On Tuesday, a deer was attacked by wild dogs, and dragged across Wyoming Avenue, into a backyard on Euclid Avenue, where they continued to tear the poor thing apart. Upon calling animal control, neighbors and residents (who thought this was the work of the dog that had killed a dog and attacked an owner on Durand) were told that this was the work of dogs that have been loose in South Orange. The deer was ripped apart very badly -- stomach, legs, etc. They advised us, and I, in turn, advise you -- If you have any animals that go outside, even if just occasionally -- KEEP THEM INSIDE! When you walk your dog, be careful -- and if you let your dog run around in the backyard, tied to a line or whatever -- don't close the door -- STAY OUT THERE WITH THEM WHILE THEY'RE DOING THEIR BUSINESS! I hope everyone and their animals are ok, and as soon as I know anything else, I will inform you. |

I have seen two dogs @ the edge of the Reservation , one black the other tan, Lab like dogs. I have a dog myself , coming back from a walk the two of them were near my back yard , my dog while on a lead , made a half hearted run @ them , they didn't even flinch . I brought my dog inside & observed the two . They have no collars on , seem fearless & on the hunt . I would agree that they seem to be a menace to the area . The Wyoming Av & Euclid Av locations put these two dogs close to were I saw them. Thanks flugermongers. |

Jet, those are the dogs. If you see them, please contact the MPD. Please do not label these dogs as killer dogs, Rumormongers - er Flugermongers. The dogs did not kill that deer. The Maplewood Police officer's fourth bullet is what killed that deer. Besides, the deer started the whole misunderstanding. Called the two canines "Sons of Bitches". |

Jet - if you see the dogs again you should give the Maplewood police or animal control a call. Here's a copy of the e-mail I sent out to our block association after the attack: Today there were two feral dogs on Euclid Avenue who killed a full-grown deer (body will be picked up tomorrow from the street). The dogs ran up Warner Road towards the reservation after they were chased off. One dog is all black and resembles a Black Lab, the other dog is dark tan and looks like a stocky pit bull. I spoke to the animal control officer and Robert Roe, the health officer, who told me these dogs have killed at least one other deer in the past week in South Orange but so far have escaped capture. If anyone sees these dogs DO NOT approach them, walk away and report them to the Maplewood Police (973)762-3400 or Animal Control (973)762-8120. It's probably a good idea not to leave your dogs tied up in your back yard until these dogs are captured. I would be cautious walking up in the reservation with children or pets as well. These dogs aren't a threat to panic about, but a little extra care should be taken as long as they are hungry, scared and possibly running around our neighborhood. I hope they're long gone by now and on their way to black bear country, but if not, be careful out there. Lydia

Late last year dogs fitting a similar description took down and killed a buck in my neighbors yard which borders the quarry in South Orange. My neighbor reported it to SO animal control. There have also been at least two reports of dogs feeding on deer carcasses in the Newstead area. |

A few weeks ago the S.O. police distributed letters to residents in the area of the Reservation advising of the dogs described in the above posts. The instructions were to call the S.O. police if the dogs were sighted. |

Lydia is a lot more clued in to local politics than I am, but if I see the dogs I am going to dial 911 since they are a clear and present danger to people and domestic pets. |

Aquaman, I'm not a rumour-monger -- I SAW IT. The dogs ripped the insides out of that poor thing. I'm an animal activist, but these dogs need to be caught. I don't care to start a fight with you, or any of the other people here on MOL who derive pleasure from instigating -- the issue here is the safety of our neighbors, both human and other. If these dogs are spotted, even if they're not doing anything -- call the police right away. They have killed at least twice -- they are a danger. They need to be located. I'm wishing there was a different way to handle it, like rehabilitating them or something -- I'm not sure if something like that is possible? Please tell people about this -- through word-of-mouth, email, etc. It's important that people are informed -- remember that not everyone in Maplewood signs onto MOL. Hopefully we can get this into the News Record (as an article, or just as a warning). Be careful, good luck, and thanks for being good neighbors! --Flugermongers |

This appears to have been going on for awhile. When I told my wife about this thread so she could warn a friend who walks her dog in the Reservation almost every morning, Mrs. K reminded me that she had seen two dogs meeting the descriptions above feasting on a deer at the sports field next to the Millburn Library on Glen Avenue about two months ago. |

Fluger - while the dogs may pose a threat to residents and pets - your alarmist tone doesn't help matters. Just the facts please - 2 hungry, wild dogs have attacked some deer (which is what hungry wild carnivores DO BTW). What makes this story interesting is that the wild animals look like house pets. |

Mentioned at the beginning of the thread is that they attacked and killed a dog and injured its owner. Anyone know anything more about this? Or is this urban (suburban?) legend? Because feral dogs can be dangerous to humans and pets so far I have avoided their obvious skill in culling the deer herd. |

Those dogs are actually specially trained Sbenois Harvester Pups and are vital in the process of getting those steaming hot Yumsters to your table. They have transistors in their heads that are tied into police frequencies, so don't even bother trying to stop them. dr stefano |

Deer Dog Doctor Stefano, Before I post again in support of where to build the towns new police headquarters, (see New police station? thread) do you think the police frequencies in their heads will reach the Verizon building? |

5{rmonger has her facts jumbled a bit - These are not the dogs that attacked their owner - there were other dogs (pet dogs, chained and penned) that were fighting last year, the owner got in the middle and was injured and the dog was eventually put down by the owner. There was an episode where a dog escaped and mortally wounded a smaller dog too, but these dogs have nothing to do with the feral dogs. I really wish Flugermongers (my neighbor) had discussed this with me before posting on MOL. The dogs attacked a deer, the police put the deer down in my backyard, no one saw the actual attack, we all saw the aftermath. |

Does anyone know what time the dogs attacked the deer? Morning? Evening? Daytime? |

This deer had to be hurt already right? Two former house pets can't be smart enought to take down a healthy deer. |

These dogs are just trying to survive. Two hungry dogs, former pets or not, can certainly let instinct take over and hunt deer or any other available food source. From the above posts, it sounds as if these dogs could pose a threat to animals wandering loose in their hunting territory whom they judge weak enough for them to take down. |

I don’t doubt that they’re dangerous, and would go after house pets and possibly people. Two hungry dogs will do what they have to do. But a deer is a big, swift animal. It takes packs of wolfs to bring these things down, hunters with rifles have a hard time. Have you ever come face to face with a deer? Seriously this is a big animal. My guess would be that the deer was hit by a car or seriously malnourished.

Remember a lot of deer in the Res are small and malnourished, although the relatively few I have seen around our house this year looked a lot healthier and larger than in the past. I am reasonably certain that one wolf can take down a deer, although I read that coyotes (about the size of a medium dog) have to hunt in packs and normally prey on the sick and the lame. Hunting is an instinct dogs have. It isn't a learned behavior like rolling over or walking on a leash for that matter.
