I think that the NYC metro area defies that rule. It attracts people from all over the country (and the world). Those who are from it stay, others come along later.A similar survey anywhere else might reveal that what you read is more accurate,Tom.

Tom, I'm not far from where I was born, (Red Bank), but I would not say that I have entirely "settled" here. -It's been a great town to raise my daughter but I think that after she finishes HS I will be a movin'. -I need land baby, -LAND! -and a view to go with it.

My father always swore that we were part gypsy and we moved about every 4 years while I was growing up. I continued the tradition (and then some) once I was on my own. So I find myself in South Orange, 786.14 miles from the Chicago suburb where I was born, but having taken the long way here... The long way in this case includes 3 continents and most major metro areas in the US.

Houston, Texas
1622 mi.
My dad was born and raised in New Brunswick, left during WWII when he joined the army. Eventually ended up in Houston.
Now I am here in NJ, quit by accident, for 29 years. How bazaar is that? My parents vow they will never come back here, except to visit. It is warm and lovely in Houston today. Can't say that I blame them!

Haddonfield, NJ -- a whopping 81.38 miles away (door-to-door). I don't feel like I live in the same state where I grew up though, because I grew up near Philly and now live near NYC.
