People who walk in the street when there is a perfectly good side walk right next to them to walk on. For example, Kendal Ave.

It's not quite a pet peeve, but I wish pedestrians would realize that on our dimly-lit streets, after dark, it is hard to see someone in dark clothing who steps out suddenly to cross a street. I will certainly stop for a pedestrian, but I have to see them first! The other night someone wearing a long dark coat stepped out from the shadow of a tree to cross one of our busier streets, and I didn't see him (her?) until they were well into the street. A light-colored scarf or gloves would have made them much easier to see.

And if they were more visible, perhaps more cars would stop to let them cross, because they would see them in enough time to safely stop for the pedestrians.

If we have to have dim and atmospheric street lighting, pedestrians should be aware that it's hard to see them after dark.

(And, no, I wasn't talking on a cell phone, or fixing my makeup, or eating at the time - I was concentrating on driving, yet neither I nor my frontseat passenger saw them until they were practically in front of us.)

Sidewalks that are in disrepair and covered with ice that force us to walk in the street.

cody, I really agree! Driving slowly down Maplewood Avenue at evening commute time, is scarey. Have to use the high beams given all that black/navy clothes.

vor, I think it's the cuteness and promotion of specialness factor. Lots of towns with older houses have sun rooms, but don't feel obliged to call them "Kingston" rooms, or "Newberry Port"rooms.

People who have divided Maplewood into the "East side" and the "West side." We are not New York for God's sake! I have lived here 29 years and never heard that drivel until the reval rolled around.
Also, people who race around town in their SUVs in the middle of the street, paying no heed to on-coming cars. They like their half in the middle.

Ditto on the "bow wow movements." It's even more disgusting in the snow.

Nothing worse than somebody backing up traffic on Maplewood Ave waiting for a parking space. Last Saturday there was a jam up practically back to Beach St.

How about people who call the toilet in their basement a "Maplewood bathroom?"

People who speed down Maplewood Avenue in the middle of town, zoom around the parking lot across from the theatre and take offense when I scream at them.

People who jog in the road on Ridgewood when the sidewalks are perfectly fine, making drivers swerve into oncoming traffic.

People who make wide turns on Glen ave and almost run me off the road.

Personal attackers on MOL (am I being a hypocrite?)

People from other towns using all the Maplewood parking spaces so I'm late for my hair appointment.

People who zoom down ANY road in Maplewood.

Emmie:

I agree with you. This is far too small a town to divide it self up further -- and for no good reason.

Also:

People who complain about the high taxes but aren't willing to work to keep those taxes at the same level or lower them.

Ditto people who complain about the schools and expect someone else to work to improve them.

Gemini-I'm one of the guilty parties jogging on Ridgewood. The problem is Jogging on sidewalk cement does a lot more damage to your knee's then jogging on asphalt. If I see a lot of two way traffic , I will (temporarily) go up on the sidewalk. The problem is most people who start honking their horn and giving you the finger are are going way over the 25mph limit and don't want to slow down for anything.

The one suggestion I would make to joggers, on Ridgewood and elsewhere, who job in the dark or half light is to sew those reflective stripes on their clothes. Just because you can see cars headlights doesn't mean they can see you, especially when there is somebody coming in the opposite direction in their xenon headlight equipted SUV with high beams blazing.

Ukealalio is right about sidewalks -- they are very hard on a runner's knees. But Ridgewood is a terribly unsafe place to run (or bike)...which is why I go up to Wyoming, where there is plenty of shoulder.
