Straw, I'm usually fairly mild mannered but you are pushing all the right buttons with me. A lot of people have worked very hard at improving SA and the results are obvious. There are more inquiries about property there than you could shake even your rather tiny stick at. People with a great deal more intelligence than you (that actually includes most of the civilized world) know what is happening with the redevelopment and the progress being made. However, given the fact that you obviously have a very large and unsightly chip on your shoulder, I am graciously volunteering to knock it right the heck off for you at your earliest convenience. |

Jet, I live in Maplewood too, and SA is a disgrace. When Jerry and Vic try and run again all the opposition will have to do is point to SA, and say see??? You see, what these guys did??? And that will be the end of their careers in politics. You see let me explain something to you, Jet. I loved Maplewood too, until people like you with no business sense decided you knew how to spend my tax dollar. Now, I pay more taxes then just about anyone I know, and it will only go up as SA, proves to be the gigantic failure that it is. Let me give you some more advice, Jet. Bill Parcells likes to say, "no metals for trying", and its a belief I believe to be correct. In other words honey dear, You came, you tried, and you failed..And you know who I am?? I'm a god damn tax payer..that's who I am.. So you want me to shut up about how my money is being spent?? YOU HAVE SOME GOD DAMN NERVE! |

This is too funny. I love good fiction when I read it. Keep posting Straw, you make my day with your rants. Advise, if you don't like it move. I know several places where the taxes are lower. BTW...you think the current Democrates are going to do any better? |

SA, Humm. Well my spouse and I liked what we saw and got in line looking for a store. It was not that easy, several people were in lines ahead of us. We got to the front of the line and have invested a chunk of change and opened a store. No crime. No threat of a crime. No police activity, in fact I can't even get a parking ticket. A good stream of customers, and we find that the people that come to our store are very nice. Trash cans were installed today. Benches yesterday, trees last fall. Next door installed new signage. All in all, it is looking quite nice. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic. |

Wow, They argue, and call you names and even bother combing your posts in search of a typo.. AND THEY LAUGH BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE THEY MADE A MISTAKE. HOW COULD SA NOT WORK, IT'S THEIR LITTLE MISSION..IT'S THEIR LITTE WORK OF ART.. WELL IT'S A DAMN DISASTER...PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING POST MADE BY ANOTHER POSTER ON THE PAPA JOHN'S THREAD...YOU DOPEY DEMOCRATIC NIT WITS.. "I was at Papa Johns the other night because well I like their pizza they are all over the place where i am from. Anyway it was about 930 pm and i had called in an order to pick up on my way home from work i found a legal parking spot on Springfield Ave got out and started to walk toward the store. Standing in front of the store doing nothing giving me the impression they were just going to start trouble was a group (i would say of 10) of young males just standing there. They stared at me going in and out. I have lived in NYC for several years however that moment was the first time in a long time that I actually thought i would get robbed or worse. I will not be making the mistake of going there again. If Maplewood isnt careful they are going to end up with another B. Hathway's on their hands." GREAT JOB SA! |

I walked the entire length of Springfield Avenue on Monday. I saw places I never knew existed and places that I've been to before. I saw Shep at Sayle and Wimmer printers cutting down a job through their open door and smelled the ink. I saw a Coney Island hotdog stand where salesmen in shirtsleeves enjoyed lunch on the 60 degree day. I saw a temple that needed a bit of TLC I saw car sales people looking out their window hopefully at me at Wyman Ford. I saw Maplecrest Park, where the team I coached --the Orchard Park Thunderchickens -- delivered their death blow to that park's softball team in 1982 capturing their one and only town-wide victory ever. I saw a large DotCom wine shop I saw people waiting at bus stops I saw the post office filled with people I saw Verjus and was going to have lunch there, but it was Monday and they were closed. I saw Sherwin Williams paints I saw a Dodge dealership I saw public parking lot number 6 and used it I saw The Beaded Path and someone sitting making jewelry. I saw Net Nomads. I saw banks and people in lines in their cars at the ATMs. I saw a pizza place selling slices for $.99 I saw a Jamaican restaurant and noted it to check out next time I was there I saw a diner that's been there for decades I saw where the Farmers' Market will be soon I saw the 1978 Art Gallery with its sign directing people not to park in the large Hobby Shop's parking lot. I saw the Dunkin Donuts, where a young man tried to sell me drugs. Things look good and a few details remain to be ironed out, but overall there are many good things happening on Springfield Ave. Get the police more involved on the borders, drop in a police station and watch things happen. |

Thanks, Dave. I've lived close to SA on the East side of town for a very long time. I've seen the ups and downs of the Ave and can definitely say that the swing right now is UP. I know for a fact that the value of property on the Ave is skyrocketing and the number of inquiries by businesses to move there has increased tenfold. I can't waste any more time on Straw. Responding to him simply encourages him. He is ill informed and chooses to remain that way. He give conservatives a bad name. Yes, there are still many things to be done on SA. The work is FAR from done. A group of us on the SA Partnership Board are meeting next week with the Chief of Police to discuss how we can continue improving the safety of the Ave. We are also going to survey the entire length to look for ways to make the area cleaner. Dave, you missed myriad other wonderful spots along the way.....Ricciard Paints where you can get real advice, Conways Deli with the best Taylor ham and egg sandwich on a toasted hard roll, a wonderful wedding dress shop, an art gallery, an incredible hobby store, not one but two friendly banks, a park, a library, a genuine Italian specialty food store, a nice small neighboorhood dry cleaner with a sense of humor, an ice cream store that also sells good soup, an almost finished Portugese BBQ.......The list goes on and on and it grows every day. As for the poster regarding Papa John's: what exactly was it that made you uncomfortable about the group of young men outside? Did that actually threaten you? Or were they just not the right race for your comfort? |

I've been doing more things on the Avenue lately. I had a tire repaired at Maplewood Tire the other day, went to have my taxes done at Essex Tax Center (which I highly recommend, very friendly staff), stopped by the Beaded Path a great addition and though it's down a bit further, had a great cheesesteak at Jay's Grill! Can't wait for Burnet BBQ to open. Maplewood Arts Center is a very cool addition - make sure to get over there on March 19th for the Black Maria Film festival, a nice intimate space to see some independent short films, they had a great collection last time they were in town - very inspiring stuff. There is a lot of work to do, but it's really improving.

Disclamer: jgberkeley is a shared MOL screen name. Jennifer owns and runs the Bead store; The Beaded Path. I (George) just kind of hang around and help out when needed. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic. |
