark police found it 1/2 hour before we reported it stolen - still took 4 days (and $$ for the impound) to get it back!!

If you want to stop burglaries, let the public arm themselves. Only takes 2 or 3 dead perps and you'll see a rapid decline.

Unfortunately CJC you will end up in jail. You can't shoot someone for stealing your car - no one's life is being threatened. Now on the other hand if they try to run you down.....

"Maybe a barbed wire fence along Irvington avenue would do the trick. Any suggestions?"

Fences that close off the back of your property will go along way to help protect your home.

However, barbed wire on the fence is not esthetically correct. There’s a much better way to catch a thief when you don't have children or pets running around your yard.

If you really want to nail these criminals, use the DNA collector system. Just place a row of boards with nails sticking up along the inside base of the fence. If they make the mistake of jumping over the fence to rob you, chances are you’ll stop them right in their tracks...

I was referring to forced entry into a home. Sorry, I didn't make that clear.

There's actually a movie dedicated to the high auto theft rate in Newark and its surrounding areas. I think the title was "New Jersey Drive", might be wrong.}
