It pleases me to announce that Greenetree and The Spouse, after 14.5 years of marriage, will soon be married in San Francisco.

We had always intended to do this as soon as it would benefit us legally. We are, after all, in a committed marriage already, just lacking the legal protections, benefits and responsibilities that come with that status.

It was never important to us to do it, until last week. The act of a sitting president calling for a constitutional amendment to institute discrimination made it very, very important.

We would love to invite you all (well, not all of you, but the virtual uninvited probably know who they are and why), but we can't.

We are both very excited. Even though it started out as a political act, I cannot tell you how much this means to both of us, spiritually and emotionally.

When we take our vows, it will be in honor of all our brothers and sisters here at home who don't have the luxury of jumping on a plane and going across country so that they can be treated as equal citizens.

I look forward to the day when we can all marry the person to whom we chose to commit our lives, in a ceremony that is legally and spiritually binding.

That's wonderful news, Greenetree! Congratulations!

I wonder if NJM will recognize this and issue a joint homeowner's policy?

Mazeltov to both of you. Funny how a political act can turn into an act of the heart, and I mean that as a good thing.

When's the happy day?

What protection will this provide, I did not think that NJ or the Federal Gov had to our would recognize this.

excellent news.

Politicizing the constitution for votes by "supporting" an absurd amendment that W. knows would never pass anyway is abominable.
Glad this drove you to a win-win-win situation.
Have a great trip.

Sylad- it won't provide any. I think TPP put it best - "it's a political act that has turned into an act of the heart".

Just being able to walk into a government office, take out a license and be married by someone authorized to do so is something that gay couples have never before been able to do. We thought about New Paltz, but the waiting list is long & has no estimated timeframe.

Thank you, all, for the good wishes. And it gives us an excuse to shop for jewelry !

Warmest congratulations! All the best to both of you. Saying the words "I do" may seem like a small thing, but it is the most important thing two people who love each other can ever do.

While this time in history is scary in many ways, some good things are happening.

Greentree:

Wishing you and the spouse the greatest of happiness. It's wonderful that things have progressed to the point (at least in SF) where you can both stand up together in a marriage ceremony and affirm your love for one another. Hopefully, the rest of the world won't be far behind in recognizing the depth of commitment same sex couples can have for each other.

I'm using my 6500th post to say, "congratulations!".

I also heard on the radio another NY mayor (Nyack, I think) is also going to be performing ceremonies.
