tonight will be another thursday night in south orange. seton hall kids will be drunk all over town. residents on garderner, ward, riggs, village, and many other roads will awakre to find trash and beer bottles over their property and their garden decorations stolen or destoryed. Cryans/Gaslight/Bunnys/Grille will let the drunk shu students stumble back to campus sometime between 1-3 am. The SO Police will respond to 5-10 noise complaints (many from shu students 'partying'), there will be many parking complaints. While the police are tied up on the east side of town at SHU and surrounding addresses tonight elsewhere in town there may be an auto theft or a choking baby, or a heart attack or a burglary in progress and the police response (yes they are first responders with defibrillators ond oxygen and usually get there before the rescue squad) will be delayed because all 4 of the officers on the road will be tied up in a combination of dealing with SHU parties, noise complaints, parking complaints, and burglar alarms that go off because people do not know how to operate them. i dont really have any suggestions i mean the police can only do so much, and seton hall is seton hall i just think it is funny that the same thing happens almost every thursday night. |

I have been saying similar for the past three months. SHU students are spoiled arrogant and annoying...but on a happy note...I saw a cop grab one off the street in front of the apartments near Cottage Street a night ago across from my building...I guess he had a party cup and was underage... The cop slamed to a halt in the middle of South Orange Ave and had him cuffed and in the car in about thirty seconds...NICE JOB SOPD...KEEP IT UP. E Roberts is right...now that its getting warmer out crime will slowly start to migrate from the east and north of us and SOPD will have to direct their attention on real crime and less on the students. |

I think that SPRING BREAK will be just as bad if not worse...there are more off-campus housing this year then in past several years. I have noticed more off campus housing around town and even (GASP) west of the railroad tracks. |

Even when the SOPD officers are at other scenes they dont seem to do anything to stop crime. I'm sure most of us have heard about the fight outside of the grill about a week ago. Well there was a South Orange Police Officer there and all he did was stand by and watch a young man get beaten by 5 other men. He did not step in and try to break it up, he did not pull his gun, he didn't even yell at them to stop. The young man was severly beaten and kicked while he was laying on the ground, the beating did not stop until officers from another town showed up. I guess that officer was too busy thinking about Seton Hall students and their off campus housing. I am not attacking the SOPD, I actually am very impressed by some of them. I recently dealt with a Detective from the department who did just an absolutely wonderful job. But please, lets not blame Seton Hall students for any lack in the Department. It seems that for some of these officers breaking up parties and giving out tickets is the only thing they want to do anyway. |

what I "heard" about the fight at the south orange grill is what I read on the thread on the message board: a lot of rumor and misinformation. |

Perhaps everyone would feel better of SHU actually paid taxes to support the police department, and there could be enough police for both drunk kids and the choking baby. |

I still dont understand why the Village can't charge them a public safety fee for fire and police. |

Perhaps the Village is more involved in negotiating dugouts instead of something more important like a public safety fee or at least some arrangement so that SHU is a community asset and not a liability. What about severe university penalties for underage drinking? Maybe they already do this but from what I read here it would come as a surprise. |

Why don't arizona, e roberts, and m.scott, and waldo form the South Orange chapter of the Guardian Angels. Then the four of you can patrol the town on Thursday nights and rid the town of underage drinking and other lawless activities. |
